Awesome Games Done Quick 2014

Post by Vexorg »

Just a quick reminder that AGDQ 2014 starts tomorrow, and runs all through next week. I spent way too much time watching last year's AGDQ, and there looks to be some good stuff on the lineup again this year.

Indeed, hope my crappy internet will disallow me from watching too much this year
Somehow watching people wreck games I mostly don't even play can be as interesting as watching progress boxes fill(i.e. a lot).

I've spent the last couple weeks watching the 2013 runs I skipped. Love the event, it's fun to watch and hear commentary even on games I've never played.

AGDQ's fantastic. Didn't get to watch any of the runs live before, so I'm excited.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

So much to look forward to in this years line up, personally planning on enjoying bloodlines first appearance at a agdq.

Two Crude Dudes and Shinobi Legions should not be in the awful game section. >:(

Highlights : Mr. Domino and Power Shovel. Also Super Mario World TAS that reprograms the game.

Edit: Also Sonic R.

Yeah, the arbitrary code execution on Super Mario World using nothing but controller input was pretty ridiculous. Videos and more info here:

I'll have to catch the WTF Japan block later, since it started at something like 2am here.

I can't think of a better game for speedrunning than Yoshi's Island (for the 100% - any% isn't so interesting). Maybe Super Metroid. I guess it's a little long for single session play and the transformations/forced scrolling sections slow it down a bit, but otherwise it's amazing.

OK, I have to say that the F-Zero GX Very Hard run this year was even more insane than last year's run.

They broke 500k during Borderlands 2. There's over 40 hours left, and the last day has some of the bigger games of the run. Should be good.

Unfortunately, turns out I've got a bunch of work stuff going on tomorrow, otherwise I think I'd be glued to the stream from 5 PM tonight to whenever Chrono Trigger ends.

I don't even understand what's going on in that video, but admittedly didn't really play the game.

Watched the 2013 Dark Souls run...which isn't world record, but was interesting since it used a low level pyro build, and no weapons for most of the game.

The four-way Super Metroid race was amazing. If you like incredibly technical speedruns with precise movement and execution throughout, you should not have missed it. It's 6.30am here, yes I stayed up to watch it.
Unlucky to Garrison for losing via huge amounts of bad luck and eventual death. The race ended with a photo finish between Ivan, Zoast and Krauser, barely seconds between them. Amazing stuff.
(Spore Spawn RTA was hilarious.)

You won't get anything remotely like that from just playing the game normally. Basically, he got something into Yoshi's mouth that wasn't supposed to be there, and when the game searched a different location, the locations of previous things he planted confused the game further into looking for data from the controller ports. If I remember right, they had a special controller setup: Instead of five pins, they hooked up two more, and on top of that they used a multi-tap style thing to maximize the number of "controllers" leading to the machine. This in turn allowed them to push a bunch of new data into the game for Snake, Pong, and the new menu + graphic.

Looking forward to Goldeneye and Perfect Dark for some oldschool speedrunning madness.

Will be interesting to see if they can actually pull off the first level completion in a few seconds...don't know if that's possible in normal gameplay or not, but I think it might be.

In Perfect Dark? I think the success rate is actually quite high for that OOB trick.

Did they get some big last minute donations? I went to bed when it was around $880k and though 1 million was really stretching it considering how little time was left (I think they'd started CT?)

No, they just got a shitton of donations. The million happened during the final battle of Chrono Trigger.

that really got me by surprise, i honestly expected them to raise less money than last year.

twitch doesn't let you watch old recordings off the site anymore, does it? i only see stuff from 2013 on the agdq twitch page.
