Waka Playstation upscaler - anyone ever used one ?
I'm currently playing with a freshly purchased Waka linedoubler. That the little grey one, officially licensed for the PS1 back in the days. It performs extremely nice with low-res RGB signals, but it has a hard wired Playstation Multi-Out RGB connector. So I was thinking about building a little Scart adapter - similar to what people did for the PSOne LCD screen.
Probably a far shot, but I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with this unit ? For example I'm wondering about a neccessary switching voltage to wake the unit up from standby.

Neat. How does it compare to the XRGB2 picture quality wise ? I take it it's pretty much lagless if it's only a linedoubler.

I have to wait for parts to build that Scart input adapter. Review's coming after that.
The Waka has no settings whatsoever, so the sampling frequency for the input signal is fixed, while it's flexible on the XRGB. With 720x240p or 720x480i from a PS2 you get 720x480p on the XRGB, while you get 640x480p on the Waka. Most TVs will do the same and only sample the XRGB's output with 640 pixels on the horizontal.... Will be interesting to see how the Waka handles resolutions with less than 320 pixels in width.
with PS1 240p games brilliantly. Same quality, but with 100% perfectly stable picture. 480i is quite nice as well, uses a slightly different line offset than the XRGB which makes the picture a bit calmer, minimizing the tremble on horizontal lines you get with single field interlacing. How does it compare to the XRGB2 picture quality wise ?
oh yes.I take it it's pretty much lagless if it's only a linedoubler.

You could make something sort of like this:Fudoh wrote:So I was thinking about building a little Scart adapter - similar to what people did for the PSOne LCD screen.

Just make sure that the +5VDC is connected or even needs to be connected and you should be good!

I wonder how it will perform, or even work, with systems like the Neo Geo with slightly off refresh-rates.

that was the plan. Waiting for a GunCon adapter right now.You could make something sort of like this:
beeing a straight linedoubler I don't think this might cause any problems.I wonder how it will perform, or even work, with systems like the Neo Geo with slightly off refresh-rates.

Re: Waka Playstation upscaler - anyone ever used one ?
I've been looking for a simple linedoubler for the 240p material and after browsing some random japanese websites with screenshot comparisons (http://compactsaloon.web.fc2.com/TV.html) I decided to take the plunge
I bought one along with the SCPH-1160 for the scart input mod, too. I'll post my impressions when I receive it.
PS I found pictures that suggest the Waka does work with other systems, because otherwise this mod would make little sense - http://art8.photozou.jp/pub/213/165213/ ... 778786.jpg

eventually it will come down to the question if it can stand up against a XRGB-2. Very much looking forward to your impressions as well.PS I found pictures that suggest the Waka does work with other systems

Re: Waka Playstation upscaler - anyone ever used one ?

But unfortuantely no luck with it. I built a JP21 to "Sony" adapter today, confirmed that it's working fine by using the same source (PS1/2) with it's own RGB cable. Works nice - same quality as directly connected. With other sources I didn't have any luck. Tried MD, Famicom, SFC and N64 so far. Picture shows up, but the vertical sync is completely off. Kinda like when totally screwing up the NTSC dot clock setting on the XRGB.
@RGB: this picture with the Waka with the replaced connector. Is there a website going with that ? Any infos there ?

I finally got to test my unit, but I think it's broken or doesn't like my PAL PS2 playing NTSC games. Every second line of pixels is shifted :/

A PAL PS2 runs NTSC PS1 games at a slightly different refresh-rate
It's not a problem on most TVs but it's enough to cause scroll-stutter on the XRGB-mini and could be what's causing that too.

Alright, thank you for explanation, that's a relief. I guess I need to hunt down an NTSC PSX unit.

Re: Waka Playstation upscaler - anyone ever used one ?
Did you try both PS1 and PS2 games ?
I only have NTSC systems on hand, but the previous owner of mine, had a PAL PS2 and I think he said that at least PS2 games were ok in his setup (but PS1 games didn't work properly).
Maybe it's just the color carrier which causes problems. If you exchange your FBAS and Luminance pins on the PS2 output it might be alright.

I've got one of those. I played with it once or twice when I got it years ago. It's buried somewhere in storage with other similar gear though.

I tried a few PS2 NTSC games on my PAL console and unfortunately the picture was shaky. Slightly better than the PSX games, but still unplayable.
I'll try this when I get more time.Maybe it's just the color carrier which causes problems. If you exchange your FBAS and Luminance pins on the PS2 output it might be alright.
