Okay, I picked up my DVD today. I posted some detailed impressions of it on my blog. Follow the link through my sig.
Here's an interesting excerpt which confirms what I theorized about months ago in regards to rank in Original mode:
"There is an omake section where it shows the Stage 5 boss at a super high rank, which occurs when your counter is over 70K. The bullets go at least twice as fast! ISO gets through towards the end of the second phase without dying, but even he can't handle it at that point. Some of the fastest bullets I've ever seen, it even puts Psikyo stuff to shame. Apparently bombing or dying lowers the rank. In the actual run, ISO bombs a good deal on the last boss. At first I thought he was just being a pussy and was trying to clear it fast, but I see now it was in order to lower the brutal rank"
Also, I was quite wrong before, Normal Palm is not used in any of the modes! It's Abnormal Palm all the way in this DVD. I never thought Ab Palm could be so good with scoring, but there you go.

The only thing that bothers me in Futari is how the boss patterns suck compared to the regular enemies. Something isn't right there.

That link shows the guy bombing twice at the start of the boss fight. ISO does the same thing in his full run, in order to quickly lower the rank. As I mentioned in my blog, you need to no miss no bomb up until the boss fight with a counter over 70K to see the harshest rank (actually ISO has a 79K counter, but the DVD notes just say you need over 70K). It's much faster than anything in the video you posted. And yes, it puts Psikyo stuff to shame.Rob wrote:http://youtube.com/watch?v=wNnooPztl-QEOJ wrote:Some of the fastest bullets I've ever seen, it even puts Psikyo stuff to shame.

I just finished watching the Abnormal Palm Ultra mode replay:
-He dies at the start of Stage 5, slashing his multiplier from 120K to 80K-ish. If he no missed up to the boss, like SWY, his score would have been much higher. Since he finished the with 3.7mil, it looks like 4 Billion is possible with some more practice. I wouldn't be surprised if someone gets that some day.
Also, there is a great omake video which shows SWY showing you how to credit feed without getting the Max Power (MP) icon, as you don't want to pick up the MP during practice. He continues in Stage 3 a few times, showing you a pattern through the stage which avoids the MP icon as it bounces around the screen for awhile (eventually it fades away). At one point he has two MP icons bouncing around the screen.
The credits at the end are really beautiful. Also, this game had 3 programmers! Tsuneki Ikeda, Takashi Ichimura, and Yuji Inoue.
Finally, when you ALL Ultra mode, the "ALL" flashes brightly on the high score screen, separating it from Original and Maniac mode clears, which do not do this. Pretty nice.

I found the Ultra replays somewhat boring. As there's so much shit on the screen there is very little room left for creativity. I guess the coolest thing is the fact that they bomb very little until the boss.
Maniac mode invites thought and odd patterns. NAL even said he sacrificed some score for interesting patterns.

Massively overhauled in 1.5. The v1.0 patterns are way better (at least for the three bosses I've played). 1.5 is way too easy on levels 1-3, and only too easy on level 4.The only thing that bothers me in Futari is how the boss patterns suck compared to the regular enemies.

Well, I think you have to be pretty damn creative just to map out a way through the stages in Ultra with a no miss, as SWY did. Ultra is more like DDP DOJ. It's about blasting your way through extreme bullet hell and coming out alive at the end. It's not about dancing around on the screen showing off tricks. But I get your point that Maniac allows more room for style and improvisation, and that certainly can be appealing.GaijinPunch wrote:I found the Ultra replays somewhat boring. If NAL actually sacrificed points for some showy moves, that's pretty lame IMO. It's a superplay DVD. You should go for the best score possible. Leave the fancy, lower-scoring moves for the Omake section.

I'd rather watch a run of Pink Sweets that shows off stages at higher rank than 60 minutes worth of milking.
Also, a number of games prone to milking are awfully boring to watch as scoreplays.

They also didn't want both of the runs to be identical. If NAL actually sacrificed points for some showy moves, that's pretty lame IMO. It's a superplay DVD. You should go for the best score possible. Leave the fancy, lower-scoring moves for the Omake section.

I checked and they include the higher scoring Ab Palm vids in the Omake section. So at least they're in there, to show people the top scoring strats.GaijinPunch wrote:

But even then, they're not always the same as TAC's strats. You have to do some things differently with Palm.
It would have been cool to have one or two Ab Reco or Normal Palm vids in the Omake sections. Oh well.

Something else I noticed on the DVD:
When you get over 100,000 on the overall counter in Ultra mode, some weird things happen. First, at the end of the stage only one digit of the counter is displayed. Second, the counter near Reco/Palm which flashes for a moment and fades each time they absorb a gem starts displaying weird things for the first two digits. Here's a full list - the first two digits of the overall counter are replaced with the symbol after the equal sign:
100,000 = :
110,000 = :
120,000 = <
130,000 = :二
140,000 = >
150,000 = ?
160,000 = ©
170,000 = A
For example, 171,328 is displayed as A1328.

Well for those of you that missed out the first time around, Play-Asia is now taking pre-orders for the Futari DVD. It's listed as being released in October sometime.
