You can play this version of RF2 on MAME. Just take the graphics ROMs from 2000 and add them to rf_us.zip and fire the game up. The graphics ROMs are the same and it works like a charm, original difficulty intact. More important is the difficulty which is MUCH more enjoyable in the original.
Since the US (Single Board) version unlocks all ships at start, the remaining two hidden fighters (Fairy and Dark Sword) are unlocked too.
Fairy:
Hold Fire + Bomb, then press Start at the title screen. Highlight the "?" selection, then hold Down/Right and press Fire.
Dark Sword:
Hold Fire, then press Start at the title screen. Highlight the "?" selection, then hold Fire.
Slave:
Hold Bomb, then press Start at the title screen. Highlight and select any fighter.
Each ship will have its own high-score table. I will make a new table for any ship that comes up.
