I had a couple friends and my brother over the other night and we played a lot of Gradius III, IV, and V.
I was surprised to see that the three of them ALL liked Gradius IV the best....and these guys don't play a lot of shmups. I actually thought they would hate III and IV but enjoy V for the co-op and visuals...but they enjoyed them all but IV was their favorite. Personally V is still my favorite of the Gradius series...but I've yet to play Gaiden.

Yeah, I had a friend over and I don't know how it happened, but eventually it ended up with him playing Gradius IV. Made it all the way to the bubble boss, where he was stuck. I was like alright, give it up, but no, he keept on wanting to go "I can't stop now, I have to beat him at least." It was funny, I first I thought I noticed him do something wrong, then he said, "how much health does this guy have?" I was like "You have to hit the core!" He was like "What?! So that's what I had to do?" I was like "What? You never heard of Gradius? You're supposed to be born with that knowledge. Everyone should know Gradius. Especially us the NES generation." I switched the pad back and forth a bit to give him an idea. He wouldn't except me beating him either. He even timed him out once, but that wasn't good enough. Finally he beat him and he was satified enough. He's actually a pretty dam fine gamer too, beating some old school games I thought were very hard, like NES TMNT 1. Still trying to get him into Japanese shmups (he only played Western shmup Tyrin in his life due to chance of it being left on his PC Drive or something), but I don't see him enough, especially now and he's pretty freakin busy with work. But was pretty surprised he was so into Gradius IV?royalfan84 wrote:I had a couple friends and my brother over the other night and we played a lot of Gradius III, IV, and V.

you mean Tyrian? Anyway I don't think your should try that hard to get him to try wapanese shmoops, if he already saw what they looked like and disagreed, he's probably just into the other kind of dodging more.Sinful wrote:Yeah, I had a friend over and I don't know how it happened, but eventually it ended up with him playing Gradius IV. p-47, usaaf mustang, aces... they're all about as different from each other, i'd call them a series. kinda like how xmultiply is so closely related to r-type.
btw, r-type. it's the best overall series; only final really screws up, and even then...

Rage Pro, Rage Fury, Rage MAXX!
Re: Best horizontal series?
I bought Gradius Collection for my PSP for £2, and even though I tested IV and Gaiden, just never quite got on with the "title". I've stuck it on the internet for sale... I assume I'm making a mistake?
Sony Vita: More Lives Than A Cat!!!
Re: Best horizontal series?
Einhander is amazing. That one game can take on all mentioned shmup franchises combined.royalfan84 wrote:Einhander

Does Armed Police Unit Gallop count as R-Type? (Wikipedia does so iirc)

Pretty amazing how Squaresoft absolutely put most shmup developers to shame with their first effort and then never made a shmup again.replayme wrote:Einhander is amazing. That one game can take on all mentioned shmup franchises combined.royalfan84 wrote:Einhander
