Production values are probably the least important aspect of the film making process for me. The fact these movies consider themselves carried by the quality of their CG speaks volumes.

Personally, I would have been fine with Marvel skipping the Civil War plotline for the movies. The original comic version is a mess (though it has some good moments with Spider-Man and the Punisher).

I have a hard enough time sitting down and watching movies as is (I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for my wife picking most of the movies we watch I would hardly watch movies at all) so I happen to like mindless popcorn flicks over more thought-provoking stuff (you've probably figured that out from some of my reviews though.) Your mileage may vary, of course.

Which brings up a more general question (not criticizing, just curious): Exactly how do people here like to watch movies when they do? Do you like to sit in a dark room and pay close attention to everything, or do you just casually watch while doing other stuff in the background? I would tend to be more the latter but my wife complains if I have my phone out while watching a movie (at home of course, I would never have my phone out in the theater.) Then again, as a result of watching too much MST3K back when it was on I tend to riff on movies a fair bit while watching them (good or bad), and I think my wife and sister-in-law have picked up that habit from me. If my wife is controlling the remote she tends to rewind a fair bit and try to watch every part, where I prefer to let it run while I'm in the restroom and catch up later. If I find a film boring I'll probably look for spoilers just so I have a better idea how much more there is left.

Working through my backlog of "old movies I missed out on as a kid" I picked up Escape from New York, Red Heat, Police Story (the old one), The Fifth Element and the Mad Max Anthology.

I've managed to finish everything save for Mad Max, which I haven't started on yet.

The fifth Element was "interesting" and a fun little ride but I wanted to watch it mostly because I saw the first part at a friend's house when I was a kid and never got to see how it played out. At times it felt like Blade Runner on crack.

Red Heat was not the movie I thought it was going to be. Some reviewers on IMDB almost made the movie sound a lot better and funnier than I found it to be. The so called "comedy" aspect of it wasn't really there for me, save for a few scenes and I didn't really like any of the characters save for Arnold, nor did I find the "cop duo" dynamic to work well at all. I also found the the climax to be a bit of a yawn fest. I did have some nicely filmed shots however.

Police Story was a fun little thing that I can see myself revisiting soon. The fight scenes were fun, not my favorite Jackie Chan movie (but I understand it's one of his personal favorites) but I liked it. I plan to pick some more famous Jackie Chan movies later.

Escape from New York was interesting and I loved the music, especially the simple but catchy title theme. I didn't find it "as cool" as I had hoped but it was camp in all the right ways.

You might check out The Protector, another Jackie Chan movie. Probably not his best film by far, I've only seen the intro. I hope to check out the Project A movies and Wheels on Meals as well.

Planning to pick Wheels on Meals and the Project A movies soon-ish. Also planning to pick up the Drunken master and Armour of God. And maybe the Protector as well.

I'm also trying to find out the name of an older Jackie movie I rented when I was younger. It felt similar to Police Story in style, and I think he was either part of the Police or helping the Police. I remember Jackie's character and his buddies tried to hide themselves in the bed of the woman they all liked. Silly stuff like that. Right now I'm thinking it might've been part of the Lucky Star-film series but I'm not sure... :|

Jesus, you guys sound like the worst movie watchers ever!

Rewinding?!

I like to watch a movie either alone or with someone who's going to shut the fuck up for the duration and switch their phone off. I also appreciate good A/V quality, but if the movie is a piece of shit it becomes less important.

I've told several people in movie theatres over the years to turn their mouths off too. If you want to talk shit, go to a bar.

Paterson was great. The anti-climatic trailer did a good job of including some of the better scenes but excluding the punchlines and humor throughout the movie which was refreshing. It's was nice to see Adam Driver again (I admittedly haven't seen midnight special yet) since his role as Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens, and his performance of a blue collar bus driver did not disappoint.

