Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
Lesbian scenes were wonderful, what's not to like?
I.understand the criticism of the movie being heavy on style, but I appreciated it because it was a real movie with actors, dialogue and performances and stuff. I didn't mind its fairly simplistic story since it was told well.

Yeah -- seriously. WTF people?!Skykid wrote:Lesbian scenes were wonderful, what's not to like?
Also agreed. Their Japanese that they learned for the film was pretty impressive as well. It's also worth noting Chan Wook-Park is the only director to survive S.Korea's very abrupt fall from movie grace. Their golden years were short-lived to say the least.

Re: Movies you've just watched
That's not true at all, there's been a lot of great Korean movies over the last 10+ years. The only problem is the period where their most famous directors spent time making mediocre movies in Hollywood (eg. Snowpiercer, Stoker, The Last Stand). Can't blame them for trying out a new environment, I guess (and getting paid).
Re: Movies you've just watched
I'm willing to entertain the possibility that there have been a lot of 'great' (great?) Korean movies over the last 10+ years if I'd seen any recommendations that actually turned out to be good. I know you thought A Tale of Two Sisters was a good movie; I thought it was absolute shit. So I'm wary.iconoclast wrote:That's not true at all, there's been a lot of great Korean movies over the last 10+ years. "Great" to me is 4/5 stars, or 8/10. I have a Tale of Two Sisters rated as 5/5 fyi.Skykid wrote:I'm willing to entertain the possibility that there have been a lot of 'great' (great?) I don't really know what I'd recommend to you specifically. Some of my favorites from the last 5 years or so are (The Handmaiden), The Wailing, Silenced, Sunny, Way Back Home, Hope. There's plenty of other stuff, though (New World, Thread of Lies, Han Gong-ju, The Thieves, etc).

Tell me your absolute best and I'll try to give it a go, exclude Two Sisters. My fear is if you think that's good, I'm not going to be too impressed - but I could be wrong.iconoclast wrote:"Great" to me is 4/5 stars, or 8/10. Honestly though, 2 sisters, why is that anything except nonsense? Incomprehensible series of jump scares with no proper narrative or direction with a heavily stylised aesthetic that's meant to distract from the fact that there's absolutely nothing of note underneath.
It was really, really terrible.

South Korea makes an outstanding movie a year now it seems like. Inside Men: The Original is really one of the few movies they have done in recent years that is a must watch. I wouldn't want to see the shorter version they originally released.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I wouldn't put anything I mentioned as a favorite above the others, it just depends what you're looking for. Though I guess if I had to recommend one, I'd go with Hope. I almost didn't watch it because the subject is so off-putting, but it's an excellent film.
A Tale of Two Sisters is really not incomprehensible, it just doesn't spell everything out for the viewer. Instead they leave plenty of clues in each scene for you to put everything together. I like mystery movies that do that, and I've never seen one that does a better job of it.

Re: Movies you've just watched
But it doesn't work that way. It's inept and poorly executed. Fight Club is a movie that does the exact same thing in a fashion that is absolutely perfect in a sense of balancing ambiguity with intrigue.iconoclast wrote:I wouldn't put anything I mentioned as a favorite above the others, it just depends what you're looking for. Sisters on the other hand is simply irritating. It doesn't achieve a basic requirement in filmmaking which is to engage the audience on proper terms. I'm not saying ambiguity and obsfucation aren't fine in film; Blue Velvet or other Lynch movies are achievements in artistic, dreamlike concepts executed in a way that draws the viewer in. But Sister's poses as a horror movie - which bit isn't - blurs the line between genres, and fails to actually work on its own terms.
Basically it comes across as stylised junk, which is precisely what it amounts to.

Re: Movies you've just watched
You have probably seen all these, Skykid but just in case;
as has already been mentioned
Memories of Murder (2003) - Joon-ho Bong. Beautiful OST by Tarō Iwashiro.
Bedevilled (2010) - Cheol-soo Jang. Tough going.
also
Mother (2009) - Joon-ho Bong. I am perhaps inclined to feel that this is a better film than his earlier Memories of Murder.
The Host (2006) - Joon-ho Bong. You must have seen this one.
Thirst (2009) - Chan-wook Park. Very entertaining.
Though not Korean, the Hong Kong film Geung si (2013) - Juno Mak, is very slick and worth a shot. Also, the Japanese film Cold Fish (2010) - Sion Sono, might be of interest.

My Korean is limited at best, but I thought The Man from Nowhere was worth the time I spent with it.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Saw John Wick Chapter 2 last night. I haven't seen the first one yet somehow, but I felt like this one didn't particularly require you to see the first one. It doesn't try to tell you exactly what happened, which is very appreciated and makes me want to see the first one.
Pretty much all action, story is just the right amount of light but present and coherent. I was very impressed, I'd like to see it again soon. Will need to watch the first one before then though.

I'm going out to see John Wick 2 right now, the first one was dope
Just came back... Worth it, but not as good as the first, which was self sufficient. This one ended relying too much on another sequel

I agree on just about every point, but I'm not sure I can climb aboard the "better plot" train with you. Slightly different? Yes. Necessarily better? Mmm, maybe not. In any case, the plots worked, though.kaicooper wrote:^^

Re: Movies you've just watched
Just watched the first one. The questions I had about the world were not answered by this, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. Very effective at setting up the John Wick character, and (like the sequel) has a fairly thin plot that provides what needs to be provided and lets the rest take over. Definitely a lot less action than the second, but more world building (as required of a new IP, of course...).
I think I'm quite in the "2 is better" camp, but I can appreciate it. I'm actually quite surprised how much more I preferred the sequel. Maybe watching in a theater helped?

Yeah I watched both at the theaters, I remember I liked the first slightly better but the second was as good as I wanted it to be. The first one left me shocked at how much I enjoyed, I went there without expectations, I even remember the day, it was a black friday in 2014trap15 wrote:Just watched the first one. The Great Wall.
My dad called me up to go see a movie with him, so off I went.
Nothing spectacular. The monsters' weakness was really, really, really dumb.
The plot can be captured in its entirety on a napkin, the effects were pretty solid.
not as awful as I'm painting it out to be [really, it's kind of enjoyable and there's some neat set-pieces here and there], but it's nothing that you really need to watch

^ Absolute truth.
All of China's real film makers were banned from the art and either faded away, joined the Cannes judging panel, or went Zhang Yimou. Nowadays with the film box office literally in supernova Chinese studios have realised how easy peddling crap to the masses is, and are working hard shooting for the lowest rung on the ladder.
Generally speaking the output consists of unfunny comedies, b-budget horror that looks like TV, and a shit ton of nostalga or romance movies to inspire a people who have neither; and they're tired, repetitive and not worth the ticket price for the most part.
There is the occasional one or two movies that aren't dogshit lifted from TV soap operas and awful fictional war movies where China finally win something, but you need to be lucky to catch them. They tend to get swallowed up in the mire.
And Hong Kong... Let's not even start. It's a cesspool.

Hong Kong really suffered once Godfrey Ho was forced to close up shop.
Though the fact that China is working so hard to catch up to the bottom-of-the-barrel quality of American filmmaking is fascinating in and of itself. Truly, uh, entertainment for the proletariat.
