Cheers GP, gave Macaw a PM at Gamengai.
I'm a sucker for run-and-guns with strafing, liking this one a lot. Fisting tanks and APCs up their tailpipes is good fun too! Would prefer to have the option of "Expert Mode" before picking up the port, though.
edit: woot woot. Found out how to enable Expert Mode. Press shoot + subweapon when starting a new game. Now this port is "AWWWRIGHT!"

One thing I've noticed is that the Japanese version actually gives each of the 64 possible mech configurations its own name. I can understand how some of them wouldn't fit in the English version, though (never mind that the translators were obviously having troubles, and not just the Ragnarok/Lagnalok bit. q.v. the 5-D boss. In the English, it's just called "Gargantua". In the Japanese? "Hrimthurs", a type of Jotun, so fitting with Ragnarok's Norse theme. It starts with "fu", though, rather than one of the kana pronounced "h" and a following modifier to suggest "hu", so I can see the translators REALLY getting scrambled with that one.).
My personal bomber/mobility pick is B-*-A. Bullet-negating Electrigger, and a good mix of speed and jumping. The four types' names:
BAA (Type-50): Senden/Lightning Flash
BBA (Type-51): Shiden/Violet Lightning
BCA (Type-52): Shinden/Magnificent Lightning (although the "shin" literally means "tremble" or "quake"...); this is my preferred one thus far.
BDA (Type-53): Raika/Lightning Fire
EDIT: I'm going to start listing the names for each mech formation. If you see a blank spot, it means I'm having problems finding one of the kanji (I use Skip-Halpern).
01/AAA: Souryu/Blue Dragon (maybe it could be pronounced Seiryu this way?)
02/BBB: Tenrai/Thunder
03/CCC: Hiryu/Firedrake
04/DDD: Shinryu/Holy Dragon
05/ABA:
06/ACA: Byakko/White Tiger
07/ADA: Jinou/Noble King
08/AAB: Jinkaze/Gust (the "jin" signifies "battle array")
09/ABB: Yukikaze/Snow Wind
10/ACB: Shitsukaze/Fierce Wind ("shitsu"="rapidly")
11/ADB: Retsukaze/Gale ("retsu"="violent")
12/AAC: Kokuryu/Black Dragon
13/ABC: Garyu/Fang Dragon (oddly, the "ryu" isn't the same kanji as the previous ones, but according to Jeffrey's, they mean exactly the same things, "dragon" and "imperial". Go figure.)
14/ACC:
15/ADC: Hakuryu/White Dragon
16/AAD: Mizuchi/Dragon (just one kanji, even if hearing it would make you think "water serpent")
17/ABD: Senga/Flashing Fangs (...I'm sure there's an idiom I'm missing here)
18/ACD:
19/ADD: Kouryu/Light Dragon (the same as the Yellow Dragon associated with the Four Heavenly Kings?)
20/DAA:
21/DBA: Tsurugi/Sword (not a katana or other ittou, but more like a Chinese sword)
22/DCA: Ouga/King Fang

My apologies for awakening this ancient thread, but I found a Japanese fansite:
http://www.wolffang.in/info.htm
Important part is, I was able to ferret out all the names for the 64 different mechs and get them translated. Just go here--http://www.wolffang.in/fang/bunseki/d_2p.htm--look up the parts set you want, and check down here for the number you gain.

Notes on 20 and 23: Exasperatingly, it looks like they BOTH refer to the peregrine falcon. Junyou, though, has an extra kanji in there for some reason, as though referring to some sort of falcon among falcons. Hence, my attempt at distinguishing it from 20 by calling it "Gyrfalcon".
29: Probably as in Zaou Gongen, a bodhisattva unique to Shugendou.
56: "Sky Lightning" is actually the literal translation. I'm not sure whether the better idiomatic term would be "Sprite", "Anvil Crawler", or something else. (空電 is what's used.)
64: Jeffrey's got me a definition of "military exploits"; hopefully, "Triumph" gets the point across.

Breaking news: Dodonpachi Developer Cave Releases Hello Kitty Game
Re: The official Wolf Fang love-in thread!!....
Wow, way to resurrect an old topic!
Actually, I just recently bought this game for the Saturn. I understand that it usually goes for a fairly high price, but I bought it for about 3,000 yen (minus the obi). I've only played it a bit, but I can definitely see its influence on the Gunhound EX game for the PSP (at least on the sliding level). It doesn't feel the same as a Leynos/Valken game, and that is actually what I was expecting. This feels a bit more arcade-y, but I just expected to be able to shoot in more directions.

If you still care to know...Strider77 wrote:is this game of equal quality on the saturn and ps1?

The Saturn version is inferior and has a considerable amount of slowdown in places. The PSX version never slows down, as far as I remember.
Re: The official Wolf Fang love-in thread!!....
Really? It's hard to believe that this is another of the rare occasions when the Saturn port of a 2D game is actually inferior to the PS1 version. I imagine it's the fault of programming rather than a lacking in hardware.

Re: The official Wolf Fang love-in thread!!....
Yes definitely. Saturn is more equipped to 2D games than PSX, so the only reason for a worse port is bad programming.

I noticed that this was released a few years ago:
http://www.yujin-figure.com/blog/diary.cgi?no=59
I'm actually curious as to whether there was any particular reason why the Suisei/Comet (Electrigger, Knuckle Shot, 2-Hover) was used for the Wolf Fang representative, instead of one of the four default fighters, especially since the only difference between the default Tenrai/Thunder and the non-default Comet is that the Thunder has a Beam Sword, while the Comet uses the Knuckle Shot. That is, their only visual difference is in the left arm. Granted that going by the Construction Mode gauges, the Comet is the most mobility-geared fighter available. For the record, the most offense-oriented is the Yaksa (Grenade Launcher, Pile Bunker, 4-Wheel).
