WOOO

This game doesn't have stages, newb

192,640 - Ed Oscuro - 30%

Oh yeaaah look at me not getting the default hiscore

Some other random thoughts:

The game apparently uses a random generated seed to determine how many orbs you usually get in the game. For example, if you put down a save at the beginning of the game and there's one orb or a bonus, there's always going to be one orb and a bonus. Thus, if there's two orbs at the beginning of the game there always will be.

I'm not sure how useful a cheat this would be as it seems that the final orb always appears before the gray UFOs come out of the bottom corners of the screen diagonally, and the game's still really easy at that point.

Additionally, sometimes four orbs get generated all at once, which is nice because you can start collecting only bonuses faster. I haven't seen it happen with bonuses, I think only one ever comes out at a time.

First boss gets bwned by putton bushing easier than many other Toaplan first bosses. It's the third boss (or maybe that's second - it's the one at the 30% mark, where I died) that scares me.

This game gets tough in a hurry!

Also, that's a bomb right at the UFOs, my bad. And yeah, the four orbs are also generated from a seed, so it's possible to drop a savestate right there.

Good game, forgot to say thanks for reminding me about it earlier. :)

Edit: the game's strategy guide? :P

I'm sorry for the missing 1P and HI-SCORE at the top. At some point I had to leave in a hurry, so I used a savestate and continued from there when I got back. It messed up the screen when I did that.

Let me know if that disqualify me, but I'd rather not play this game again. It's torture :?

I have this game as a PCB, but I preferred playing on MAME to be able to use autofire. If that's not accepted for the scoreboard it's ok, I won't play this game again either way. :?

One of the few games I have looped where I wanted to walk away after the loop. :D Not a bad game, but the second loop barely seemed more challenging.

Just for the records: You guys are all playing with autofire, right? I just played it again in a sudden start of Toaplan fever and it seems fucking impossible w/out autofire!

Yea autofire is pretty much a given, especially with the older games.

I wonder if anyone has cleared it just by tapping the button back in the day. If yes this guy must be one hell of a Takahashi Meijin double.

Yes we multilooped it for 4 or 5 hours one day in the arcade, on a 2 Player game. We ran the fire buttons like on Track n'Field and never suffered any carpel tunnel fortunately.

Using ThunderMAME so the Toaplan games has sound/music.

The game doesn't get decent until round three.

644,940 - Ed Oscuro - 71% (Autofire ON/6)

Holeee shit, man. I wish I'd put recording on, because most of that was stuff I'd never seen before. I nearly wiped out around the 400K mark, but got two lives in rapid succession there. I ended up dying for good at the blue...circles, still don't know what they do, but now I know there's more rushing (homing!) enemies to watch out for there.

I have split feelings about this one now. I tried a few plays with autofire off (I have it set to a rate of 6, but that's still plenty fast to speedkill many things) and there's no comparison in the difficulty. Many things which were difficult before are just laughable with it on. It is a shame that the powerup attack is useless (but there's always Hellfire). There's no inbetween with this one - either you're abusing the fire rate and not getting the "FULL SHMUP" experience, or you're getting carpal tunnel syndrome and still getting your ass handed back.

On the plus side, there's some really cool things in here, like the tearing-away tiles and the gravity (wind?) boss - I didn't die once there, but that was pretty impressive, even given how easy it was to figure out what to do. On the other hand, I get caught up by some things which I shouldn't be - some big bosses go down without a fight, while random homing popcorn kills me. It is also pretty laughable how many enemies just waltz onscreen with no backup to be picked off in orderly fashion - even without autofire, every "pair" wave of enemies (all three of them), where popcorn comes onto the screen from both sides, was killed by simply parking in the dead middle of the screen with the max powerup level. On a related note, nice Centipede reference in there! The area percentage also suggests there's not much more until the loop, which is also a shame. Fastest Toaplan loop ever, if that's true; I swear the average Tatsujin-Ou level is half as long as my entire play time here. It's a nice change of pace from Tatsujin at least. Overall, I'm surprised by how little memorization was needed once I got past the typical Tatsujin stuff near the opening.

Does the game get harder for 2P?

Yeah, the game is ridiculously easy (and boring) with autofire, but a fun, good challenge without it.

This game is just ridiculous without autofire after a few loops. The enemies take way too many hits to kill. I can't get rid of them before they flood the screen in several spots, even when I'm fully powered up. :?
