Just got another game chirashi flyer. This time it's Puyo Puyo CD for the PC Engine.

Recently picked up Espgaluda 2.

Was able to purchase this game including three other xbox 360 shmups in December from an independent video game retro store in central Ohio called "Warp Zone" games.

Giving a shout out because of the ability to support and buy directly from a shop which is owned by a shmup enthusiast and collector who puts on monthly Shmup events and contests.

Tonight, (Saturday) there will be a Don Pachi contest at his store after hours. Last shmup meet was PC Engine caravan shmups and gave away a PC Engine shuttle plus other prizes for the winnings.

Great independent store with massive retro games and Japanese imports for every system. You can also buy super play DVD's there and will do preorders.

Anyways, if one resides in Central Ohio, Warp Zone games is the place to check out. They don't have a website but can be found through Facebook.

Well, I couldn't help grabbing it. eBay auction, it was like $70 shipped. Always wanted a Metal Slug, I figure this is one of the better ones?

Metal Slug X was always my favourite.

Unfortunately I was sick and didn't feel up to being out in public.

However, looking forward to next months session.

I met you briefly at the PC Engine caravan shmup meet in December. I was the part Korean guy who asked about the shmup scene in Columbus.

Anyhow, congratulations on your Don Pachi win!

I don't smoke or anything, but these things look so damned cool. Plus I just have a thing for refillable gadgets. For a Chinese product I'm quite impressed with the fit & finish.

I sometimes carry a Bic lighter if I'm expecting to light birthday candles or sparklers or crap, maybe now in a pinch I can even torch some crème brulée

One will be to carry occasionally, the other will be kept in my motorcycle in case I get stranded in the middle of nowhere and need to set something on fire to keep warm...

The Asciiware stick will teach me not to buy any more cheap arcade sticks, thanks. The miracle didn't happen second time around either. Does not always auto-center and the buttons have clearly had it with its previous user(s). That being said, not all is bad. With the PSX/PS2-to-GameCube/Wii adapter I hooked up, not only SCII, but even Tatsunoko vs Capcom detects it. (I had no luck trying to play the latter with my other PlayStation controllers.) Also, Raiden III (PC) played with it felt good, even though no serious practice can be done the way things are. All in all, seems like a good place to get into maintenance and/or modding (what I would be hasitant to start practicing upon more expensive toys).

Now, the good.

My first flight stick and for the price, it was bargain. Almost enough said, but I might add the rocking button works a treat (I don't feel like twisting a stick in flight sims, but you can have it both ways here if you like) and so does the d-pad (micro stick).

the asciiware stick is not that bad for shooters but terrible for fighters.. it's autofire is great. i used it for playing varth in the shooter tournament years ago and it fired much much faster (enemies died quicker) than any autofire i could find in mame/joy 2 key etc

I can tell it wasn't bad out of the box. Will see what I can do for the sake of its restoration.

I used to have one of those ASCIIware sticks, the buttons were gross.
ASCIIware also made at least two pads with the same autofire features which are great for padhacks and custom sticks.

A Christmas present, forgot how good From Russia With Love is.

My Docs finally fell apart. They did well, they lasted 12 years which is all you can ask for really from a boot. Let's see if these CAT ones hold up as long (I suspect not). They're called 'Abe', there are metal screws in the soles, they're solid. I now sound like a rhino walking on the raised floors at work.

After moaning for quite a long time that there were no good figures of the major from GITS, I finally found one - hand painted by Yeti-Art, under their budget line. Pretty happy with it and the price wasn't hideous.

It's been so long that I don't know if anybody could possibly know who sent them along, but while dusting off a couple cabinets I found a stack of some game promo pamphlets from the last decade: Phantasy Star Zero, one of the Yakuza games, Resident Evil 5, Left 4 Dead, and...Ninja Gaiden for Xbox! I dusted 'em off and I'll look for a better place for them. Thanks, whoever sent me those!

Nothing says KONTORA like hot pink. Image Totally pwnz the NES version with its level select so you can get straight to loop 2.

Bill Rizer has one up on the rednecks - he's bump firing that shit with his fuckin' pecs, man. (Well, maybe his bicep, but note the curiously high rate of body/gun synchronization! Bill Rizer Is The Final Machine.)

Shit, never knew the Famicom version had any differences. Gotta track that down. Bill and Lance are one of the reasons I work out. All I want in life is to be in a Contra game.

I dig the Noriko Gunbuster figure from Bome. Usually pretty nice figures for a budget. If you can ever find the Kotobukiya Noriko figure, though, you'll never look back. Took me forever to find an "affordable" one, but goddamn, it's worth it. Probably best goddamn figure I own. ^_~

FC Contra's extras are mostly fluff for the opening, inter-stage and ending sequences (luckily all skippable). But it does add some really cool scenery animations to a few spots, and the stage select cheat is good if you want to get the loops' faster bullets sooner. It keeps track of loops up to six, with an additional Image on the extraction choppah after each - never gets terribly harder, but it's kind of amusing to see the game slowing down by the third or so with so many runners onscreen.

A loop select would've really been nice, but as is it's more of a neat fan item than an essential upgrade over the good ol' NES cart. Of course neat fan items are just what we elitist pricks do. Image
Ed Oscuro wrote:note the curiously high rate of body/gun synchronization! Bill Rizer Is The Final Machine.
Indeed, and one reason of many why FC Super Contra just doesn't have the same Konami lovin' feeling as the first game. Even when you hit the onscreen bullet limit, Bill and Lance keep bumpin' as long as you're mashing B. :[ None of that pantomimin' malarkey in the orginal! A shame Super didn't get some of the first's bells n' whistles, it could've actually used them.

I forgot to list the MMP kit.

Last year was a rough year... Job hunt etc. Starting this one off with a bang. Need to find a boxed copy of contra myself. That and get the a/v famicom rgb modded.
