If you have to make up so much additional shit, why even bother to tie it directly to Raiden? Just write a series of short stories, or a novel, or whatever, and then just drop in little callbacks to Raiden (name some huge "boss" enemies something similar to Raiden bosses maybe?).

Well, I feel like not enough people actually bother to look deeper into the Raiden series, and being my favorite shmup series, I want to create my own fanfiction about it. Nobody has written any Raiden fanfiction yet (wait, I take that back, I did come across 1 story, however it is a Raiden Fighters/Starfox crossover, but I didn't really like how it was not written too well) http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4435589/1/R ... r-Fighters
Anyway, I will begin to think about how I will start this over the next few weeks, and I'll see where it goes from there.

(One of them was that the kingdom Arthur is from is already in Hell, but humans refuse to believe it... this is why he can always just WALK to Satan's castle in every game. Also it takes place in the same universe as Devil May Cry)

I'm wondering, how many of you are interested in seeing the timeline for my story so far? While it is primarily a Raiden story, events/references to other shmups as well as a few non-shmup games will be present. This does not mean my story is a crossover, but you will see how the separate events from different games intertwine to form the main plot. I really like how the timeline events fit together to create the story, I think I have created a rather interesting story, if I do say so myself.

Raiden Fanfiction Timeline (Work In Progress)

