Game of the year 2013: Verdict is in
And Nintendo takes it, according to EG:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013- ... -year-2013
I haven't played the game, but I'd wager the call is probably accurate. I'm still not interested in a Wii U though - they should port it directly to 3DS to recover the sales lost and the development expenses.
Anyone else got a call for Game of the Year? Everything I play tends to be from 1991, but I had a great time with Dragon's Crown.

Pretty shitty year, to be honest. I'd just go for SOUND VOLTEX II.

My personal vote would be for SMT4 followed by Dragon's Crown, but even those choices illustrate that it hasn't been a phenomenal year. Almost everything I've enjoyed playing has been a throwback to a well tested genre (SMT4 literally brings nothing new to the table, despite being a really well made and enjoyable game), and while I'm not one to complain when there are good titles being released, it's nothing like Q4 2011 when Dark Souls and Skyrim came out within spitting distance of each other.
Isn't like 2013 hasn't had a few interesting games, but a lot of them are future budget bin purchases for me.

Love that article's nod to the strength of the 3DS's 2013 lineup. Pretty outstanding year for what looked like a gimmicky platform.
GOTY for me? That's easy: fire emblem awakenings. Still haven't finished my lunatic no-miss run. Really appreciate the challenge.

Actually, Fire Emblem got a lot of love, and I was impressed by the demo - which is something for me because RTS isn't something I've ever managed to get into. It was cited, along with general 3DS praise in the 2013 awards article:professor ganson wrote:Love that article's nod to the strength of the 3DS's 2013 lineup. I just completed 3DW a few minutes ago. It's a great game that's certainly worthy of any GotY awards it'll receive from gaming review sites, but I'd probably have it as #3 or 4 on my GotY list. (Saidaioujou >> EDF4 > Volgarr > 3DW > Sonic Transformed)

Looks like EG's readers have better taste than their editorial staff:
10. Hotline Miami
9. Spelunky
8. XCOM: Enemy Within
7. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
6. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
5. Super Mario 3D World
4. Tomb Raider
3. Bioshock Infinite
2. Grand Theft Auto V
1. The Last of Us
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013- ... es-of-2013
An original survival horror action/adventure from Naughty Dog is far more deserving of the GOTY award than yet another Mario platformer(the fourth in two years).

You make it sound as though it qualifies purely based on the fact it's an original Naughty Dog survival horror adventure?Jonathan Ingram wrote: An original survival horror action/adventure from Naughty Dog is far more deserving of the GOTY award than yet another Mario platformer(the fourth in two years).
I have no idea about either, but I'd hazard a guess that it was judged by which was the better game, rather than concept.

Spelunky without a shadow of a doubt for me. This is the sort of game Nintendo could make if they weren't so concerned about including everybody, its that good.

The Last of Us is Destructoid's game of the year too.
Personally, I'm more interested in TLOU than 3D World. But that's just me.
Edit: here's the link...

Edit x 2: Kotaku also gave TLoU the same accolade.

1) The Last of Us - 22
2) Grand Theft Auto V - 19
3) Assassin's Creed IV - 13
4) Gone Home - 11
5) Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - 9
6) BioShock Infinite - 8
6) Ni No Kuni - 8
7) Fire Emblem: Awakening - 5
7) Papers, Please - 5
Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 4
Injustice: Gods Among Us - 4
Kentucky Route Zero - 4
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - 4
9) Saints Row IV - 3
9) The Stanley Parable - 3
10) Pikmin 3 - 2
11) Pokémon X & Y - 1
11) Tomb Raider - 1"

I'm disturbed that anyone would even consider Tomb Raider as a GotY title. That's desperation.

Re: Game of the year 2013: Verdict is in
Right now game of the year is probably not making any money right now.
I think game of the year by far is 2012 ( sadly I might add )
Terraria
Blade Kitten
Vulgar the Viking
Portal series
Pokemon XY ( if they got rid of the extra background graphics )
The best game I have seen by so far is Vulgar the Viking. You have to buy or at least send some money to the people who made this game. It is amazing.
( a couple more titles comes to mind, but I can't think )
that is about it, everything else, is just the same FMV crap ( not to be rude ) from the 1990's that failed, when we had the lesser known "Dotcom" crash. Tomb Raider was even on Conan, and Conan is not a videogame person, he is a teather person. The same could be said about most things featured on G4tv, They kept Adam and Morgan Webb. I miss when we had call for help, and other shows like unscrewed. G4tv is the home shopping network channel dumbed down.
I don't know it is very hard, because every newer console, has a TOS agreement ( I don't know about the Wiiu ), and I should not have to agree to anything just to turn on my system and play something. Every five year old is going to agree to something they do not understand. Then their is that upgrade.
I would rather mod the system and find some other way to play online.

Re: Game of the year 2013: Verdict is in
I actually bought Rayman Legends on Vita today (£15), but just emailed the seller to cancel my order as I decided to pick up a few PC titles instead (some of which have been referred to as GoTY material). I also felt a bit guilty on spending £30 when this would have allowed me to pick up TLoU.
Another World - £1.99
Ys 1 and 2 - £2.99
Ys Origins - £3.24
Papers Please - £2.99
Gone Home - £4.35
Total is £15.56
I've seen the trailer for Volgarr the Viking, and its Magic Sword/Black Tiger style gameplay just seems too "retro" for my liking. Plus, it looks ridiculously hard.
Edit: out of that Kotaku list, I now own the following:
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
BioShock Infinite
Ni No Kuni
Papers, Please
Tomb Raider
Edit x 2: Total Biscuit referred to Brothers as his favourite game of all time. I should be playing that after I complete MGS Revengeance on console.

It's mediocre as all hell. Tries way to hard to implement every new gimmick in modern gaming: QTEs out the ass, skill point allocation, hunting, item collecting, stealth, gunplay--all done poorly. The game switches gears in a hearbeat to try and shove all this shit in, never really keeping each gameplay element in the game longer than a few scenarios. Tries to take itself way too serious to "reinvent" a dead series, but only achieves a poor man's Uncharted with a thousand stupid gimmicks and a lackluster experience. It's such a pile of shit, either as a Tomb Raider game or a stand alone title. Pure drivel.
