Looks like it could be a fun download game (can't believe I said that) but isn't high enough caliber for package. Or have I been out of the loop too long?

"The PS4 version of Strider runs about as smooth as Hiryu does (read: smooth)." Amazing.
Ducktales Remastered did get a $20 retail release in NA/EU, so I suppose there's a precedent for this sort of thing now.
EDIT: JP retail package is PS3-only, so probably not worth getting either way unless you absolutely need a box to display on your shelf.
It's getting a package release in Japan, isn't it? They've been doing that for a lot of their digital packages lately, and the physical version of the D&D Mystara collection was actually a different product to the digital Iron Galaxy release, for whatever reason.GaijinPunch wrote:Looks like it could be a fun download game (can't believe I said that) but isn't high enough caliber for package. I don't think this has been posted before, but a promising gameplay video from capcom unity. I think I can firmly say I'm excited about this game now, but really doubt it will be a new classic. Some aspects of the gameplay footage gave me strider II flashbacks, while a lot of the environments felt uninspiring.
This is starting to look like a first day purchase for me but definitely want to see more.

That doesn't look bad at all. Sure the Metroid-esque features will alienate some Strider-purists, but this looks to be a decent title in its own right. Would be very cool if it has a "classic mode" with a more limited lifebar or something else that would really encourage learning the game's tricks. Hopefully it's a game that lends itself well to speedrunning, feels like the kind of game that would look great when played with that in mind.

Yes, I think a meta-game would be really nice, especially since Strider isn't going to have the crazy variability of weapons/armor/accessories that made symphony of the night such a great game. Strider and Strider 2 had so much replayability because of the 1cc and high score goals. At least playing for time would be something to work toward. I don't see any sign of score, but that would be a nice element as well.Ghegs wrote:Hopefully it's a game that lends itself well to speedrunning, feels like the kind of game that would look great when played with that in mind.
They are saying the game has some challenge, which is great. If they can limit the number of lives, I see this having some real value and not being something I just play once and forget about.

Re: New Strider game...
I really like the graphics, programming is a no brainer, but seriously. Lets not revisit the past. The PCE game already remade, the original, with original enemies, and so forth. The Arcade already went up against the USSR, Strider needs to move foward, not backwards.
The 3d is alraady upsetting but it is better then playing the GameGear strider.
New Killer Instincts fail, because the characters do not reflect their original games.
1. I do not want helpful hints or instructions while playing a STRIDER game. Why should I be blinded, to read crap on the screen.
2. While zoom camera is nice, it should be kept to a limit.
3. STIDER is not Metal Gear. Without the animated graphics, is looks like a stripped down SHINOBI PS2.
4. STRIDER should not revisit the past, In Strider 2, it was a completly new adventure.
5. STRIDER main popularity was because at the time of release, it had the best graphics at the arcades.
6. STRIDER was branded as a game directed towards western audience. But turned out many people in the east really loved the game.
7. BLADE KITTEN, but with a METAL GEAR ATMOSPHERE, and more fancy zoom camera's. That is what I am seeing.
8. I want to see blood flying all over the place in Rockman Zero, not robots making 1960's Lucasarts Anti-Nazi propaganda jokes. I played the original Strider I am sure their was some sorta blood. I want to see blood, but then again, Strider is also made for children, but I want to see blood sprites, with bright "Kill Bill" red gushing out all over the place, like water fountain.
9. Again Blade Kitten
10. Lets take a lesson from Bionic-Commando Reloaded, and that other 2.5d game.
11. And at the very end of this, we fight JAFAR ( the Snake transformation from Alladdin Disney ), in his Snake mode, just like Alladin???

Re: New Strider game...
I got the PS4 version. Played it for about 2 hours so far. My feelings are mixed. Analog only controls, off screen enemy fire, occasional far too zoomed in camera, dialogue boxes that obscure the action, and kind of weak level design are all things I don't like about it. Oddly though, it still manages to be somewhat entertaining, and it's a pretty game. It reminds me of the NES Strider, which was also kind of a mess but I liked.

Yes, it's a stupid decision/omission. I've not gotten to the part where I'm guessing directional pad is mapped to some item switching or whatever but fuck, give us the choice to map that shit to anologue stick instead, please.
Re: New Strider game...
Is this game easy? I haven't played it, but nothing about this looks even remotely fun. Like they couldn't be bothered designing good combat so they give you constantly recharging health instead.

I haven't played it yet, but heard the health is not constantly recharging. On the other hand, I heard life refills are abundant, at least early on. Choice of analog only controls is disappointing.Moniker wrote:This is probably the most apt indictment of the 360/PS3 era.wariomona wrote: Like they couldn't be bothered designing good combat so they give you constantly recharging health instead.

I take it you can't play this with a keyboard all that effectively (I'm eying the Steam release).
I also wonder if the pre-order bonus of "soundtrack + concept art" is worth it (at least is doesn't cost more!).

