Anyone have 1080p footage of the N64 with XRGB-mini
Hi, Does anyone have well-captured 1080p footage of an RGB modded N64 running through an XRGB-mini (without scanlines & upscaled to 1080p)?
Come to think of it, it would be an awesome resource to have a set of high quality 1080p videos from the XRGB-mini using various consoles with all the various settings for each console - only because buying one's quite a big purchase & it would be good to be able to preview it beforehand.

Usually with all the systems pre Gamecube era (that aren't 2-d) I'm assuming most people use 720p for the scanlines.andykara2003 wrote:Hi, Does anyone have well-captured 1080p footage of an RGB modded N64 running through an XRGB-mini (without scanlines & upscaled to 1080p)?

With the N64, some people prefer 1080p with no scanlines - but what I'm talking about is the having the possibility of basically being able to preview the XRGB mini across a wide range of settings and consoles before buying one - on your 50" screen in hi-def. It would be useful as it's a big purchase to make and I'm not sure how easy it would be to return it if you're not happy with the results.Smashbro29 wrote:Usually with all the systems pre Gamecube era (that aren't 2-d) I'm assuming most people use 720p for the scanlines.andykara2003 wrote:Hi, Does anyone have well-captured 1080p footage of an RGB modded N64 running through an XRGB-mini (without scanlines & upscaled to 1080p)?

Probably too much to ask though

Once I get my new capture card I'll take some video for you, should be here in a few days.andykara2003 wrote:With the N64, some people prefer 1080p with no scanlines - but what I'm talking about is the having the possibility of basically being able to preview the XRGB mini across a wide range of settings and consoles before buying one - on your 50" screen in hi-def. Wow thanks, much appreciated! I'm specifically interested in N64 so would it be OK to get some at 1080p and 720p both with and without scanlines?Smashbro29 wrote:Once I get my new capture card I'll take some video for you, should be here in a few days.

Small update on this, I needed a new part for my X-Capture 1 to function so this isn't gonna get done until Thursday-ish. Hope that's ok.

Here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82Yos3iF1cw
I just received my XCAPTURE-1 earlier and have been messing around with it and just happened to see your thread. I don't have a proper recording setup as I mostly just stream so here's what I could scrape up in the middle of the night with lack of sleep. Recorded with Videokeeper 2 and uploaded to YouTube directly. At least it's something until Smashbro29 gets his stuff up.
Edit: 1080p should be processed soon as of this post.

Here's my thoughts - tell me if I'm wrong about any of this, I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination..
1: To me, it looks like the N64 definitely needs scanlines as it looks too blocky without. I'd be really interested to see light, medium & dark scanlines on this game to see the varying effects.
2: I'm thinking that Youtube uses too much compression in their 1080p video (or any video), so you never get a true 1:1 view of exactly what the mini is putting out (I'm viewing it on my 46" plasma). I think the only way to view it properly would be from a properly encoded video file with minimal compression, uploaded using something like Dropbox (big file!).
3: There seems to be some 'chequered' interference in the picture. Just wondered where this came from - maybe in the capture process?
Cheers.

Regarding point #1: Scanlines will help, it looked better at 720p with the proper scanlines. A good example is Paper Mario as the sprites without scanlines look really blocky or have odd shapes on the black outline on the characters.
Regarding point #2: That much is true, YouTube compressed the crap out of everything. Videokeeper 2 recorded the clip at 20000kbps. I couldn't really check on YouTube probably because I was looking at it through HTML5, but it appeared the bitrate went down for sure. I'll see if I can dump it somewhere, the clip is over 500 megs. I did try a quick reencode last night before sleeping and it did reduce file size but overall picture went darker for some reason.
Regarding point #3: Could be cable, I've seen it happen on my SNES with a badly made cable. It didn't look as bad on my TV as it did with the capture. Potentially dithering, but I doubt it.

Nice one - I would happily download 500M if you can find somewhere to dump iteightbitminiboss wrote: I'm no expert either but here are my observations.

As to the cable, I bought an RGB cable from Console goods (supposed to be good) that gave this pattern. I ended up paying quite a bit for an official Gamecube cable that works with my mod which sorted it.

Smashbro29 - If it's not too late, would it be OK to capture light and medium scanlines on this game instead of non-scanlined as we've established that the N64 needs at least some scanline definition?

Re: Anyone have 1080p footage of the N64 with XRGB-mini
Thanks for doing this, eightbitminiboss. Does your N64 use an amp similar to the 7314DR from http://retrorgb.com/n64rgbmod.html, or did you build your own using transistors/resistors/capacitors?
I have an xrgb-mini, and I am considering doing the RGB mod on my stock N64.

I believe so. I only wired up 3 points inside my N64 and bought a SCART cable with the amp circuit built into the housing of the cable from retro-accessories when they had a website.CkRtech wrote:Thanks for doing this, eightbitminiboss. Edit: Perhaps I'll change it up later on down the line, apparently there's a fix to the cross-hatching seen in the capture according to mmmonkey that I apparently glossed over the first time I read the page.
