What's with all the pervy games on the PC Engine?

Post by evil_ash_xero »

After seeing a batch of games over the years, on game sites, I've come to conclusion that the PC Engine certainly seemed to have more lax censorship than Nintendo or Sega systems. I was even reminded of this a bit when playing Valis IV, and a naked harpee showed up to do battle. Then you got the gay jokes in the PC Genjin games that they had to take out for Bonk. Also, in Winds Of Thunder, there's the big tittied girl who works the shop.

I mean, look at this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LQx5NWgHrk NSFW

Obviously, this stuff is familiar to me, since I was discovering anime at the time. But I never saw anything like this on the NES, Genesis, or SNES(or the Neo Geo for that matter).

Can anyone explain this to me? Did the games have warnings for minors or stuff like that? Did NEC just not care? lol
PC Engine always seemed the most Japanese of the systems of the time, but it's interesting to see the dirty anime being in the games as well. Ahead of their time, indeed!

I have no problems with it..it's just a little surprising. Perhaps there WERE dirty games for the MD and SNES, but we never saw them. I know there was that hentail shmup for MD. But it just seems like there were a lot more on PC Engine.

Well, I'd imagine because stuff like Famicom (Family computer) and Genesis were much more family oriented and for the general public. PC-Engine was much more "PC" oriented, with tons of visual novels and the like due to the CD format, which is very similar to older Japanese PC game libraries. This is all conjecture on my part, but that's what I'd imagine.

CD is cheap, little outlay to get a game out there.

But the Mega CD didn't receive nearly the same volume of otaku-oriented ecchi content. NEC's content guidelines in Japan were more lax than Sega's or Nintendo's, excluding the brief period where Sega allowed "18-X"-rated softcore H-games on the Japanese Saturn. Divine Sealing on Megadrive was an unlicensed release. The demographics of PCE-CD owners were also more strongly in line with consumers of this sort of content.

Hardly. The FM-1, PC-88 and Sharp X1 saw their fair share of eroge before the Famicom. Years before Enix hit the big ticket with Dragon Quest, two of their first games (in 1983) were pedophilia torture sims.

^ What estebang said, the PCE consumer market seems to have followed from the PC-88 gaming scene where eroge VN's were absolutely rife.

Edit: There was a Gunbuster stripping game? Poor Noriko, how degrading.

Sometimes it seems that the PC-98's gaming library is 60% eroge, 30% real games with porn thrown in, and 10% games that are content with just being games. As a personal computer maker prior to making the PCE, NEC probably had a more relaxed mindset about user games than Nintendo and Sega, who (I think?) had only played exclusively in the closed platform market.

The PCE Super CD-Rom2 shmup title of Steam Hearts comes to mind & is from TGL (Tokyo Game Lab) software developer. The odd thing is, it doesn't have any nude scenes but is implied in the various cutscenes portrayed between stages. It usually goes for about $100.00 USD give or take these days (assuming you can find an original copy for sale, of course). Unfortunately, it's one of the more uncommon PCE shmups to get ahold of.

Are you sure? I'm not denying your omniscience, PCEX, but I could have swore when I played it a couple years ago there were some tittays during the interrogation after you defeat the bosses.

Am I missing something here? From what I saw in videos, she looks the same in Lords of Thunder and actually has more cleavage in the Sega-CD version. PCE definitely has much more in the way of mature content, though.

You're probably remembering the PC-98 version, which had all the nudity between the stages.

I've only played the PC-Engine version, though. I don't remember anything graphic, I just could have sworn I saw some nipples...

I looked up a Ramna 1/2 game for PCE and I was surprised that it began with you controlling a topless female Ranma fighting Hipposai (though casual nudity occurs in both the manga and anime).

Out of curiousity, how censored is the Dragon Knight game that came out for Turbo CD in the US? I know that series is infamous in Japan.

edit: nm. It looks like it didn't come to the US, though I though I remembered seeing it in an ad in some magazine. I probably got it mixed up with Dragon Slayer, a completely unrelated game.

Oh, no idea then. :? I only played the PC-98 version myself, but from what I've read, the later versions of the game were more censored. Maybe they let something slip by in the PC Engine version.

I was also trying to play "Sapphire" today in Magic Engine, and obviously I had the wrong Syscard picked. Well, to let me know it wouldn't play, I had this girl laying in a bikini with some Japanese writing over it.

Thanks guys!

I'm with CStarFlare, Pretas, and Skykid on this. I had a few lines that were pretty much what they said, and I got rid of them after noticing those posts, haha.

Do it! You'll never regret it. Games are kinda pricey, but you can get all the porno games you want for shillings.

Not nearly as much as PCE, but there are a few MD games with a small amount of nudity. Mystic Defender/Peacock King 2 comes to mind. The JP version actually has nudity on the back of the case.

Not completely sure on this, but weren't some of the things censored in the TG-16 Bonk games also in Super Genjin 2 SFC?

Does the PCE Langrisser have nudity? I haven't heard anything, but I heard the artist does hentai.
