Awesome! Glad to hear that a US member has theirs already, a good sign that I may soon have mine as well. Really hoping to get it by the end of the week!

My order arrived Jan 21st, exactly 3 weeks after paying for it. I didn't order through the store so no order number to share...
If anyone cares to watch me rant and rave about the box showing up and what was inside - link.

For expansion audio testing I had to use famitracker to edit out all sound except exp audio in order to really test it since I don't have good enough ears trying it any other way.
I'd be happy to share that nsf file if anyone wants it, but I don't know where to put it, maybe I can email it to someone who would upload it and share the link to it on an online file sharing site. I don't have any accounts for such sites...

@game-tech.us
sorry about the loss of one rgbboard, that's not good at all... hopefully you guys can solve that.
maybe you could get a dropbox or gmail account? gmail has something called google drive which allows you to share files without keeping the files stored on your computer.
dropbox requires you to have the files on your computer tho. I personally prefer dropbox cause it's soooo easy, just put a file in a certain folder on your hdd and right click and you get the link which you can share that file with. I think google drive can be installed on your computer aswell if you like the functions of dropbox, but I'm not sure it functions the exact same.

Seems #234 was shipped today aswell :)

I do use gmail so I installed drive and here is the linkto the nsf file, hope it works.
The nsf is someones version of still alive, the end song in portal I think, it was a vrc6 recording and all that's left is the vrc6 audio, IIRC!

Thanks man!. What program do we need on our flash cart to play this file?

So if we dont have the mod for expanded audio and play the above file we should hear no audio at all correct?

Are all pins on the PPU used? I have just got a beat up NES (front loader) of eBay and upon taking it apart have noticed that (i think) pin 9 socket on the mainboard appears to be corroded, i think the trace around the socket is a loss cause, is there a way to fix this it all pins on the PPU are used??

to fix the trace just make a small jumper wire to go from pin 9 to a good spot on the trace, then solder in place.

but i would check it for continuity first though it may not be broken.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Everdrive N8 currently has the ability to play NSF music files. Besides Lagrange Point (don't count on that ever being playable on Everdrive or Powerpak :P ) I don't know of any games that exclusively use expansion audio. However, Erika to Satoru no Yume Bouken should work as a good test. The title screen and intro use expansion audio channels for the main part of the melody, so it should be REALLY obvious if something is missing.

Here's a video of its title & intro music

On your other question about pin 9, are you talking about the PPU or the expansion connector? I'm just wondering if there was some confusion between the two because you've only mentioned audio problems, which would deal with pin 9 on the expansion connector. Anyway, pin 9 on the expansion connector should be connected to pin 54 on the 72 pin cartridge connector. If that trace is broken, you might just want to get the expansion audio directly from pin 54 instead of repairing the trace to pin 9. If you really are having problems with pin 9 on the PPU, that should be connected to pin 66 on the cartridge slot if you cannot repair the trace.

I do use the powerpak and loopy does have a download for the player, go to the third from last post on this nesdev thread, but don't the latest powerpaks already have this? I don't remember if I had to add it, been too long...
I did upgrade the mappers from loopy and thefox so maybe it was in those.
...
Just looked, the manual for the powerpak says if you have mappers version 1.2 or higher nsf playing is supported.

I didn't know the n8 wouldn't do nsfs, too bad as I need one to test the exp audio with a gyromite converter with exp mod. Might even be willing to trade my n8 for the fami everdrive...

Yeah no sound at all if it isn't modded correctly, but also turn the volume all up in case the resistor values are just too high.

Yes I did, but for various reasons it always takes 8 or more hours for him to reply, work and time zones being top issues I would think.

He did offer to replace the missing board and look in to the shipping difference, but the damage has already been done. How do you make up for lackluster packaging and 3 week delivery?

Yes, if you bought a powerpak recently w/ CF card, it should already have the NSF player installed.

Also, here's a useful post to the NSF archive: http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?t=7814

By offering to replace the missing board and look into the shipping difference. What else would you want? 3 week delivery from Australia to USA is totally acceptable.
Try getting things shipped to to Canada from the US...we're on the same continent yet things still take 2-3 weeks to get here! <shakes fist>

I am pretty sure I said this before but here it goes again. Tim has a job, this is a side thing for him. Tim clearly states on page 33 that this is a hobby business and it is not his primary occupation. He has 3 days a week to dedicate to this alone. When you have hundreds of orders you need to pack into boxes, fill out custom's forms for, drive to the post office, and deal with customers all at the same time it tends to take awhile. I don't know how much you ship out of the US but filling out those extra forms alone take a good deal of time to fill out when done by hand, especially when there are multiple things to ship.