1908: Tunguska Event; Chimeran Virus arrives on Earth on Tunguska meteor, Russian quarantine successfully prevents infectious outbreaks, and a cure is developed. The wreckage of a crashed alien ship is also found a few days after impact, all those aboard were found dead. The Russian government hands over the dead aliens to U.S. government scientists for research after a deal is made.
1914: The Great War begins. The US develops Project Flying Shark, in which faster, more powerful biplane fighters are being developed for combat. A new type of bomb is developed for these fighters, which has the ability to destroy incoming enemy fire and protect the plane.
1918: World War I ends
1920s: United States goes through Great Depression
1930s: Nazi party takes power in Germany
1939: Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany invades Poland, signaling the start of World War II. England and France declare war on Germany.
1941: Japan attacks U.S. Naval fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, drawing the United States into the conflict.
1945: U.S. B-29 bombers drop first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing Japan to surrender. World War II comes to an end.
September 1945: A terrorist organization known as CANY rises to power. They occupy several areas in Europe, using several new weapons that combine mecha technology with current military technology. Unknown to the public, the governments of the United States, England, Germany, and Japan secretly come together to form a team of fighter pilots called "Strikers". The 2 US pilots are women who fly the P-51 Mustang and the P-38 Lightning, the British pilot is a woman who flies the Spitfire, the German pilot is a woman who fliez the Messerschmitt BF-109, and there are also 2 Japanese pilots, a woman who pilots the Mitsubishi Zero and a man who flies the Kyushu J7W Shinden. The planes have been upgraded, using captured CANY weaponry, including laser guns and plasma missiles, as well allowing each pilot to have 4 small jet powered unmanned wingmen assisting them. The Strikers team engages and destroys CANY forces and major weapons across Europe. The aircraft are then upgraded even more and with the aid of rocket boosters, they launch into the stratosphere, and engage in battle with what appeared to be an alien satellite in low Earth orbit. After a few days, the Strikers reach the Moon, where they successfully destroy a massive underground base hidden on the dark side of the Moon. During the battle, they encountered several crab-like alien enemies and advanced fighter ships. They also managed to pursue a small rocket that attempted to escape the Moon. After destroying it, they engaged in a fierce battle with what appeared to be a small star made of powerful energy, which morphed into a huge alien crab. After killing the alien, the Strikers team returned to Earth to piece together the truth. It turned out that CANY was being controlled by the alien beings all along. This entire incident was kept under a low profile from the public eye, but more and more people became suspicious and began to question the existence of extraterrestrial life.
Late 1945: After the CANY incident, the Strikers team was disbanded. However, a few weeks later, the remnants of CANY were absorbed into what came to be known as F.G.R. After witnessing increased military buildups, the Strikers team is called back into service, but with a few lineup and aircraft changes. After destroying a majority of FGR forces and weapons, the Strikers infiltrate a secret weapons facility buried deep beneath the jungles of South America. Deep within the Earth they engage in battle with a massive, mutated, purple alien, which once again, was in control of the FGR forces. After killing it, they return home and are debriefed by their commanders. The military and scientists struggle to understand what were the reasons for these alien attacks. The public is now highly concerned about the existence of alien life. The Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union begins shortly after.
1950: Korean War begins
1953: Korean war ends with a cease-fire, both sides are more or less where they began
December 1956: Vietnam War begins
1960s: Space race between US and Soviet Union. Rocket technology from CANY and FGR alien weapons is reverse engineered to build the first space rockets.
1969: US successfully completes first manned mission to the Moon. Wreckage of a fighter craft of alien origin is found. A few high tech computers are salvaged and brought back to Earth. Scientists discover that they were used for extremely long distance communication between ships in space, but they are unable to decipher the alien language.
1973: The US Army develops Project Ashura/Twin Cobra, in which they upgraded some of their attack helicopters with secret alien weapon technology from the CANY incident. These new weapons included several different types of laser/energy cannons. Despite the advanced weaponry, they are unable to deal with the guerrilla tactics of North Vietnam. Vietnam War ends in a defeat of the US, Communist North Vietnam takes South Vietnam and the country is unified into 1 entirely communist country.
1990: Iraq invades Kuwait, signaling the start of the Gulf War in the Middle East. A US-led coalition of 34 nations is formed to invade Iraq.
1991: Soviet Union collapses, signaling the end of the Cold War. Gulf War also ends.
