80's is my best thing in life..
i dont watch today movies anymore..i mean not intersted..nothing impressive..
yes there's some good movies..but 80's is Gold..and i mean the cheezy acting and effects
and great B-Movies(sci-fi,horror,teens comedy,new noir)..

i'll watch Brain Damage 1988..still ther's no good copy yet

The Dam Busters (1955)

Ok so Lucas did not just get inspiration from that film (for the attack on the Death Star), he ripped it off completely lol.
I'd say the original is better because more intense.

The movie is regarded as mostly historically accurate, but it doesn't mention the hundreds of POW workers that died in the flood, nor that it didn't hurt Germany's weapons production much in the end. Or I've missed that part, but old war movies rarely mention the failures and/or collateral casualties anyway.

I've found the weapon development part too long, not really boring but of course it doesn't compare to the raid.
Still a good story, to think they really did that crazy stuff with all that so-so equipment.

Oh and, the dog's name lol, crazy Brits.

Flight of the navigator.

The silvestri score makes this movie. Has quite a lot of emotion especially if you read into the 70's and 80's tones that people like me miss quite a bit.

Max was such an awesome character and Disney need to revisit this one.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

In a puzzling crime scene in contemporary Virginia or the like, there are a dead family on the ground floor, with boring obvious wounds, and a mysterious dead girl in the basement, apparently not wounded. The latter is sent to Tilden Morgue & Crematorium, a family business run by father and son in a country house, for an urgent autopsy which turns out very challenging.

A very good idea wasted with an overly traditional plot: events steer towards the familiar ground of victims trapped in a creepy place with something bad, sacrificing the original and imaginative aspect of exploration of the mysterious corpse and its implications for the sake of fairly useless action and physical menaces.
When Dr Tilden exposes his complex and bizarre theory about the corpse it is out of character, unreasonably sophisticated, not supported by sufficient evidence and not doubted or challenged; it's only a moment of respite and paying up the explanation debt before the mandatory bad ending.

Good photography and special effects; when we first see the morgue imagining what could go wrong with each location and prop is pleasant, but in some cases too easy.

Made the GF watch this. She liked it. On my nth time around, I've decided that the score doesn't quite work for me. At times, anyway.

Ghost in the Shell.

It's depressing when Americans outdo the Japanese playing the "this is who you were/dead or forgotten family member" card. Judging from the preview, there is nothing subtle about this production. Still undecided if I'll give it the theater experience.

EDIT: Michael Pitt as The Laughing Man. That's the most interesting bit.

Watched this recently too. You're right about the score, what an all-time classic. Love the fake-outs early on, frisbees and water towers - imagine watching this cold without seeing the trailer or poster.
Pioneering special effects that are actually PART of the story and some iconic design worthy of Probert and Mead (I wonder who actually worked on this?)

There's an essay online somewhere that tries to reconcile the time paradox - David is returned to 1978 but will inevitably grow up and encounter his displaced younger self in 1987.

As terrific as it's always been. Not a poor shot in the entire movie. Edited to be taut as can be, with a powerful score and note perfect cinematic handling.

For me it remains Fincher's very best.

Se7en was a real treat to watch on the big screen when it made it's theatrical debut with my not knowing how it was going to arrive at it's eventual conclusion -- the ending is one that is truly gut-wrenching at it's best (and can't be topped/one-upped). The special EFX for each victim was truly groundbreaking for it's time as well.

HANA-BI (Fireworks as the dvd cover said)
Wasn't sure what I was gonna get into with this as it didn't sound like much like any of Takeshi's other stuff. There's some quite violent stuff at times, but for the most part I was just blown away how everything just worked. The score was fantastic, the shots at times were just really pretty and almost made you forget about the depressing nature of the movie. Is this an asian cinema classic? I'd say so.

I fondly remember watching the DVD with my new 5.1 speakers and hearing the rain constantly pour down in the back speakers all through the movie.

Also, the way Mills pronounces "Marquis De Sade" is so funny.

Rather than in halves, I would divide the story into a brief beginning to present the corpse, the place and the characters (until the autopsy begins), the middle, and a brief finale in which many things happen quickly because suspense and uncertainty have ended.
The disappointing transition from two puzzled men doing an autopsy to two scared men trying to save their lives is gradual, suggested in advance and naturally expected, and I'm afraid the mysterious corpse is mostly a vague excuse for a payload of fairly traditional scary supernatural manifestations, rather than a true "character" expressing itself in unnatural ways.

I knew you put Fincher in the middle somewhere, at best, and I guess I assumed Se7en by default. I'll admit he's seemed to wane over the years, but I quite liked The Game & Alien 3 as well.

Fight Club is a terrific film, no doubt about it, and I hold it in high regard. But Seven is the more succinct overall package for me. It's Fight Club's nature to be longer with a more sprawling narrative - and sadly a twist that means it can never be viewed quite as it was the first time. For that reason its brilliantly made, but lacks the brevity of Seven by its own volition.

I'm similar with Lynch. I prefer Blue Velvet - my favourite of his surrealist works - to Lost Highway or Mulholland drive; not because they're bad films, but because Blue Velvet actually has a storyline composition in the sense of a beginning, middle and end. More rounded, if you will.

That's what the commentary tracks are for. Fight Club has at least two brilliant CTs, the director/cast as well as author/screenwriter ones at least. I've not (yet) listened to the other ones.
