Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
PC engine fan, I thought the same as most people did. After reading up on the case it seems McDonald's internal documentation showed their policy was to serve coffee at temps far exceeding safe for consumption after as many as 700 burn complaints. This was to ensure nobody would drink the coffee in time to ask for a refill.
The lady had some very serious burns, 8 days in hospital, and lost 20% of her body weight. She was seeking only compensation for her medical bills but the hefty damages levied against McDonald's were punitive due to their careless practices. Basically we don't care if people get burned as long as it saves us money. They had initially offered the lady a meager 800 bucks to cover her bills.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Yeah, we heard about that case when it happened even in our sleepy corner of the world. I remember a schoolteacher referencing it incredulously as an example of frivolous litigation. Can't hold it against teach too much, I guess, without the ol' information superhighway back then. But yeah, when it came up in A-Levels a few years later after the dust had settled, I was all wee-bey oh shit.gif
Always found it notable she'd originally only asked them to cover her skin grafts, etc after their corporate policy did near-instantaneous third degree burns to her. Imagine a spilled cup of coffee totalling your dick and balls in one shot, sounds like the setup to a Death Wish sequel.

I see the potential for a classic David v Goliath legal biopic here. Maybe get Meryl Streep to play the old lady with the deep fried perineum.
I'm sure being a massive advertiser gives a certain ability to control the narrative, especially in those days. And the narrative that there are all these idiots out there maiming themselves and looking for an easy pay day only serves the corporations when it comes to avoiding liability and saving face. Sure that happens, but the vast majority of frivolous or fraudulent cases will get filtered. If it was really that easy everyone would be doing jt.
Now in the US we just have a certain "news" station that is a total right wing mouthpiece. They don't even bother hiding it any more.

Amazing. You'd think that heating coffee to/ keeping it at that temperature would be more expensive than some people drinking more than one cup. Just imagine: there had to have been an asshole employed by McDonalds who did the calculations and came to the result: yes, we'd save a couple of pennies if we did it that way. So they did. What a bunch of cunts.Rastan78 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2024 10:11 pm After reading up on the case it seems McDonald's internal documentation showed their policy was to serve coffee at temps far exceeding safe for consumption after as many as 700 burn complaints. Btw, thanks for the new sig guys. I would have included Rastan's hilarious bit about Meryl Streep's deep fried perineum, but unfortunately there's a character limit in place.

I remember hearing also that they were heating the coffee hotter to get away with using crappier coffee to start with so people wouldn't notice.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2024 9:42 amAmazing. I think this is a British build thing but I could be wrong.
The Jarred door. When its almost closed, and keeps banging against the latch back and forth. I have one such door right behind me as I type. I will latch the door to stop the banging, then the wife comes through 2 mins later and doesn't shut it.. Bang, bang bang... I don't recall this happening in the States at all, but in the UK we all have that one door.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Watching tabletop RP groups on YouTube, and witnessing what I can only describe as 'competitive' dungeon mastering.
a.k.a. Filling a campaign with gank after overbalanced gank, early stat-drainers, disrupted long rests, hostiles that can smell low AC for purposes of bullying the weakest party member, and various other metagamey scum strats aimed squarely at achieving TPK.
After which, the DM presumably leaps atop the table and decares personal victory over the group, its characters, and the smouldering corpse of whatever story they were allegedly custodian of. Sheesh.
I'm no dissident of good peril, or deathtraps between consenting parties - some of the most entertaining modules I've read were penned by a Finnish sadist - but there's a distinct line between Dungeon Master and Two-Bit Villain. The latter is supposed to be diagetic!
Time to die.
The bittersweet silver lining is that we have the means to pass it on

TLBs on fire off the shoulder of Con-Human. Wave Cannons lancing through the dark near the Geirrod Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in Powerup W from Gun-Nac.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Sometimes I end up playing video games together with someone (in person, e.g. little cousin, or some kind of "friend") who is either into entirely different games (Minecraft, whatever) or likes similar stuff as I but plays them in a very different way (finds it fun to coin spam through games; plays on shitty setup with input lag but doesn't care; etc.).
I can't blame such people for being different, but every time something like that happens, I just get SO turned off because I try to find something we have in common or show them something I like and how I play it, but the other person is just too different and will always prefer their Kusoge/lame way of playing/crappy setup etc.
So every time that happens I feel like those people abuse and shit on something that's sacred to me because they are so different. It's just such a turn off every time and can even make you feel stupid, misunderstood, or just disappointed or angry.
Does anybody know what I mean? Why is it so hard to connect with others?
When I was a child, everybody liked the same kind of games because the kind of games I prefer were mainstream back then. But now gaming is not a sub culture anymore. Nearly everybody plays games in one way or another so everybody likes something else. It has become the same as music for instance - nearly everybody listens to some kind of music but everybody prefers something else.
Yesterday I met my little cousin. I had not seen him in a long time and I didn't hope he would like the same 40 year old games as I but still - the fact that he had a PS4 made me think maybe we could bond over that. So I asked him to show me what kind of games he plays and it was the usual stuff I hate. So I wanted to show him something different and he downloaded the demo of Doom 2016. He went through it carelessly without looking left or right or really trying to get into it. I know it's pointless and dumb to feel this way but it just triggered me because I just hate all the dumb shit that "those" kind of people prefer!!!!!!!!!!!!

Immortality is a tempting option!
Though the long-long-long term consequences are concerning...

