Play Shmups Exclusively?

Post by CKR »

I'm interested in whether people play other genres or just exclusively play shmups. The poll is open for seven days. Thanks in advance for your input.

"Play 2hu Exclusively?" would have been better.
For fucks sake, who can be dumb enough to play shmups exclusively?

Me actually. I've played many of the classics from NES to PS2/GCN/Xbox era, and then lost interest in console games.

Some people play one game (i.e. Madden, Call of Duty, or Mushihimesama Futari), so why couldn't one focus their skills on one genre.

I'll only play other genres when friends come over, generally fighters and racers.
And Guitar Hero. hehehe

There's also the Ms. occasional urge to play Tetris.

I don't like videogames at all.

But shmups are somewhat awesome.

Hell no. So many other fun genres out there, you'd be missing out.

Mostly shmups, but I play other stuff too. A lot of Nintendo games and fighting games.

No way I could give up my RPGs, platformers, and other stuff I play and go exclusive to 1 genre.

Edit: I have at least pretty much given up on FPS since Halo is dead to me now.

Nope. While shmups are awesome games, they would be boring if it was the only thing you ever played I think. Variety is the spice of life and while much variety can be found in shmup games, mixing things up a bit with different games is the way to go.

I already feel a bit too obsessive over this genre, I feel I would turn into a robot if these games were the only things I played.

I was just shmups for about 2.5 years, up until about 6 months ago when I got a ps vita and playstation plus membership. Can't really remember why, perhaps because it was on an offer. All these new games though on playstation plus, they are so shit! Total waste of time, all these bullshit stories, and characters and other shit that doesn't matter - just let me play the game!!! Just playing shmups was much simpler and more straightforward. So I half want to get back to just shmups, maybe next time my plus membership expires.

I'm sure I've gone a year or so where I played nothing but Cave boards but ever since getting an iphone I try out most of the hit free games in the US and Japan store. Even if I play them once and delete I still have fun doing it.

A lot of the stuff on US plus really is shit. Don't take it to mean every modern game is crap though.

It depends on what you are looking for, obviously if you only want twitch gaming and no story The Walking Dead isn't for you, but that doesn't mean The Walking Dead isn't good at doing what it does.

Anyhow the real problem is that the market is absolutely saturated with crap games, so it takes a fair amount of research to find the stuff that is actually worth playing, but there certainly is amazing stuff out there depending on your tastes. Kinda reminds me of how 90% of Atari games were bullshit, yet there were always those 10% or so that were godly.

Back to the question at hand, no I do not and will never play shmups exclusively. I have a very wide range of interests when it comes to gaming. Fighting is my main genre followed closely by shmups, but I play other stuff from retro to modern regularly too.

I figured there would be more responses along the lines of:

a) My gaming time is limited, so I only have time for quick shmup gaming sessions.
or
b) The only thing I want to do is go "full shmup"

Thanks for the participation. It looks like Kevin Durant has a better chance of missing a free throw than finding an exclusive shmupper.

This is me exactly. As such, 100% shmups, and 90% of those are PCBs. I just don't have time for the bullshit that goes along with other genres. Coin up, no fucking intro or story, then just a 5-20 minute buzz depending on how I'm progressing. power down cab, then back to real life.

You're playing games on your phone? That's rad man.

I have obnouxiously much time on my hands and play for several hours each day. Regular games would quickly become boring, but shmups can keep the challenge up.

These days I am playing Little Big Planet Vita, BlazBlue CSE, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Might get a new shmup on 3DS VC bought Psiyko's Strikers 1945 on ps vita for 2.99 the other day. Oh yeah always playing r-type and played a bit of danmaku unlimited on ios recently. Need to buy that game.

Have most of the Cave shmups available on iOS the dotemu r-type seriously suffers from touch controls verts (especially danmaku unlimited 2) work really well on the iPad, horizontal shmups like r-type aren't suited for it, it's really hard to get your hand across the screen entirely the way you can with verts.

Yes, it's been a slow transition over the past few years but nowadays I pretty much play shmups exclusively.

I am 100% shmup currently. And 100% tate. Lost interest in most other genres. Oh yeah I love certain non-shmups for sure (Shenmue, Ninja Gaiden, Fatal Frame, Shadow of the Colossus, 24 hours Le Mans, to name but a few, but these days it's phut phut blat blat all the way.

I certainly play other games, though shmups must make up towards 70-80 per cent of my gaming time. If I wasn't having to play many contemporary non-shmups as part of my job, I fear that percentage would climb a little higher. They take up 90 per cent of my non-work gaming time, though there's a huge grey area between work and not when your job is your hobby.

All that said, perhaps I gravitate more towards shmups/retro/arcades because they are so rarely what I write about. I associate the likes of triple-A and indie with my job, so naturally warm to games that are nothing to do with work when it comes to chilling.

That said, I'm sure if games weren't part of my work, I'd almost exclusive play scoring/twicth/credit-based games, and most would be shmups.

I certainly like a variety of games, but with each year that passes (perhaps because I have less free time each year) I find less capacity for that variety.

And, alas, playing games is only a small part of my job!

EDIT: Reading through the thread, it seems the relationship between the passage of time and variety of gaming isn't exclusive to me by any stretch! Getting older = getting stuck in our ways!

I agree, as I've gotten older it's tough getting home from the office and putting in the time you need for certain genre's. A credit or two a day is just enough for me, although sometimes I'm so exhausted I can't even do that. At least there's portable gaming for when I travel, and I'll use that for longer games like RPG's nowadays.

As much as the genre seems to be my main gaming fix now, I certainly couldn't play shmups exclusively as I like too many other games as well!

mostly shmups but that's due to time restraints. I voted no though because I still love my point + click adventures, hack-n-slashes, and the occasional RPG.
