Probably wont get next gen until the consoles are under £200, we're on a slim or superslim iteration that has the manufacturing kinks worked out, and there is a large enough library of games for some gems to shine through. So take my opinion with a pinch of salt as it has two years to change as the market stabilises.

I'm in favour of PS4 instead of Xbox one. Never been a fan of the kinect, always been a fan of the move. Ideal controller for lightgun games, and it's not bundled so people who don't like lightgun games (read, most people) don't have to buy it.

That's about the only differentiator. I have a feeling this gen isn't really marketed at me, as I don't like:
  • Social crap
  • Online multiplayer
  • TV/film/game streaming
  • Trophies
  • Updates
  • Any 'added value' feature not already explicitly mentioned (granted, bluray playback is fine)
  • Most modern games (I follow series I like that started generations ago, and try new games if they have a chance of being good <which they rarely do>)

In defense of the wii-u, the discs have round edges which feel great :P (BTW I have no wii-u console, I bought the game as I'm collecting a series).

You know... As much as I slag off the Wii U, I would consider buying it when it drops to £150 (during sales or whatever). I can see that happening in Spring 2014. By which time, Mario Kart will be out.

But Xmas 2014 is when the Wii U will truly hit bargain basement prices. Which is also the time when I'll be picking up a PS4 for sure.

My 3DS XL is on its way today, but since I won't be home, I'll just pick it up tomorrow.

Edit: My postman just dropped off my 3DS XL.

Will give it a crack tonight/tomorrow as am out for the rest of today.

From a hardware perspective, and especially in comparison to the Vita, the 3DS is certainly retarded. But alas, it has the userbase, which means it has better third party support. Having said that also, it's surprising as to how little of the 3DS library actually appeals to me.

My £130 purchase does have Mario Kart bundled in, and Nintendo's promotion means I'll be getting Mario 3D Land for free. So I think I'm getting a bit of a bargain. But even then, and if not for the new Zelda and Kokuga (downloadable) games, the 3DS has very little going for it that appeals to my sensibilities. I know Bravely Default is coming out, and Tales of Abyss is also meant to be amazing (albeit a poor port), but these two RPG games still pale in their attraction for me when going up against Ys Celceta and Persona 4 Golden on Vita. And I haven't even talked about the FF X/X-2 HD release.

I haven't opened my 3DS yet, and due to Distance Selling Regulations, still have a few days to decide whether I want to keep it, but Sony's handheld is infinitely more attractive when it comes to hardware and software. Just the unified PSN account system alone makes my Vita more appealing.

Funny you mention Persona 4 on the Vita (*yawn*) but don't mention all the love the 3DS has gotten from Atlus. Pick up a copy of SMT4 and stop worrying about the thin library. I wish there was more too, but the 3DS does have a handful of good to great titles.

If you don't want one I'm confused as to why you bought one? And the hardware assessment before you've taken it out of the box is equally unusual.

Mario 3D Land, in terms of purity and craftsmanship, is better than all the games on the Vita. That happens to be a fact. Whether or not it appeals to your sensibilities is another matter entirely, however.

Personally I don't think there's a great deal on the 3DS to absolutely recommend one unless you're a Zelda die-hard, and Kokuga is definitely not as good as I first thought - gets tired very quickly. It seems you're into JRPG's and Final Fantasy, which does an amazing job of boring me to tears at the very mention of the name, so the 3DS library may not be your thing unless, as cmoon pointed out, you dig Atlus's rather excellent offerings.

The choice is yours buddy, to open or not to open!

Don't get me wrong: I liked the 3DS quite a lot when it launched, but have found myself being spoilt by the resolution of smartphones and the Vita screen. I'm also not really a fan of 3D if it means less graphically impressive games due to the 3D processing/rendering.

I can't talk about SMT as I live in the UK, and therefore have to suffer its unavailability due to region locking.

Mario may be "factually" the better game, and I won't deny that it does have a certain charm which I will miss if I return my 3DS, but the main attraction for me (aside from Mario Kart and Mario 3D Land) is Zelda. I therefore think that I might therefore find it difficult to find value from my (bargain) purchase.

And yes, I have heard Kokuga is disappointing.

I guess some people are attracted to Nintendo games (like my friend who swears by his 3DS). I'm personally rather more attracted to RPGs (even though I never play them due to time constraints). So for me, I love my PSP/Vita (due to PS1 Classics being available via PSN) as they both happen to be RPG powerhouses.