1999: An interdimensional portal appears beneath Antarctica. Mechanized insect-like aliens break through the ice and launch a worldwide invasion. Their ability to copy and take the form of human military vehicles makes them an even greater threat. The US government alone reactivates the Striker program. 6 of the best military fighter pilots are chosen to fly the F/A-18 Super Hornet, F-117 Nighthawk, F-22 Raptor, F-4 Phantom, AV-8B Harrier, and X-36 Warlord into combat against the invaders. This time around, the Strikers have a bigger advantage; modern fighter jets. They also have a secret weapon: the X-36 Warlord, which was originally developed as a prototype recon plane, but now it has been completely modified with advanced weapons and the ability to transform into a mech robot that can deal devastating damage from energy attacks. The Strikers successfully attack and destroy many alien forces in locations around the world, including large aircraft, tanks, and ships that transformed into their true insect-like forms. After that, they engage alien forces that have captured the International Space Station in Earth's orbit, even destroying a captured human space shuttle in the process. The battle ended with the Strikers destroying some large mechanical insects that were originally disguised as satellites. Shortly after, they use a human built warp gate to enter an unknown region of the universe, where they battled swarms of small insects and destroyed a huge mechanical beetle. After the fight, they found themselves in the aliens' final base, where they battled their way through heavy defenses and came upon a gruesome discovery: a huge cocoon that was pulsing and breathing. The 6 pilots attacked it and in a flash of light, the alien leader, a giant wasp/moth called Chaos Queen burst out and opened fire with energy blasts and attacked with her claws. However, she was no match for the combined attacks of the pilots' jets and the robot mech's energy attacks. In one final effort, Chaos Queen's heart continued to attack the pilots even after her body was destroyed. However, the 6 pilots were victorious and they returned home through the warp gate. This time, however, all of furrykind was well aware of the existence of alien life. Rebuilding from the alien attacks did not take too long, as they did not cause major damage to the world's cities, oddly enough. It seemed as if they came here waiting for the arrival of something, or someone else.
September 11, 2001: Al-Qaeda terrorists hijack 4 commercial flights on the East Coast of the US. 2 of the planes hit the World Trade Center in New York City, causing both towers to collapse. After all flights across the US were grounded, US Air Force jets were scrambled, but arrived too late. Another plane hits the Pentagon. The final plane, which was bound for Washington DC, crashes in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board, after passengers attempted to retake the cockpit from the hijackers. 9/11 becomes known as the darkest day in American history when the worst terrorist attacks ever committed on US soil happened. More than 3,000 people died in the attacks.
2003: Iraq War begins. US and British forces invade Iraq, occupying it for the next 8 years.
December 2011: American forces withdraw from Iraq, bringing an end to the war.
2012: Damaged computer hard drive is found in a New York City alley. It was confirmed as originating from the crash of Flight United 93 into the World Trade Center 11 years before. The CIA manages to salvage some of the data, which refers to something about alien life and communication.
2013: Research continues on trying to decipher the alien language from the computers found on the Moon. Billions of dollars are put into an international program to help finish the task.
2014-2045: Years of relative peace and world stability.
2046: World economies collapse after budget spending finally catches up with governments. Debts from wars that happened in the early 2000s finally take their toll. Early symptoms of overpopulation begin to put strain on world resources. The world goes through a depression lasting 9 years.
2054: Nations collapsed into conflicts over the limited resources, signaling the start of World War III. Tensions in the Middle East finally broke out into full-blown chaos, and religious extremist groups carried out many horrific acts of terrorism, while several governments collapsed amongst the fighting. Conflicts spread throughout every corner of the globe, even to the shores of the East Coast of the United States, after a Russian terrorist group framed an undercover US CIA agent for participating in a bloody massacre at Moscow International Airport. Tensions snapped, and after an ultranationalist group in Russia gained complete control of the government, an invasion of the U.S. was launched, hitting the East Coast in a surprise attack after satellite communications were knocked out. Some of the largest ground battles took place in New York City, which was heavily devastated by cruise missiles from Russian warships in NY Harbor and attacks from high-altitude jet bombers, as well as areas in Virginia, Washington D.C., which was reduced to ruins, Atlanta, and Miami. However, the Russians were pushed back quickly by the combined efforts of the U.S. Army Rangers, Marines, National Guard, and Air Force, as well as a daring operation by a team of Navy SEALs that managed to infiltrate the massive Russian command submarine in New York Harbor, and turned its own weapons against their naval fleet. This turned the tide in favor of the U.S., and avoided a disaster because the massive submarine was carrying enough nuclear warheads to reduce the entire East Coast to ruins. Shortly after, satellite communications were clearly restored, allowing U.S. pilots to regain air dominance in the skies over New York. The capital was then retaken quickly, and the Russians suffered a huge loss. Meanwhile, a group called Prophets of Mobius emerged from the shadows of the chaos of war. They began massive production of very advanced weaponry and vehicles, which they sold to all sides of any conflict, whoever was willing to buy. The huge profits allowed them to form a huge private army of well-equipped mercenary soldiers, which they deployed to every conflict around the world, overpowering