It's quite a fun game. I wouldn't even dream of having it in a top 10 list though.

I do like Super Aleste. It goes in my SNES nearly every time I've got it hooked up. It would probably make my top 100, but definitely not my top 10.

Imagine for a moment that the bullet hell genre just didn't click with you and all those games looked the same. ...In that scenario, what's left of the shmup genre?

Suddenly the average shmup is some bullshit from the 80s and RSG looks like absolute genius.

Actually I don't gravitate towards bullet hell and I still hate silvergun. There's a ton of amazing stuff from the 80s and 90s that isn't bullet hell, dafuq you smokin'?

Not what I meant at all!

I'm saying these "casual" shmups fan's probably just don't appreciate pure bullet hell games (like I don't). To them (and me) RSG and Ikaruga are completely peerless.Seriously. Eliminate all the samey-same circle dodging games like everything by Cave, Psiko & etc, and what's left? Traditional hories that are forever old, like Darius and Thundercross. Does anything even come close?

Pfah - Silvergun is a legitimate contender for the best shmup of all time, certainly no less worthy than Garegga which has won the title in our voting 4 times in a row.

Yeah I noticed you had it ranked highly in your list. What exactly are we missing with it? I'm confident you will give me a better answer than "Darius is crusty"

Great graphics
Great sound
Good weapon system
Some really great boss and stage design

It's up there with R-Type, another legitimate contender.

No.
Super Aleste? YES! I think it's the best Compile shooter. If I had to pick just one, it'd be that one. It's got really neat weapons, puts up a good challenge (as opposed to MUSHA IMO), has multiple "hard" modes, good music, it's got lots of variety, almost no slowdown with tons of stuff happening... yeah! :D

Super Aleste should be replaced with Batsugun, and Battle Garegga and Radiant Silvergun should trade places.

Other than that I think it's a pretty good list.

Nice list, but I think it doesn't credit older games enough. (70s era). For example, I would definitely have Asteroids somewhere in my top 10.

I think it is actually a good list.

Ok, Super Aleste feels a bit out of place. But thanks for showing some love for the genre and putting the work into the article. :)

Maybe you could consider to exchange the picture for Donpachi / Dodonpachi. Like mentioned before the screenshot is from neither of these two games. And deciding for one entry for the series (i.e. Donpachi or Dodonpachi) would also seem more consistent with the rest of your list.

Call me when you've united the fanbase enough to get enough votes for only one of them.

I agree with system11. But besides being a great game I think the console attributes in it is particularly suitable for home use. Here's my take:
Most casual gamers are used to console genres rather than arcades genres like shmups. Thus, they are used to pay once for the item and get unlimited access, and therefore they require lots of playing hours and a feeling of progression to be able to justify the purchase. A slow start will not stop them because the money spent is enough incentive to keep playing, and they are used to RPGs, Adventures and such in which you start with barely any equipment at all but build up as you progress.

Console versions of RSG offers the so-called story mode, in which weapon power accumulates between runs. This is very similar to console genres like RPGs: No matter how poorly you play the game, if you just keep on playing you will see your weapons slowly increase in strength. The story mode also make the game feel longer, even though you play the same stages, because every time you play the game you are at a higher weapon level than the previous run. Treasure even uses RPG terminology; story, level, and experience. The three data save spots, the animation dialogues between characters, and the epic orchestra soundtrack of Sakimoto all contribute to the RPG feel.

The fact that it has six weapons make it seem more complex than your avergae shooter. Knowing which weapon works where is a memorization technique that I think makes more sense to console gamers than memorizing bullet patterns.

The hype, the hidden game status, treasure trademark, the great cover art and spine card aura all contribute to making it a collectible item.