Yeah, I feel that. When I first moved into my current place, it looked like I might be able to forge a friendship over gaming with my (noisy, somewhat boorish) neighbour.Arino wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2024 12:23 am I can't blame such people for being different, but every time something like that happens, I just get SO turned off because I try to find something we have in common or show them something I like and how I play it, but the other person is just too different and will always prefer their Kusoge/lame way of playing/crappy setup etc.
Then came the fateful words, I only play real videogames, like FIFA, and it was all over.
A shame, but whatever, people like what they like. I'm sure he was equally bummed that I find most sports to be dull as dishwater.
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
FIFA? Oof.
It's not just the sports. It's that "hardcore" sports sim games are generally terribad--and their communities are usually toxic rage addicts. I don't really need all of that in my ear on a Sunday.
I'm down for a game of Super Sidekicks, though. I prefer video games that are designed as video games--versus awful convoluted attempts at a simulation (that still comes up short).
We apologise for the inconvenience
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
If I understand it correctly, this is one of the driving forces for gamers gate ala 4chan; the feeling that "this is our space and it is being coopted by women and other groups." I don't know what to say other than maybe we can just appreciate the things we liked about the world in our past, but look for new opportunities to enjoy things going forward. It's not always the best to be constantly looking backwards when the moment has passedArino wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2024 12:23 am When I was a child, everybody liked the same kind of games because the kind of games I prefer were mainstream back then. As for music, yeah, that's a thing, but I'd say less so. It seems like more people have a broader taste in music to me than the other way around. In the 80s especially, you got these specific groups that were so strongly identified with their music that listening to anything else was a treasonous act; people would still do it, but they would often hide that from the rest of their group to avoid harassment. As time went by, and media and communication changed the way we consumed music, and cultural shifts changed the way we formed friend groups, people started to listen to a much wider range of music as a result

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Honestly, whenever the feeling of "gaming just isn't what it used to be" creeps up on me all I need to do is remind myself that 1) I already have more games than I'll ever get the chance to play, let alone complete, 2) Despite this, I still find myself discovering and buying new stuff pretty regularly, and 3) Though my tastes don't match up with the majority's, I somehow always manage to find communities like this one with like-minded folks to chat with.vol.2 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2024 3:16 pmI don't know what to say other than maybe we can just appreciate the things we liked about the world in our past, but look for new opportunities to enjoy things going forward. Mind you, there's plenty about the modern gaming landscape that can depress an old-timer if you dwell on it, but in a nutshell from where I'm sitting most everything that made me a gamer in the first place is still very much alive and well (heck, I'd even argue certain things have gotten better), it's just not as front-and-center as it once was. So yeah, you probably have to do a little extra digging to get to the good stuff than before, and heaven knows I've groused multiple times on here about the soul-destroying ritual of combing through Steam's "new releases" listings, but all told as far as I'm concerned if the changing state of gaming is enough to change how you treat other people then gaming was never actually the point for you.

This is a little thing that annoys the hell out of me. I could probably use a good 3-4 months away from work (in winter) to clear my backlog, which largely exists because "this is a good price reduction and who knows how long the game is going to be in print for". I'm getting so little played at the moment because the weather is nice and Euro 2024 is on - first world problems indeedBulletMagnet wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2024 4:37 pmI already have more games than I'll ever get the chance to play, let alone complete

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
That's relatable. I remember the joy I felt when booting up my PC in 2006 to check the new Steam Releases. When it got rough I just stopped all together and my interaction with the Steam store is now searching for something specific, or checking out the first few pages of what's on sale. GOG is a little better because you can set better filters on the new release page so it's not just a wall of hentai puzzle games.BulletMagnet wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2024 4:37 pmheaven knows I've groused multiple times on here about the soul-destroying ritual of combing through Steam's "new releases" listings

Sporting events are unnecessarily competitive by nature and playing it as a videogame instead of the sheer limitless and imaginative games that let you have experiences not available in real life is rather dull. For god's sake, you've had soccer players murdered for an accidental own goal, and NHL consists of guys on ice skates fist fighting while occasionally shooting a puck at a net. I loathe organized sports and sporting culture.
I wish I knew about and had more 2 player simultaneous coop games as a kid. I didn't own many, so any of the NES games I had growing up were of limited interest to play with friends because they were single player (or had 2 player modes that amounted to taking turns).
Thankfully there's tons of amazing options out there for multiplayer. Although it does annoy me when games with split-screen options have their split-screen removed. I suspect in some cases it's due to hardware limitations (EDF 2, 3, and 4.1 all had splitscreen local coop removed in the Nintendo Switch versions...) but in some cases it's clearly laziness (EDF IA for PC had splitscreen coop removed).

Give me Super Dodgeball or the like any day - Stephen Fry had the right idea.
In fact, Aardman's Early Man was an entertaining watch from that perspective; It's ostensibly about a bunch of cavemen getting turfed out of their idyllic valley by bronze age conquestors, inventing football in their badlands exile, and winning back their home by way of sporting contest. But between the funny stop-motion lines, there's an incisive this game used to be legit before you fat cats ruined it vibe that applies handily to most big sports.

Yeah, it all tends to be a bit low-brow. And compromised, in most cases, by the greater popularity machine - I find it much harder to care that X player plays for Y team if they might be shuffled halfway across the world next month by a Big Money acquisition, or partake in embarrassing midgame Tactical Litigation Action due to abusable overbalanced rules.BareKnuckleRoo wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2024 4:28 pm Sporting events are unnecessarily competitive by nature and playing it as a videogame instead of the sheer limitless and imaginative games that let you have experiences not available in real life is rather dull.