other forces and heartlessly committing massacres of innocent civilians everywhere. It was during this particularly bloody phase of WWIII that the United Nations decided that it could no longer stand by and watch the horrors unfold. Peaceful diplomatic solutions and attempts to negotiate with the Prophets of Mobius had failed, so for the first time in history, the UN took military action. CIA agents had succesfully captured 2 different prototype models of new 2-seat fighter jets that were being developed by the Prophets. These fighters were being developed as part of a group of terrifying superweapons designed to bring the world to its knees. So, the UN formed a team of 4 of the best fighter pilots from 4 different countries. At the time, this mission was a secret, and the pilots' names were never revealed, although they were the 4 heroes who brought peace to the world, but at the cost of their lives. They knew it was a suicide mission, but they carried it out, knowing that there might be a glimpse of hope in the future because of them. According to the reports, they fought against overwhelming odds, and made their way to the Prophets' headquarters, a massive facility that was built on top of the ruins of Shanghai, China. They managed to survive an overwhelming onslaught from everything the Prophets threw at them, swarms of the production models of their fighter planes, helicopters, anti-aircraft artillery, massive tanks the size of football stadiums and 5 stories tall, drone fighters, huge aerial gunships, and heavily armed mechanized robot suits piloted by soldiers. After proceeding deeper into the mountains through a huge underground tunnel, the pilots found themselves in a massive underground launch base, and this is where rumors and legends merge with facts. We may never know what horrors they faced during their final battle, but legends say that the Prophets' ultimate superweapon was something straight from the blackest of nightmares; rumored to be an impossible combination between a demon and a prototype mobile flying fortress/ship that could deliver a nuclear strike to any location in the world at extreme ranges, as well as harnessing a black, evil energy that could possess and manipulate the minds of its targets, and also causing inhuman, unbearable torture and pain. The Prophets of Mobius were destroyed by the actions of those 4 pilots, and all evidence of the legendary demonic weapon was buried deep underground when the mountains collapsed on top of the launch base, burying the remains of the pilots and their planes as well. This marked the end of World War III.
2058: WWIII ends. The world slowly rebuilds from the massive devastation. The United Nations and the CIA launch an investigation into the final battle of the 4 pilots and what they fought against. It was revealed from captured Prophets of Mobius scientists and leaders, and blueprints that the "demon" was in fact a demon, but of alien origin. Unusually, it had DNA very similar to that of a wolf. Further investigation revealed that the alien had been found alive in the wreckage of a ship that crashed in the remote wastelands of Siberia. Data found on the ship's navigation system revealed that the single alien ship was supposed to arrive on Earth and observe furrykind for a future invasion of some kind. Strangely, the alien language was easily cracked because it was similar to Earth's languages. However, very little information was recovered. It said they were called "Raiwat", and it mentioned something about "ZODIAC Devices", and some dates that were 200-300 years in the future. This information was kept a tight secret from the public, to prevent mass panic, only top government leaders knew the truth.
2059: Governments from every country come together and develop Project Alltynex, which is not set to begin until the year 2185 AD. It involves the construction of a massive supercomputer deep underground that will control the world's military unmanned drone forces to defend against any alien threats.
2070: Kate Adelphia is born in the Great Lakes area somewhere in Ohio, United States.
2071: Alex Blackburn is born in Los Angeles, California.
2072: Angel Ramirez is born
2073: Krystal Lightfoot is born
2088: Kate Adelphia successfully completes fighter pilot training, and is assigned to serve in a United Nations squadron based in England.
2089: Alex Blackburn successfully completes fighter pilot training. He is assigned to a squadron based in Edwards Air Force Base, California, serving with the USAF.
July 2090: A massive meteor shower, known as the Ulysses Planetfall takes place. It was seen from both sides of the Pacific Ocean. Unusually powerful sonic booms cause light damage to structures along the coastlines. Oddly enough, not a single meteor hits land, all of them impact the ocean. Incident happens at Santa Monica Pier in California; sonic boom causes news helicopter to crash into pier, killing and injuring several.
August 2090: Airborne virus that was brought in the meteors infected and killed millions. The virus circled the planet in the air currents. Symptoms of the infection included open sores growing on the body and the pupils of the eyes turning a blood red color. The infected displayed zombie-like behavior and at night would whisper disturbing stories and warnings that the end was near. Entire areas of Australia, Asia, North America, Central America, South America, Africa, and Europe were quarantined by the military and disease prevention organizations. Over time, the viral outbreak faded due to the development of a cure, but it did not vanish completely. Certain individuals who were infected were captured by the government and researched scientifically. It was found that the infected developed the ability to use telepathy to communicate and they also gained slight psychic abilities.