It follows Paterson day-by-day for a week showing his mundane schedule which includes waking up next to his wife, walking to work, writing poetry in his bus before his shift starts, eavesdropping on his passengers' conversations throughout the day, walking his dog, and stopping at the local bar to have a beer. His wife on the other hand is a stay-at-home wife, but unlike Paterson her schedule varies every day with new art projects. At it's core, it's a love story about Paterson and his wife being content with their middle/lower class lives but the film is also just as much about the supporting cast who helps influence Pateron's writing. He's not trying to get famous or even publish his work, but he uses it as a form of self reflection and a way to spicen up his day. It seems like there's nothing else to the story, but there's a handful of surprises throughout.

Paterson (the film) was charming, funny, and was way better than I expected.

I might be wrong, but I also swear that Jim Jarmusch was standing by the exit for nearly the full hour & 55 minutes before he jetted out the door in the last few minutes. I was hoping for a surprise Q&A.

If you can, grab the Jackie Chan stuff from Hong Kong Rescue. Pretty good quality blu-ray releases. I'm of the very few who like Project A II better than the original though.

Star Trek IV

Still a great watch with a surprisingly light hand on the preachiness compared to similar fare today.

Is this still the top grossing Trek film of all time, or did one of the awful Abramsverse films outdo it?
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

All three did :/
https://www.google.com/#q=star+trek+movie+gross
http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/franchise/Star-Trek

Interestingly, the revenues have dropped off steadily from the first reboot, so much so the newest one grossed $100M less than the first. Considering STIV is from all the way back in '91 the difference in gross is exaggerated, of course.

Police Story (1985)
This was great, really funny and the action scenes are great. It seems there are many sequels, are they worth watching?

House of Usher (1960)
Kinda meh. The widescreen and scenery makes the movie gorgeous as hell, though. Vincent Price was amazing, as always.

Police Story II is good, and 3 aka Supercop is good too, but depending on where you are, you'll have to make do with the US release with original language, or import. But not much beats hearing Kung Fu Fighting sung by Tom Jones over the end credits of the US version of Supercop.

Jackie Chan was the one singing the credits song of the first, right? I know he's a singer, sounded like his voice.
I'll check out the second one, thanks.

As far as I know, he sings the theme for all the police story movies. But don't even check out Police Story 2013/lockdown. Its supposed to be a drama movie but they somehow managed to get Jackie to agree to doing some action scenes.

I thought he stopped doing action scenes in 2011 or so, due to old age and broken body.

He's quit doing large action movies. That's what he was saying when he was promoting Chinese Zodiac 2012. So some action stuff still plays into his movies, but I've not seen any he's done after Police Story 2013, so I don't really know how much action is in his movies these days, but I'd say probably a lot less.

I don't think there isn't a single Jackie Chan fight that is both awesome and amusing.
I think one of my friends has a Thunderbolt DVD, might try to watch that one later this week.

Thunderbolt has what may just be the most ridiculous (as in "regularly violating the laws of physics" ridiculous) auto racing scenes in the history of cinema in it. The plot is throwaway, but I don't think you're supposed to care about the plot anyway.

It is Jackie's favorite, and mine as well. Not as much action in it as he was doing in the 80s and 90s, but well directed. Thunderbolt is the movie he made to keep the Japanese fans happy while he should of been taking time off after Rumble in The Bronx, and while not the worst movie he's been a part of, it isn't the greatest. There's that one fight scene where you can clearly tell its not Jackie doing the fighting.

The Omen (1976)
I guess it must have been horrific when it came back. To be honest, i prefer Rosemary's Baby when it comes to Antichrist movies. The music, though, is great, especially the intro, with that awesome background.
Looks it has a crapton of sequels, showing Damian's rise to power.

The Shining (1980)
The twin girls are still scary as shit.
Jack Nicholson was amazingly demented, only surpassed in 1989 with the Joker's role.

"Jack Nicholson was amazingly demented, only surpassed in 1989 with the Joker's role."

Disagree. While I thought he was terrific in both roles, his role in "The Shining" was better than his turn as The Joker in "Batman". Both are great, but "The Shining" was his better performance.