Game is very easy on normal difficulty so far. Health doesn't recharge but health pick ups are abundant, to the point of absurdity.wariomona wrote:Is this game easy? People have been describing this game as a "Metroidvania" but it really isn't. It feels more like Mark of the Ninja, probably why mainstream gamers seem to be going apeshit over this.
Re: New Strider game...
Makes you wonder why the bullets are in there, you can just ignore them. Not sure I'll bother upgrading from the free demo.

I wouldn't bother. The more I play it, the more I dislike it. It's a good thing it was only 15 bux.system11 wrote:Makes you wonder why the bullets are in there, you can just ignore them. Not sure I'll bother upgrading from the free demo.
Re: New Strider game...
Played the demo. It's OK, just don't expect anything that comes close to Strider 2's level of perfection and challenge. This is a Strideroidvania dumbed down for current-gen gamers with the attention span of a gerbil. For what it is, it isn't bad though.
Re: New Strider game...
Has anyone played a decent way into it yet? I ask because the criticisms I'm hearing could easily apply to the first few shit - tactic hours of the 'classic' Symphony of the Night. From a quick play it certainly looks doesn't seem to be the Strider game I'd have wished for, but something decent enough in its own right.

Re: New Strider game...
Finished the demo and I dislike it less, if that helps. It certainly improves the game if you reduce the voices and effects volume by half so that the music can actually be heard.

Re: New Strider game...
Not sure how long I've been playing, but I just beat the birdman boss (on hard). It seems like all you do in this game is run forward and mash X. There's no reason to worry about taking damage since every enemy you kill gives you some health and there are health pods all over the place. None of the enemies (including bosses) are fun to fight and the maps aren't interesting to explore. It seems like the game has music, but the volume is so low that you have to pause the game to actually hear it (and it's ambient shit anyway). Combat feels very sloppy since you HAVE to use the analog stick for some insane reason (not that it really matters since it's completely mindless). At least the game looks decent.
All that being said, the game isn't awful - it's just incredibly boring. Stick with Strider, Osman, Strider 2, and Hard Corps Uprising, they're all much better games.

Double Helix clearly used the NES game as their main influence and then drew from the arcade games for secondary references.iconoclast wrote:Not sure how long I've been playing, but I just beat the birdman boss (on hard). It seems that the requirement for analogue movement is down to the fact that Hiryu can aim his cypher at any angle (particularly while jumping). While this isn't very useful for the default blade, aiming Gram at various angles is helpful (I run around charging most of the time).
It looks like they tried to lock down the progression in the game... it's going to be interesting to see what sorts of sequence breaks the game contains.
Re: New Strider game...
Having given it a bit more time, I can say for sure I think it's missing a difficulty level. Normal is way too easy, but hard in comparison really fucks you up. Enemies take multiple hits, fire more quickly and often, and you can loose an entire health bar in seconds. Something in between would have been my ideal, as it is I'm stuck between what feels almost like a cheat level, and one that I know I lack the time to plough through.

I watched about 10mins of a playthrough on youtube earlier and it seems pretty boring from what I saw. It's looks like the usual generic American remake of a classic Japanese made arcade game that has failed 67 times before. I'm gonna skip on this one I think.

So I heard about this being released and I was all like "eh, I'd be hyped but...modern capcom..."
Than I hear a few friends liked it, so I get my hopes up a bit.
Than I read this page. I'm sad now.

Re: New Strider game...
I think this is what needs to be kept in mind. I bought the full version of strider more out of brand loyalty than anything else. I'm enjoying it, but there are a lot of poor choices being made here (soundtrack, controls, etc.) My primary one, which I had before I even played the game is that if you are gonna throw a ton of bullets at the player, give the player a way to dodge/mitigate them from the very start. As things stand, the bullets are a weird mechanic that work almost like the sword in Shinobi that eats your life constantly. Since you can't dodge bullets, you must kill enemies quickly to get enough healing from them to balance the loss. Fortunately you get the reflect cypher, but why not out of the box so you don't to invoke this weird (and not particularly satisfying) mechanic?Kiken wrote:

Haven't really played that much yet coz life is too busy, but I'll admit I'm having fun with it. Wasn't expecting Strider 3; expectation were very low. Better than Moondiver!

Re: New Strider game...
Agreed, this stuck out as the weirdest, most sad choice. Really frustrating that the bullets fly too fast, and too often for your guy to cartwheel-jump his way through or reflect with your cypher (at least from the start). All the cool feeling you have of being a badass, quick, ninja guy are stripped because you just soak up bullet damage to have it replaced in the next room you enter.CMoon wrote:My primary one, which I had before I even played the game is that if you are gonna throw a ton of bullets at the player, give the player a way to dodge/mitigate them from the very start.
From playing the Xbox demo, I liked the dragon boss, and liked the stick-blade tougher guy once I got the hang of it. So... the regular guys you see all the time sucked, but the other two where okay. Also, sadly everything's so HIGH DEF I can't read or see a freakin' thing. Dead Rising syndrome. And who makes *all* the button prompts the same color? Throw me a bone! Gotta get me some glasses I guess.
Torn about getting it... I liked the visuals, so may get it some day to chill out to.