August 2090: A flight of 3 US Navy fighter jets makes contact with an unknown aircraft
over the Gulf of Mexico. As soon as contact is made, their radar is disabled. They manage to follow the unknown aircraft to the Chixculub Crater on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The unknown craft opens fire on the jets, engaging them in a dogfight. One of the Navy pilots gets a closer look at the unknown aircraft and
sees that it does not look like any Earth-made plane. It has jet black and purple armor, with a small red diamond-shaped crystal behind the cockpit that constantly keeps blinking with a flashing red light. After a fierce battle, one of the Navy jets manages to damage one of the aircraft's engines, and it crashes in a jungle area near the Chixculub crater. Military forces capture the downed alien craft, however the pilot was killed during the crash. The wreckage of the ship and the alien corpse are taken to Area 51 in the US to be studied. Studies reveal that the crystal on top of the ship was made of the same material recovered from a meteor during the Ulysses Planetfall. The alien is found to be similar in nature to dogs and wolves, but it cannot breathe oxygen like Earth-dwellers. Information found onboard the ship's computer shows that it came from the same region of space where the Ulysses meteors originated. This type of alien later came to be known as a Cranassian. Although the ship was armed, it was discovered that its mission was to scout the Earth and observe military strategies to prepare the way for a coming invasion. After realizing this, world government leaders realized the terrible situation Earth was in. Massive military buildups were immediately put into action.
September 2090: Space watching organizations are on full alert for any signs of unusual space activity.
October 2090: Meteor storm of asteroid fragments impacts the Earth in several locations. Satellite communications are temporarily disabled from an unusual EMP blast. First wave of Cranassian aircraft use the satellite blackout and meteor storm as cover to enter Earth's atmosphere. Large airborne carriers launch waves of fighters and attack aircraft against the West Coast of the United States. After the first attacks, transport ships deliver alien infantry, tanks, and armored vehicles to the front lines. Los Angeles is one of the first cities to be hit hard. US military forces manage to coordinate a defense effort to hold the line as aircraft attempt to evacuate civilians away from the fighting, further inland. However, many retreating aircraft are shot down, killing many civilians, and leaving others stranded behind enemy lines. Meanwhile, at Edwards Air Force Base, an alert is sounded to scramble fighters. Alex Blackburn is amongst the pilots who are sitting in their planes, engines off, when the order to scramble is given. He pilots the F-24X. After his first combat sortie of this war, he manages to get a few kills. US military aircraft fight back desperately against overwhelming odds, but are clearly no match for the advanced Cranassian technology. The fighter pilot casualty rate continues to climb rapidly. The United States Air Force decides that in order to prevent huge numbers of casualties, they need to develop a new fighter capable of matching the Cranassians in power. Subsequent Cranassian attacks follow, striking major cities around the globe. This marks the beginning of the first phase of the Cranassian War.
November 2090: The U.S. Air Force and the U.S. government create "Project Divine Thunder". The wreckage from a crashed Cranassian fighter is reverse engineered and its power crystal and technology are used to develop a new super-fighter called the Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter. Two original aircraft are produced, a red and a blue "Beta" version. The jet is equipped with several Vulcan cannons that offer a wide spread, a very powerful blue piercing laser, high-damage unguided missiles, fast-firing homing missiles, and it can also carry a payload of 7 small thermonuclear bombs. A massive airborne aircraft carrier, called the Vengeance, is also built and deployed for service with the USAF. One of the U.N.'s top pilots; Kate Adelphia is chosen to pilot the red Raiden jet. Alex Blackburn, chosen because he demonstrated top skills in combat, is assigned to pilot the blue Raiden jet. They are both transferred from service at their respective bases and reassigned for service onboard the Vengeance.

Note: I am still fine-tuning details here and there, so bear with me if things seem ridiculously exaggerated or out of place. Also, see how many references to other games and shmups you can find.

Thanks!, I hope to get this done within the next year, and also try and see which shmups and games I've referenced so far. Some are obvious, others are not really. The reference to Alltynex should kind of give you a hint where the timeline is headed in the future and how different events from different games flow together. It's not a crossover between games, all of the events happened in the same timeline in the same universe.

Yeah, I chose the furry characters because I just really like foxes, and such I'll try to make it as realistic as I can (military-wise) without making it boring. Of course there will be futuristic sci-fi weapons/aircraft and stuff though.

You make an excellent point there, but it's kind of flawed, because only the Raiden aircraft are those outstanding colors. There are also other military vehicles and aircraft that will be your standard camouflaged colors. Great idea though.

This pic wasn't necessarily drawn for the story, but it was for some in-class project for math that I did my senior year of high school. But since it's Raiden, I'd figure I would just post it here. You can clearly tell the difference; I drew the crappy one, and the main character art is being done by a friend.