You are not ordering from a New Egg or Tiger Electronics here, he is a dude doing this by himself (maybe one other person?) and that takes some time. Most people that order from Tim understand this, if people don't like that they can go back to the RGB PPU mods and not deal with him. As for communication he lives in Australia, the time difference is huge. Not only that but he is most likely dealing with the other numerous customers that I am sure are e-mailing him all at the same time, you are not his only customer. Yes you paid a lot but when its a small time operation like his you need to have some understanding and patience. You need to take a look at the big picture and see everything he has to deal with at once. He got swamped with a bunch of orders all at once so of course its going to take awhile when you only have such a limited time frame to work on getting them out. When hes not swamped he gets stuff out fast, the problem is here the sheer number of orders.

As for the packaging I saw the video. They are tiny PCB's, as long as they are not rattling around the box and are in static bags to protect them there should be nothing wrong with the newspaper. The package just has to keep it still in the box, expecting a box full of bubble wrap when there are so many orders to get out is a bit unrealistic here. Hes not shipping a game consoles, they are tiny PCB's that just need to be padded enough to protect against shocks and movements. Now if they were rattling around in there I can understand some frustration but if they were well padded, protected against static, and not moving much I don't see what the big deal is.

You really should have waited for Tim's final decision on this matter before you posted a long video blasting him over it. I know you are unhappy but its not very professional to do this to your fellow modders unless they refuse to right the wrongs. We are all part of the same modding communities, just have a little patience before going off on the dude. I am sure Tim is willing to work with you (he has been with others that had problems) and will make it right, just give him some time and let his hellacious work load settle down.
I am no longer taking free or paid modding projects, please do not contact me asking for my services. Thanks :).

The order was paid for on Dec 31st, but didn't get notice of shipment till Jan 13th or 14th, EMS took about 7 days, it was not in transit for more than a week.

I've had packages take forever to get to canadian customers, but it's wasn't on my end, usually customs slows it down, nothing could be done about that though.

This may have been covered already but i just got my second nesrgb in today and theres something im not clear on. Where does the wire for expansion sound go on a top load nes?

I already have a frontloader with it hooked up to pin 9 of the expansion port.

which solder pad 1, 2, 0r 3 is for the playchoice palette? Id like to wire it without the switch in the toploader.

one last thing - svideo is too bright on my frontloader. would 75 ohms on chroma and luma be about right to fix it?

i think that covers everything i have questions on.

I would think that is reasonable. Its mid-day on Thursday in Australia right now! :)
game-tech.us wrote: He did offer to replace the missing board and look in to the shipping difference
So that issue was solved.
game-tech.us wrote: but the damage has already been done.
Really? I understand you were expecting these sooner, but its not like they were 3 months late. 3 weeks is not an absurd waiting period for an out of country purchase. I've ordered SCART cables from the UK that have taken longer to arrive.
game-tech.us wrote: How do you make up for lackluster packaging
Was anything damaged? In my opinion, that wasn't bad packaging any means.

I think everyone should consider that Tim could say: "the heck with this, its too much of a hassle, I'm out" and no longer produce the boards. He is doing a service to the community and these boards are relatively inexpensive. Could anyone imagine this product existing this time last year?

Also, you are charging people aproximately $100 to install this mod and you have about $3500 worth of NESRGB boards give or take. You'll be doubling that money in the coming months. That's not chump change and its thanks to Tim making these boards available.

Nesdev thread about top loader exp audio, we're still trying to figure out how to implement it in with the nesrgb amp, so far it's too much interference.

I think pc10 palette is called garish, pad 3 I think, but check the schema on Tims site to be sure.

Not sure about svid, but adding the resistor shouldn't hurt to try.

He took 2 weeks to ship out an order of 4000 US dollars and when it arrived it's poorly packed and some items missing and some items too many.

Not ok.

Besides, for 40 bucks you get like 30 cubic feet of manufactured packing chips, so why use crumbled news paper?
Doesn't give an overall good impression.

Slow shipping times is one thing I can accept as it's only the shipping option that's been cheaped out or whatever, but this is different.

I get that it seems i'm shitty, but i'm not, I am happy to have this product available. I just can't get over that there was over $4k worth of stuff in the box and it could have been done much much better with little to no extra effort. I've done tons of shipping and receiving of ebay stuff over the last 12 years so i've seen it all and know the difference between acceptable and good packing and this just disappointed me. If I were to ship out a $4K item it would be better packaged no matter how busy I was.
The video wasn't even meant to be negative I just wanted to show my 30+ nesrgb customers that the boards were finally here, but I couldn't help criticize and that's all i really did, I didn't not try to hate or blast Tim, just criticize.

There's no excuse for bad packaging, items are not supposed to be packed edge to edge to the box.

We know he has a full time job, but there are good ways of handling it and bad, he handled it poorly with no explanation and that last part, is the root to all of this. He should try to be more transparent with his paying customers.

I don't want to rant because it's a nice product, but I've decided that those two are two completely different things and one doesn't justify the other.

