I haven't been following, but has there been any word on when exactly it will be available on Steam?
Don't think there's any word on any release day yet but it might could take a little while perhaps; seems like Treasure, is struggling to comprehend an all-English contract. (http://www.siliconera.com/2013/10/21/ik ... tract-won/)

Yep, it would be the best and fairest way to go about things.

This just popped up in my twitter feed, seemed relevant:

http://www.famitsu.com/news/201401/29047259.html

Appears to be an article covering the port progress. Looks like 16:9 and 4:3 modes will be supported; I don't see any mention of Tate yet, but I am assuming based on the past Ikaruga ports that it will hopefully be included. Someone who can read Japanese beyond the use of Googtrans could probably pick out some more info.

Yeah they hint at a 2d side scroller so hopefully we'll see something soon.
In other news good to know Ikaruga port is going well.

It's only a good thing for more niche Japanese developers to realize the potential of the PC market.

Hi people, I just registered here for the Ikaruga discussion. Really looking forward to the Steam release myself, and just wondered if anyone could provide any tips to help me get better at the game. I've started working hard to improve drastically as I'm playing with the idea of doing something ridiculous like a 1player, 2controller run of the game at Awesome Games Done Quick in 2015. So far I've managed to do a 1controller 1hand playthrough with 3 credits, so there's still a lot of room for improvement, mostly in eliminating stupid deaths due to movement errors.

As far as actual gameplay goes, I set a new personal best yesterday with a 10.9 million score, so I'm hopeful that I can keep getting better with the right guidance and knowledge of the right strats. I know that for just learning how it's meant to be done I can just watch the Appreciate DVD over and over, but I'd like something a little more practical if anyone could provide that.

Please don't try to play on a marathon stream unless you can 1 credit clear. Credit feeding is scrubby.

And please don't finish the game with crap scores like 20mill. A one credit clear is of course mandatory.

I'm going to play Ikaruga at other speedrun marathons and have plenty of experience with it already (PB is 30mill). Ikaruga is probably a good choice for a live marathon since it's way easier than most other shooters. At least for me it feels much more consistent in both scoring and survival.

The most practical tips one can give and which account for speedruns and shmups in general:

1. Watch superplays
2. Savestate practice
3. Play over and over again

Simple as that.

I'd go for some easier chains first and leave out more difficult ones. If you're confident enough you can implement the diffcult ones aswell. If you have any specific gameplay or strategy questions I'm all up for it.

Oh and forget about playing it with 2 ships. You won't succeed, that's japanese territory.

I wonder how many more times they're going to port Ikaruga instead of coming up with something new for a change.

Yes, but is it "horizontal mode" with flipped controls or true TATE?

Any word on whether they'll screw it up with DRM yet?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the only publisher retarded enough to enforce region-locking on PC these days is Konami. Which doesn't come as a surprise at all.

I think DRM is actually mandatory for a lot of games on Steam. I have no idea what Steam enforces, but I know like 90% of my games on Steam have drm.

All steam games have drm: they require that steam is running to play them. Hopefully that will be all Treasure includes in this release.

That's not true. There are some games that do not have any drm at all and can be played while Steam is not running (or even installed, I believe). Most of Nyu Media's games are like this (except for Ether Vapor and Fairy Bloom Freesia). They Bleed Pixels doesn't have drm either.

DRM'less games are rare on Steam but they are out there. No way of telling till you buy them though, unfortunately.

I think most people that hate DRM do so because they don't have access to the install files. As far as I can tell, no game on Steam let's you install them on their own. Honestly though, I don't think Valve will be going out of business any time soon. (It's certainly safer in that regard than buying from XBLA or PSN)

I dislike DRM because I don't like the idea that I might lose access to my games if I end up taking my laptop to a desert island (with my own personal hydraulic electricity plant) or spending the rest of my time waiting out the radioactive zombies in an underground bomb shelter.

That being said, it's not a big deal, and if Steam sales means I can afford 20+ games that I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise, well that's fine.

You know you can use Steam in offline mode, right?

And the game page says it will use Steam cloud, so i'm pretty sure Steam must be running to play Ikaruga

I really hope that Ikaruga takes full use of steam DRM. I really don't bother with PC-games that don't run on steam these days.
(Except some quick 10-minute indie stuff)

Anyways, 18 february is quite close, so that was a pleasant surprise
