STGs with stories
STGs with stories
What are the STGs with stories? The only two I know of are:
Philosoma and Xyanide.
Philosoma and Xyanide.
Re: STGs with stories
The Alltynex Trilogy. Not only detailed stories, but good stories to boot. And the way the narrative is conveyed through gameplay is something I would very much like to see in other shmups.

Radiant Silvergun- the fact it's a psuedo-RPG/Shmup hybrid probley helps too.
The entire TF series- IV and V are possibly the most directly connected.
Mars Matrix- One could almost call this Takumi's one shot at a RSG wannabe, save for a lack of cutscenes and fewer weapons(though I see the "black hole" weapon as a stand in for the Radiant Sword). Though the story its self kinda drops the ball with the end stages, unlike RSG.
Chaos Field- Mostly in the manuel, but it's still there. Three pilots vs plane jumping comisc horrors.
Tyrian 2000- One lone planet miner caught in the middle of a conflict between against one evil ass corporation named MicroSol who has their sights set on glactic domination. Pretty sure that had to be an intentional jab at Microsoft back in the day.
Hellsinker- Pretty deep and grim, but goodluck actually making sense of it.
Gigawing series.

Re: STGs with stories
Tons of shooters have stories. The only big chunk of story-less shmups is classic Toaplan. And maybe Triangle Service, or at least, I'm not aware of their games having a story.
Next question: what are the STGs with space ships? (I only know Blast Off and StarHawk)

Re: STGs with stories
Wat? Have you played them? Kamui has short intro and ending sequences and RefleX goes as far as having pages of text before the final stage. Sure, most of the details are on the metaphorical manual, but the Tale is told throughout the three games through recurring characters, locations and music, with importance greater than "hey, let's throw in a nod to the previous game". Individually, each game conveys, maybe not a story, but a narrative, through the progression of stages, in pretty much the way RayForce did. The one which does it best is RefleX. Even if you have no idea what is going on in the war and the place of the game in the trilogy, you can understand the conflict between the three factions from the events in the game.Lawfer wrote:Wat? Besides, probably every shmup has a story of some sort. It's just that here it has more bearing in the game than "scroll up and shoot stuff in different places".

I came in here to say Rayforce, but Pedro kinda mentioned it.
But yeah, Rayforce is really good in this regard.
R-Type is great too, lore and atmosphere in that series is pretty good.

Sorta off topic, but I've been meaning to ask, what does STG stand for?

Also, Cave games do have stories. I like the plot of Ketsui and the Mushihimesama games.

Like Philosoma or Xyanide? I doubt it. I am talking about stories incorporated in-game, not like Shadow of the Beast where there is a story in the manual, but nothing of the sort in the game.KAI wrote:99% of the shmups out there have stories.

Depends on what you mean by incorporated into the game. A lot of games provide a pretty good story just with art and music combined to create atmosphere, or through subtle hints.Lawfer wrote:Like Philosoma or Xyanide? I doubt it. Jamestown has a story, about Steampunk ships travelling to Mars, or ..... something.
It's kind of hard to follow.

Re: STGs with stories
Twilight Insanity and Twilight Refrain both have dialogue before bosses and between stages where you have to choose between different responses. You have to figure out the mystery yourself before you're allowed access to the true final stage.

Re: STGs with stories
What's fun is the shmups with story I don't usually care for it, the ones with little story I can't get enough and try to get as much juice out of them as possible, devs who make understated settings for their games usually know what they're doing.

Ketsui's story is great. It has an interesting World War III scenario that would perhaps make an interesting movie.