Did you buy a 3DS or a 3DS XL?

If it's the former send that shit back right now. The 3DS looks ten times better. The screen is huge, the resolution difference is so marginal it's barely noticeable, and the 3D effect is several times more effective and easy on the eyes. I'd say it's rather special, to be honest.

But not on the original model. It's like a little 3D postage stamp.

Kid Icarus was probably more graphically impressive than Gravity Rush (and more fun) if you're in need of a direct graphical power comparison.

Wow, I forgot about that region locking. Someone needs to hack that shit fast! I know I wouldn't have bothered buying a 3DS if it wasn't for Atlus ensuring I'd get my money out of the console. If you never had a DS, there's a fairly rich library there--though the question remains how much got ported to the UK.

Enjoy it. Don't think of it as any different to the Vita, just new games and new visual gimmicks. I play with the 3D a notch down from the top, if it helps (screen is slightly crisper.)

The Move isn't ideal, but it works fine for HotD 4 and other arcade gun games. I was miffed that the GunCon 3 didn't get continued support after Time Crisis 4, though. That truly is the ideal gun game peripheral, at least for non-CRT displays.

It works fine on games where you have a machine gun negating the need for accuracy, or games where you have an on screen cursor turning the whole affair into a point and click adventure with a remote cutely shaped like a lolipop handgun.

The cursor drift absolutely ruins it for otherwise spectacular games like HotD Overkill, which is playable only because of the cursor. It's not accurate on Wii either actually, but at least there's no drift. The Move is great for stuff like RE5 (or at least comparable to the Wiimote) but both are worthless for rail shooters. Guncon 3 was certainly the best of the modern options, but has some lag that has to be accounted for as you play.

Yeah... I still prefer my iPhone 4s/Vita screen though. I find that tilting the screen whilst playing Mario Kart destroys the 3D effect. Great game by the way. Especially when going up against the world. I was consistently coming 2nd place last night... I guess you could say that I am pretty good at the game. Having never played it beforehand.

Back to the topic in question: I nearly panicked when Square-Enix announced that Final Fantasy 14 to be coming to PS4 in April. I thought they were referring to Final Fantasy 15. Glad MGS5 has also been delayed. Looks like Xmas 2014 is an appropriate time to pick up the console after all.

FFXIV:ARR is an actually good Final Fantasy game though. Great, even. Chances that FFXV will be one too are minimal.

Having spent more time with the PS4 I do not like the current video/screenshot upload options. I created a Twitter account last night, couldn't link it to the PS4 - just 'failed communication' despite at the browser level on the PS4, it was clear that the login was succeeding. This forced me to use Facebook, so I had to set up a FB account which I then set to as private and undiscoverable as I could. The uploads worked fine using this method, and I was able to download my screenshot from there. They need to update the firmware to allow copying of screenshots/videos to USB sticks ASAP, and they need to add Youtube support. Facebooks desire to force people to use their real names (several fake ones I tested were rejected) is completely at odds with the general gamers desire to sit behind a pseudonym.

I have a perfect example of why this is important - some time ago a class guide I wrote for Phantasy Star Universe greatly offended someone, to this day I still don't know why - may have been a religious nut as he was particularly upset by me calling it a bible (despite that being a common VGM word for encyclopedia). Anyway - he started stalking me online, attacking wherever he could, even paying other players in-game currency to do his dirty work for him. This carried on for quite a while and I can only imagine how much worse it would have been if my real name was available. Once someone knows it, they can start to post it and the great wheels of Google will reveal elements your personal / online trials and tribulations to people such as future employers. It's simply too dangerous.

So anyway, here's the screenshot I got by uploading it via Facebook, AC4 really is awesome:

Ah, but that Tetuya Nomura guy is directing FF XV. And he did Kingdom Hearts (which I haven't played). As well as FF: Advent Children (which I absolutely adored - if only for the battle scenes). I'm buying FF XV for the CGI cutscenes alone. So much epic fight scenes right there...

IGN puts the true story out:
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/12/03/ ... ack-friday

Wait a moment. Now read this:
http://techland.time.com/2013/12/02/did ... day-sales/

It's funny, but after I saw the original headline I thought "surely there's going to be some cherry-picking at the Forum about whether this is true or not." Goes to show what you get when you expect "professionals" writing for influential sites to pay closer attention than your friendly local forum-goers.
