Edge - 348'300 - 1-3
What troll came up with that fire walls in stage 3 popping out of nowhere?
I actually really like the Gradius games, but never liked Salamander at all. Just into stage 3, but already too much memorization required. Even the first boss is pretty much a guaranteed death, until you know what you are supposed to do.
Well, with that tournament I can finally try to get a bit more into the game and see the later stages.

Argh, can't seem to find a decent strat for stage 4 boss. Seems like a major roadblock
also love that avatar, Edge, it's from The Last Blade II right? Played it a few months back but found it hard to get into a fighter that there's no longer any scene for..

@ Edge: thank you for joining our contest. We would like our contestants to post a screenshot of their hi-scoreEdge wrote:Edge - 635200 - Stage 1-5
It's very easy to do. When using this guide you can have MAME capture your hi-score screen for you INSIDE the Mame snap directory. Because it uses Mame to capture the screenshot you don't need to use any extra software (e.g. Fraps) or special mobile devices
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Game on !!

I don't have enough firepower with the current teammate i have. Maybe he surprises me. Jaimers and Erppo are going to be tough to beat. Of course, its all in fun.

stage 3 tells you everything in advance, it's stage 4 with the splitting rocks that's a problem.

Yeah, if you try to fight him normally, that guy is extremely difficult. You should try to look for some kind of exploit. For instance, if you position yourself at the top right of the screen the left turret will shoot in a weird angle that it's balls become stuck inside the wall. Or you can try to make it shoot straight down, so the balls bounce just back upwards like Legendary Haomaru did.Blinge wrote:Argh, can't seem to find a decent strat for stage 4 boss.
Hehe, thanks. That's right I haven't played that game in ages though.Blinge wrote:also love that avatar, Edge, it's from The Last Blade II right? Played it a few months back but found it hard to get into a fighter that there's no longer any scene for..
Yeah, I know what you mean the people around you pretty much dictate what fighting game you keep playing. Most of my friends and colleages play Street Fighter, so I have been stuck with that game for the last 2 years. Altough I would rather play more Tekken or maybe get into the new King of Fighters. :p

The tunnel before the last boss destroyed me. Getting there without missiles decreases survival chances drastically. :p

I agree, It's not explicitly stage 3 that's the problem. But it's just there's couple of elements in each stage you need to memorize. Best approach is to credit feed / use some save states to learn the stages ahead, so you don't die a certain death whenever you reach one of those 'know it or die' spots. Overall I wouldn't call it a bad game. It's cool that they tried out some stuff to get rid of the Gradius syndrome and the graphics and music are really nice, but it definitely has some flaws.Despatche wrote:stage 3 tells you everything in advance, it's stage 4 with the splitting rocks that's a problem.

At the start position yourself at the top left corner of the screen and wait for him to send out both arms. The moment he starts moving circle under him counterclockwise and go behind him. Your options will trail through him, killing him in seconds.Aleksei wrote:After two days, I'm officially bored and tired of this game.

Stay lined up with the core on the bottom of the screen when he first comes out. When he begins his circular movement make sure to stay under him as you follor with your own small clockwise movement, rather than going behind him. When he gets to the right side he will move very low forcing you to begin circling around his left side. LIke boss one, your options will trail through him, attempt to keep them lined up with the core to kill him very quickly.Shimatora wrote:

For anyone still having trouble with this, in order to save you some time and effort do the following. At the start postion yourself a little away from the top left corner of the screen so that when the top firewall shoots out it will fly under your ship rather than hitting you. Try to leave your options trailed under you when you do this. Literally just hold fire and stay in this position for about half the stage. You will eventually have a firewall from above that repeatedly shoots out at a fast rate trapping you. Watch the timing and fly straight forward out of its arc when you see your chance. After passing the two ground firewalls fly down to the bottom of the screenand just sit tight until you get to the boss.Edge wrote:What troll came up with that fire walls in stage 3 popping out of nowhere?
As mentioned earlier, this boss is bullshit in design and you have to use a trick to beat him. In the PCE version his bullets are drastically slowed down, so clearly the developers also saw it was a problem. The end of this vid demonstrates the proper method nicely:Blinge wrote:Argh, can't seem to find a decent strat for stage 4 boss. Seems like a major roadblock

Anyone else think this game is extremely unpolished? That said, I'm enjoying it despite my better judgement. Hope these tips help people out.

Re: round 1 of shootemup contest
yes, this game is hilariously unpolished, the complete opposite of gradius (because let's face it, this is the real "gradius ii", not some "spinoff"). let's see... the weird movements of literally everything that makes you feel like you're going to die to some crazy hitboxes every five seconds? that giant dead space between stage 2 and the boss, etc? the weird scoring where it seems like stage 1 gives you a little over 200k and every other gives you a little under 100k? weird game.

Re: round 1 of shootemup contest
what did you people expect from 1986
Re: round 1 of shootemup contest
Considering Gradius feels very polished and this is the followup to Gradius, I expected it to not appear totally halfassed. Again though, I'm having fun despite the flaws.ebarrett wrote:what did you people expect from 1986

edit: grammar and
yea, it also looks like he died on the wall just before, so no speedups, makes it even harderACSeraph wrote:EDIT: Oh I see, I didn't even notice that screenshot was from the second loop.

My tips are only from the first loop, stuff I figured out last night while practicing. I haven't reached the loop yet.Yazphier wrote:...Not as sure that that works the second loop..ACSeraph wrote:At the start position yourself at the top left corner of the screen and wait for him to send out both arms.
