Planes,Trains, and Automobiles (on Thanksgiving Evening of course).

I have zero emotional pull to the holiday (worked both days by choice) and had Indian food w/ the GF. She had never seen it, so I brought it over and we cranked it up. Fucking hilarious -- maybe more so than the 50 or so times I watched it in high school and college. Definitely has a lot of "if they only had mobile phones" feel to it, which I guess makes it special. Reminded me how much I miss John Candy.

Snowden

Good acting, good reconstructions of CIA and NSA bases with mild and acceptable Hollywood-style hacking, well made overall but a bit optimistic.

Blade II

Rewatched and now I figured how good the movie is. One of better Marvel movies to date (and the first one), has a lot of action, better effects and styles.

JFK (1991)
A bit long, but the final speech delivered by Costner was interesting. Did Oliver Stone got in trouble our something for making this? Nowadays everyone writes books about Kennedy's assassination, but what about back in the early 90's?

No. Although he should be in trouble for all the lame movies he's made lately.

Watched it when it was new myself; one of the films that, in hindsight, my parent(s) took me to way too soon for me to watch it comfortably.

My aunt finds herself pretty much uncapable of bearing pre-mobile phone movies because of this.

Flash Gordon (1980)
Been interested in seeing this after hearing about it in the Ted movies. Amazing sceneries and costumes, some crappy acting, very cool SF movie. Loved the music. And holy shit, Brian Blessed and Timothy Dalton!

You need to see Dragon Inn and A Touch of Zen to see what King Hu could really do. That was like a trial run for those movies.

Perfect Blue

This one came out right as I was ironically becoming disenchanted with anime as a medium, and preparing to move to Japan. As such, I totally missed it despite seeing it in a video store when I first moved there, and having it recommended to me. It was later recommended by a friend on the nerdy side, but definitely not an anime guy. Gave it a whirl. The music involved is pure 90's J-pop shit, even though I'm sure that was one of it's huge selling points. Other than that, it is spooky how much more amplified some of the points in the film have become. Produced pop stars... zero privacy... identity crisis... whorably designed webpages (Japan). And this was all when it cost some 3 yen per minute to log into the internet... long before you could spend your whole life on there and still survive. Enjoyed it.

Moana

It held my kids attention until the end which is saying something. Did not dig the tunes, and after living in Hawaii for two years the accents seemed really bad. It was, however, enjoyable. and had a few laughs in it.

Don't bother with the sequel to Come Drink With Me. I hardly features The Golden Swallow character and is all around a bad movie. Not being directed by King Hu really shows. As for my last movie watched that would be the classic Beverly Hills Cop. Still a funny movie all these many years later even if some of the humor hasn't stood the test of time. Decent ending shootout as well.

I really liked The Accountant. Probably because I'm quite sperg, not enough for a diagnosis, but it did take a shrink 3 yrs to reach his conclusion. I'd love a Barrett 50cal like Affleck's.

Xmen Apocalypse - Blu ray

Not my favourite Xmen movie, I liked First Class the most. Apocalypse plays out like an Avengers movie in that threats are overcome in numbers and diversity. But just like most Marvel movies, for me they have no tension and you never really feel like any of the main characters are in any real danger of losing. It does have some nice ideas though and the run time seems adequate and the characters back stories are thawed out a bit more. It also joins the loop on the original movie pretty well, just like prequels do.

6/10.

House of Wax (1953)
Meh, there are better Vincent Price movies...

Beast of 20000 Fathoms (1953)
Watched it for the Harryhausen animation, Godzilla did the rest much better the following year.

The Shallows - Blu ray

A nice candidate for HDR 4K blu ray if anyone has the tech. This movie is Jaws crossed with Castaway with a 2016 spin (go pro cams, iphones etc). The lead actress is stunningly beautiful, the movie starts slow but gets there in the end. The colours on this movie are amazing with the bright golden beaches, green and blue tinted shallow waters. Some dramatic surf capturing as well.

8/10.

Deep Red (Profondo Rosso, 1975) - another excellent one in Argento's filmography. I think I like it even more than Tenebrae.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - why did I wait so long to watch this ? Fucking awesome. I expected some flavour of quality vaudeville, I got a fantasy gem.

Shin Godzilla (2016)
Welp, it's the Evangelion live-action movie Anno could never make by himself. I liked it, even if it's a bit more serious and has less fantastic elements than previous movies. Nice music.
