Ketsui isn't drammaticaly harder, but it's definitely a step up from Progear.Jonst wrote:This maybe kind of a stupid question...I know ketsui is brutal but how much harder is it to 1cc than say, progear?

Well,I should of said ketsui x mode, which does have cancelling, which is a bit easier than arcade mode but it's still brutal.Christ, even on easy it's still fairly tough!
Yeah, think I'll sink some more time into progear instead!

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Is Progear easier than Ketsui? News to me, I can barely put a dent into Progear.
That being said, don't shy away from Ketsui just because its hard. Because it is hard but its all a lot of learnable. The 2nd loops are very hard but first loop and X-mode are both very learnable without too outlandish effort I think. Try giving it some more time and I promise that you'll find it rewarding!

I've made stage 5 quite a few times on progear on a single credit;it feels do-able,whereas ketsui x mode, about once or twice! I love ketsui even though it dosn't love me!

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Why do some shmups have the option to "turn off shot" where you not be shooting at all? I think this is mostly on touch screen shmups.
Thanks

I don't actually know, but I'm guessing it's because you can get a joystick for an Android device or iPhone. If you're using a joystick, you probably wouldn't want to have shot always on.Sarethums wrote:Why do some shmups have the option to "turn off shot" where you not be shooting at all? Do you just mean the in-game shot on/off toggle button that some games have? In some games (strict chaining games are the most obvious example), the scoring system requires you to stop shooting once in a while.Sarethums wrote:Why do some shmups have the option to "turn off shot" where you not be shooting at all? Kind of a silly question, and mostly out of curiousity
Where do people rank Xevious on the memorization to reflex spectrum?

From what I've played of xevious I would say it has much less memorization than most other shmups. I haven't played it very far, perhaps the later levels. But from what I've seen and knowing that 80s arcade games tend to be more reflex based, I would say low memorization.

This was my impression as well, but I have also not made it that far. just a bit past the first "boss" (which I think is on the fourth stage, but I have trouble keeping track.)mastermx wrote:From what I've played of xevious I would say it has much less memorization than most other shmups. Xevious is such a brilliant game. It can get very addictive. It was released after the success of bosconian, which is regarded as a reflex based shooter. So I wouldn't be surprised if it placed more emphasis on reaction.
Here's another shmup question: so there you are, you got your 1cc on normal/1stloop. The game is still fun, but not as much as before. You know you could take that skill to the next level on said game, but there are just so many games out there, and other 1ccs to be had. Do you press continue, or move on to another game to 1cc?

Yeah, Xevious is definately one of the best if not the best from that era. I think Namco really know how to design a good shmup back then. Never played Bosconian, but Galaga is brilliant as is the lesser-known sequel Gaplus.

I... what? Xevious is awful. It's boring, has awful sound, and the ground shot mechanic is annoying at best.LordHypnos wrote:Yeah, Xevious is definately one of the best if not the best from that era. Galaga is ok, but Gaplus is definitely significantly better.

I guess we're alone in this, mastermx...
...the sound is pretty bad though. I find it much more enjoyable to play with the sound off and listening to something else.

We aren't alone. There are plenty of people that agree.
Xevious was the first vertical shmup that I know of. It defined a genre. It's time to pay homage to the God father of shmups.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Seriously? I love Xevious. I mean yeah, it was outdone by other games that drew and expanded on its ideas rather quickly, but it still stands the test of time pretty well in my opinion. One of the best of the era? Definitely not, but it's not awful either.trap15 wrote:I... what? Xevious is awful. Does the Japanese version of Akai Katana allow you to practice mid bosses and bosses? I haven't been able to do that with the US version.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I have a few questions related to cave (about 2nd loop and True Last Boss stuff).
1) So... I know all of the DoDonPachi games have a 2nd loop and a true last boss (Hachi/Hibachi/etc), but the wikipedia article about Dodonpachi II - bee storm, says nothing about it. Does it have a 2nd loop/TLB as well?
2) Progear and Ketsui Kizuna have 2nd loops too. Are they harder than the second loop of DoDonPachi?
3) I want to know if those 4 games have a second loop or TLB or both. And if they do, what are the requirements to unlock them:
ESP Ra.De
Dangun Feveron
Guwange
Espgaluda

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
@Synnae : Both ESP Ra.De and Dangun Feveron do not have second loops. ESP Ra. De. does not have a TLB but Dangun Feveron has one that requires you to no-miss the game. However, there is an oversight on behalf of the playtesters and programmers on this boss as the invincibility that triggers once you destroy a boss stays after you defeat the last boss. Basically, as long as you don't bomb, the TLB can't hurt you. And if you play Uo Poko, the bomb button switches your shot type so you are squarely forced to stay invincible.

I don't think they have second loops nor TLBs, but I'll let someone more knowledgeable confirm or contradict that. ^^
