Y's Games on PS2 (not just Ark)

Post by undamned »

I've been playing through "Y's: Ark of the Napishtim" and did some searching to see what other PS2 Y's games were out there, and Falcom has actually redone most of their Y's series for the PS2! Here's my issue, though:

Does anybody know if there is an English language mode on any of those?

I don't know if I can bring myself to do an online walkthrough of the entire game :?

There's no English version of any of the PS2 games aside from Ys VI. The Ys I & II collection was going to be brought to the US by NEC Interchannel's US branch, but SCEA blocked the game. I recall hearing that Taito was interested in bringing the Ys remakes they've published on PS2 to the US, but nothing has come of that yet.

Did you also find the last few boss fights disappointingly easy?

Once you've got Ericcil powered up to the highest level all you have to do is stay away from the bosses and wait for the magic to recharge. They should have restricted the player's movement in some way to force him to fight the last bosses with melee attacks. Even Napishtim is a cakewalk if you use this cowardly strategy, because the only thing that can even remotely trouble you are the yellow lasers of its first form, but those are the ones that are gone first. Hell, I wish the eye of the ark would have at least aimed at the player instead of randomly shooting in various directions.

But let's not be nitpicky. I thought it was a very fine game and a lot of fun to play through, even though the CG cutscenes and the english voice acting are pretty much inexcusable. Why would anyone want to put so much time effort and money into making a game worse?

In the european version they even removed the japanese voices completely, along with the anime cutscenes (except for the two with no speech in them), so you can't even watch them by using cheat codes. Shame on you, Konami.

Anyway, now I'm motivated to dig out my old Master System version of Ys 1 again and finally finish my playthrough.

Yeah, they were pretty easy, but they were fun, except the second to the last boss was unfair because one of the attacks was unavoidable and you had to resort to using your healing items out of necessity.

The bosses for the Oath in Felghana are a different story, and they are somewhat more challenging on the harder difficulties.

Also the PS2 ports of Ys I and II were taken from the Eternal (remastered) versions of Ys I and II for the PC. If you're willing to spend a lot of money, you can get both games from Falcom directly and get it patched in English.

Hopefully the forthcoming "improved" PSP version of Ys: Arc of Napishtim won't have these problems...

This isnt much my kind of game, but I hear many people say that the Ys games on MSX are incredibly good. I have played them briefly, so I cant say much about them. And AFAIK, all three games (YS I, II and III) got english versions on MSX.

If anyone is interested , heh :)
