Darius Odyssey Book

Post by Aleksei »

Hey guys, I've been busy with school and work and so I haven't been of the forum in a while but I want to do a quick update and say I received the Darius Odysssy book and its marvelous. I will post a video of the insides around the break (15th-ish) but I wanted help on translation of what was on the cover strip, see the photo attached as it shows a date in the future, its probably nothing big but any Darius news is big news to me. I hope on day to be able to read every word of the book so I might do scans or photos and our wonderful community can translate

Oh, man. Are you ever lucky to have that. And yeah, I'm now a big Darius fan too now (haven't been into STG games like this since the Gradius series), so if you can privide scans of that entire book (don't even have to be high quality, though prefered, as something is better then nothing) + someone here a fan enough of this series to translate this, and I'll be one happy Darius fan. Plus this should help spread awareness of this much underappreciated series, cause once someone crosses into Darius fandom (cause it does seems to take some time for this series to click with folks), there's no turning back. So here's hoping for the best.

I really don't think it is under appreciated. Would Taito have really gone to the trouble to release a Taikan like Dariusburst in 2011 if there wasn't much of a fan-base? True, its following is largely domestic, but Japan knows a good thing when they see it. ;)

My kanji ability is too shit to give you a good translation, but it's talking about some kind of giveaway (darius swag) so I assume the date is the deadline for participation.

The book came with a set of clear files and a comic in some circles. You can buy it from Play Asia with this stuff, but because of the weight only courier shipping is available, which guarantees customs charges on top. That means the book + extras would probably end up around the £60 mark all in - way too much considering its original 2000 yen price tag.

Yeah that's ridiculous, way too much. I've been considering buying it since it's still 2000 on Amazon JP, but I kind of want to see the contents first. I don't want it if it only has Darius Burst stuff.

It's got stuff from all the games, however I've seen some places tout it as a guide book rather than an artbook, meaning it might be text heavy. I'm hoping for lots of pretty pictures instead.

I concur - if it's a series art book then I want it.

A Darius art book akin to Capcom's Megaman art books would be hella sweet.

It's mostly art. I'm doing a translation at the moment of the Zuntata interview in the back, so stay tuned for that in the next week or so. You can see some pics here:

That's what I meant by 'domestic'. ;)

Buy what shooting games have a big following in the west anyway? Gradius is well-known, but I wouldn't even say that has a following, sadly. People just tend to crow on about R-Type a lot whenever you mention shmups - a game that tends to be many people's entire experience of the genre.

Which is fine. If your experience started with R-Type, then the only way forward is downhill.

A bump because I'm still interested in knowing about what the text says and possibly how to enter the contest.

Oh wow! Love the series, thanks for the heads up Rancor and Aleksei. Looking into getting this. (Now I need to keep a better eye on the 'awesome stuff' thread now too).

I live in the US, think this is the best way to get it? (Says unreleased currently) Thanks.

I can get the book shipped out to you for $40 if you're looking for a cheaper option. PM me if you're interested.

Currently working on translating the interview at the back with Zuntata, and should have that out in the next few days. Thanks to those that purchased a copy - you make it possible for me to have the time to do these projects and give back to the community. Look for the thread soon.

@*anyone*

How many boss/mid-boss characters are represented in this book? My interest is beyond piqued!

All of them, I counted over 100 (variations of some of course). It is definitely worth owning.

Are Twin and Force represented? And the Super Darius II exclusives? I've always dreamed of a comprehensive gallery of the entire Darius series captains and bosses. I can't wait to get my hands on this.

Chapters are: G Darius, Darius, Darius Gaiden, Darius II, Burst, Burst Another Chronicle. There's a lot of nice art. Final production stuff but also more concept-y sketches. Pretty cool overall.
