It appears they may do an encore showing of Wings of Honneamise. I'll be buying a pair of tickets as soon as I can. If anyone else intends on going let me know. Really stoked about this!

4:00 is so early I thought maybe there was another showing. Do you thing it's possible to claim your seats this early? If so, it's probably a good idea

Sweet! I've seen Akira in the theaters before and it was even better than I expected it to be. I guessing the theater in Odaiba is swank.

I can also report that the showing of Wings of Honneamise was amazing. The sound and image quality was top notch. I was amazed that a film from 1987 looked so clean and sounded so rich. I wonder if the film was restored or it just got taken care of extremely well. The latter is probably most likely. I got a perfect seat in the theater too. At the end of the movie the audience clapped, the first time I've seen that in Japan, and of course everybody in the audience stayed until the end of the credits.

All in all it was a great experience and one that will stick with me. I had the Sakamoto Ryuichi soundtrack in my head all week afterwards.

I saw the earlier showing (19:00). Would have been better to have the latter tickets as you, and another friend and his wife was there. It was very enjoyable. I've seen Akira in the theater twice in the last three years, and both prints were cleaner than the Honneamise one, visually. Sound as well as jacked up. Not that Honneamise was bad, by a long shot. That was a 1997 print. The Akira ones are from 2003 if memory serves. So yeah, going again... totally worth it. I could see it in the theater 2-3 times a year easily.

Last Bakuon. Go and vote. There's only a handful of anime titles worth noting. If you've not seen the Akira Digital Reprint in this form, you're missing out, and you may not get another chance. There's a handful of western movies I wouldn't mind seeing. Scanners, for one. Control by Anton Corbjin would be interesting.

Blade Runner is mysteriously missing from this festival. It is the only thing that matches/comes close to matching Akira in terms of soundtrack.

If it makes you feel any better, Ghibli movies for the most part play for ages here. I saw Kazetachinu like 4 months after it was released. It had moved to smaller theaters, but still full price nonetheless. Kaguyahime is next, when I get off my ass.
