^Nice job Aleksei

Slight improvement here, but Fatty Glutton is kind of ruining the game for me. And I said it before but god damn does that laser suck...

Guh.. my eyes =/

I'm not sure this was the best choice for a tournament that is mostly taking place on mame.. I only have the one monitor after all.

If you have an HDTV hook it up to that and run it in zoom mode. I can imagine it's rough on a small monitor because the bullets are way too small even on the original cab.

So this game... It's actually my first time playing it outside of the arcade, where I had never gotten past Dual Shears. I really do love it, but it definitely has some quirks and flaws. The enemies spawning at different points depending on your positioning and general erratic behavior can be really frustrating at times. And the extremely underpowered ship with a 4 shot limit makes things brutally difficult.

Despite that though in a way it makes it feel like you are taking on death itself armed only with Proco's massive balls. Those huge weird bosses, the pumping music; for all this game makes me want to break things, it really is classic (if a bit flawed).

A few random notes: I noticed that sometimes a powerup does nothing even when you pick it up. Also There have been times where I picked up 2 powerups at the exact same time (from those splitting amoeba enemies) and it only counted as one, but if you wait a second between picking up each of them they count as two. And the white powerups... for the love of god tell me they aren't random. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to affect their payout, but 50k points is way way way too much to be giving out randomly.

I am a broken man

Fatty Glutton is the only thing between me and a 1cc, but I just can't ever beat the son of a bitch without dying at least once in the process, and when that happens you are fucked when you get to the next to last stage with no wave.
Aleksei, please throw some tips my way, I am in despair. I really really want this clear...

You have got to get as close as you can right away and as soon as the fish start coming out back out and tap dodge downward when its moving downward and up when its moving upward, 9/10 times you won't get hit. My shield gets clipped once or twice there but you'll recover if you go to K.

Thanks for sharing your strategy. I could only get past him with the initial missile. Seraph is right, that laser sucks.

I have avenged me leg lads! The mecha-whale is no more!

So fucking happy with this clear you have no idea. I couldn't get your tap dodging strategy to work Aleksei, but the point blanking at the start works wonders. Combined with straight up dodging and utter terror when the time-out cubes show up in what was seriously the longest fight ever I managed to clear with my powerups intact, got my Wave and Multi Missiles and cleared. I died in stage P by barely clipping a wall, my gold shield bounced me off of it into another wall and I died. I seriously thought I was fucked when there wasn't a single shield powerup and I had to fight the hammerhead naked, but somehow I kept my wits about me and made it though to recover in the final stage.

Congrats! You topped my score! I'm glad you got glutton into a grind, the close up is the most important part. Anyone can basically wing it after that.
P.S.
I don't know how to collect the white orb for maximum points either, does anyone know?

Wow I found this game quite tricky. I think it would be fantastic to play on the real cab but trying to play it on mame was making my eyes bleed. I felt like I was playing a postage stamp at some points. Well at least its got me playing the Darius series which seems cracking.

This was a good match up this week too. Ive been watching both you chaps throughout the competition and I've been pushing myself to match your score each week shmuppylove.
Alas; this week it was not to be.

Yeah it's unbelievably good on a cab, because the cab itself is huge and the entire thing rumbles when the bosses come out and during their fights. There also a headphone jack and sound balance knobs; fucking amazing along with that trippy 80's visual style and gameplay. The Darius 1 cab was my first ever experience with the series, so it holds a special place in my heart.

I kinda feel bad that you guys had to play on standard size monitors since I was playing it streched on a 37 inch HDTV. Even on that big ass screen it was still quite a bit smaller than the cab and it can be difficult to see the bullets. I doubt I could have ever cleared it playing on a normal monitor. BUt good on you for getting as far as you did. I also enjoyed this week quite a bit, and I'm glad we had a good matchup for it.
JWS wrote:Well played chaps.
You guys still win the Best Team Sig competition

Well played indeed.