Powerpak & NES Everdrive output their expansion audio on pin 54. This works great for the front loader, but unfortunately, the top loader has no pin 54. You'll have to perform a small modification on the NES Everdrive or Powerpak by connecting pin 54 to pin 51. For Famicom carts, a Famicom to NES adapter would also need to be modified to output expansion audio on pin 51. On the NES end, I presume that you will simply need to connect a wire with a 22k resistor (or whatever value gives you well balanced sound) from pin 51 of the cart slot to the point between the two resistors on the NESRGB.

My order was placed on Jan 2nd, and it didn't ship till Jan 20th, and probably won't arrive here for another couple weeks. You don't see me complaining, because well, I understand that this is a side-venture for Tim, not his full-time gig. If he was a full-fledged company, then I'd be in the same mind state as you, but it is what it is.

I'm not sure how many units you bought from Tim, <I haven't watched your videos since the XRGB-mini debacle> so I'm assuming it's a lot since you are some sort of mod-service...so no wonder you're anxious! You got customers breathing down your neck or something?

But with 3 days a week to sort and package orders, I can only see how Tim is swamped.
IMO he should be cut more slack. Especially since he's trying to make up for the issues you've had. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you expect? A handy?

I'm sorry but you're coming off as pretty self-entitled about some pcbs. Yeah, it sucks that the count is wrong on them but I'm sure Tim will be happy to fix them. He made it well known that he was working on a new run of boards but was taking time.

I'm not sure how much you've shipped to Australia or dealt with people shipping from Australia but shit isn't cheap. Also complaining about the silkscreening or lack of it on the adapter pcbs? Really? It took 3 minutes of basic thought to figure out how it was to be applied in my case. A simple email to tim should've sufficed, it was way over the line to blast him on youtube.

Also i'm not sure if it's more you complaining about it or slyly stating you have 40 boards so people will use your services that rubs me most.

I've had items packaged far worse from highly respective dealers in Japan and China including things such as a Famicom Titler and had no damaged products. Was anything damaged in your case? No? Congrats, it's a box full of PCBs what did you expect.

Also in regards to the post above, I went into your videos and watched the xrgb-mini complaint. That was totally your fault for not understanding the system and blindly working with it. It's well known that feeding a direct composite signal for sync always has mixed results as seen with both Sega Genesis or modded PC-Engines because the noise causes the system unable to sync. The only methods to fix this are either a LM1881 cleaning circuit or to switch to CSYNC. My modded AV Famicom has had 0 issues with my xrgb-mini and I've used OEM JP21 which uses c sync as well as a retrocable ntsc scart which uses composite sync through a LM1881. Both work without any issue.

Viletim himself actually touched on capacitors in regards to RGB amplification elsewhere if you want to know the math and reasoning behind the circuitry http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=1733.0 and while it likely isn't making much difference it also can play a role in non-functioning xrgb-mini. If you look at the datasheet of the encoder it wants 220uF caps so you can potentially be affecting the encoder by using the wrong total capacitance on the output.

He paid 4000 bucks for this, what did he get?

- 2 weeks of nothing, no information, no nothing.
- Wrong amount of items.
- Poorly packed.

Would you really accept that? Would you not be disappointed and prone to complaining?

A handy?
I know I'm a bit hyper on this atm, it just gets to me a bit.

The problem is that Tim should've kept everyone up to date, a simple forum post saying "I got so many orders and don't have much time, but this is my plan.... blahblahblah"

Had he done that, I'm sure none of this would be an issue, except of course the packing error, but that's just the cherry on the top.

Edit**

Everyone knows this is a side thing for Tim, just because you don't feel like complaining doesn't give you a right to decide that others Can't.
Everyone has a right to their opinion, just like you have a right to yours' and to not complain, except you decide to complain about people complaining, and I complain about you complaining about people complaining, making us both hypocrites.

..but it is our right to be hypocrites!

- When the first run came out it took well over a week before Tim announced shipping or anything, no information or anything. There's nothing new other than people being impatient and dramatic.
- Yes, that sucks. In the same breath Tim switched to a different system so likely placing such a large order with specific requirements on adapters likely complicated things.
- It's a pcb, not some super rare precious item that can be damaged in shipping. Compared to some other stuff I've ordered from distributors that is fantastic packaging. So long as boards that actually have ICs are in some sort of shielded bag there's nothing wrong with this. Want to see how I received an order from China when I bought $400 worth of ICs for a joke gift?

No anti-static bag, no packaging in the box, just a bunch of chips plugged into foam. The only "nice" packaging I've ever seen when ordering boards/ICs are either a) hobbyists that don't understand the resilience of a pcb or b) when you order chips directly from a manufacturer which come tubed. Hell when I used to deal with modchips 10 years ago China would just throw a batch into an envelope with no packaging or shielding and ship it out. These boards aren't precious China.
