Yellow Light of Death fix question...
I work at Target, and I mentioned to this guy who works in electronics that my PS3 got the ylod. He said that it's easy to fix, and mentioned something about holding down the power button until it beeps a certain number of times. He never mentioned using a blow dryer, which I've heard about. He told me to look up this fix on Youtube, but I can't find any ylod fixes on there that don't involve a blow dryer or taking the console apart.
I've got a few days off from work, so if anyone knows the exact steps required in this fix, feel free to outline them. I'm sure as heck not going to buy a new PS3, as much as Sony is over charging (IMO) for them.

Holding down the power button for a while will eventually do a factory reset, which may fix the problem, but I'd say it's unlikely to do so.

You can do that, but Holograph is right: YLOD is typically a hardware related problem. If you need to, here's a link to reflowing the PS3. Otherwise I would either have someone reball it for you or buy a new one.

How long do you have to hold it down for? Because I've done it several times, and nothing comes up on my HDTV, and everything was connected as it should be.Holograph wrote:Holding down the power button for a while will eventually do a factory reset, which may fix the problem, but I'd say it's unlikely to do so.

What you're doing is going to safe mode. You should first turn off the PS3 by seeing a red light. Once that's done, hold the power button on the PS3 until you hear three beeps. Then it should go into safe mode.dave4shmups wrote:How long do you have to hold it down for? Thanks for the link! I tried those techniques several times, but I couldn't even get into Safe Mode, or get any other picture out of my PS3. Which tells me that it must be really messed up.beatsgo wrote:What you're doing is going to safe mode. You should first turn off the PS3 by seeing a red light. I could try the new hard drive thing with that guy at work, or ask the guy in electronics if he could please fix it. Right now, I'm leaning towards buying the 12gig PS3. I never play more then one game at a time, and I'm not interested in playing online (which means I'm not going to have anything huge-like DC Universe Online). I don't know how much hdd space the average PS3 game takes up, but I could buy this at Target, get my team member discount, and get an additional 5% off with my Target debit card.
I could look for a cheapo one on Ebay, sold by a top-rated seller. I'm certainly NEVER going to buy a used refurbished console from GameStop again.
I know there are other PS3 skus on the market that have more storage and games bundled in, but I don't see Sony dropping the price of any of those anytime soon-if ever.

What you actually want is a BGA reball. Or to toss that in the trash and buy a super slim.

I'll just take it up to Best Buy, because they recycle electronics. As much as people gripe about plastic bags, e-waste (cellphones, HDTVs, and broken game consoles) is a LOT worse for the environment.speedlolita wrote:What you actually want is a BGA reball. I'm guessing he was talking about the PS3 "fan test", which you can trigger by doing some sequence with the power button. It makes the fans run at full and supposedly will help clean out some dust.
It will do nothing for a YLODed console.

Re: Yellow Light of Death fix question...
put it on ebay for a $1 starting bid. make sure you state in the auction it's got the ylod. someone who knows how to fix it will grab it up, and you'll make some money. think i got about $60 listing my brothers console a few years back.dave4shmups wrote:I'll just take it up to Best Buy, because they recycle electronics. True. I don't usually have the resolve to sell something that's broken.
Binned a launch JP 360 one time. Should have fixed it really, I didn't even try to.

Adding to this, be absolutely certain you list as 'for parts/not working'.brokenhalo wrote:put it on ebay for a $1 starting bid. make sure you state in the auction it's got the ylod. someone who knows how to fix it will grab it up, and you'll make some money. think i got about $60 listing my brothers console a few years back.dave4shmups wrote:I'll just take it up to Best Buy, because they recycle electronics.
