I think he means that the game is a bit unbalanced due to stage 3 being worth so much more in the long run than stage 1, 2 or 4 are. I disagree with his comments on stage 4, though, It's a tough stage to score in if you want big UFOs.

I thought he was complaining on how you don't graze stuff like random nonspells like Nazrin's, etc. Maybe I missed out something.

I have already said that shin's runs are shin's runs because he grazes everything. His runs are much more optimized than most of the 2nd places already. But what chum says is better summarized. Stage 3 is unbalanced as fuck. It's also so out of place. It makes sense for later stages to be worth a lot, but stage 3?

I can see how UFO stage 4 is hard to score in on higher difficulties. During the spam section near the end, you still have to pick up the right UFOs and all, but on normal? I can only assume, but for an experienced player, picking up those tokens shouldn't be as bad. Unless you are referring to something else.

QFT. E-Splice's Lunatic SanaeB record is really impressive, but I can't watch it again by how sloppy it looks compared to shin's runs. Which is why I still wait for him to score Sanae Lunatic, but he hasn't done that yet.

Shin said he doesn't like Sanae's movementspeed. He liked fatser and slower, and bothered with Sanae for lower difficulties, but it doesn't seem like he cares to do it on lunatic. Personally, I am waiting for a run in which fully grazes ichirin's last nonspell on lunatic like he did with the ReimuB hard run. That was so insane. I want him to break 3.3b with MarisaA or some shit. maybe 3.4b is possible if he actually did manage the full graze on that.

So we gotta put our faith on E-Splice. He has a great potential, despite being so behind shin. Btw, does SanaeB still have higher scoring potential than MarisaA on Lunatic? I'd assume so, but I can't be sure. I also miss HECATE, his 2.9b SanaeB was really cool but had some outdated route, and he did break 3b but never released the replay.

New DDC Normal WR by LYX: 1,561,356,410

Sounds nearly optimal, which is boring.

+1. I'm used to play mostly on Normal for serious, Hard to train and Easy whenever I want a shitty clear to boost my ego, rarely ever touching Lunatic. SSL week 3 taught me how to appreciate the subtle pleasures of being smashed on stage 1 though.

So, could somebody give me a good explanation of general scoring in Touhou? I've only played for score very casually at best so far.

Does it all really come down to grazing? And doesn't that make it a little random with the prominence of rng heavy patterns every now and than? Or do those not make a big enough difference in score over all?

There is no "general" Touhou scoring advice. Every game has different scoring mechanics.

They almost all share grazing though as a scoring mechanic right? (except Mountain of Faith I think)

Is grazing really the most important part of scoring in Touhou?

Grazing has different importance at different parts of different games. In PCB, graze is mostly only important while you have a border up. In IN, graze is mostly only important during spellcards. As you pointed out, graze does absolutely nothing in MoF at all.

I've only worked on IN scoring myself, but in that game, I would probably say that cancelling bullets and PoCing correctly in stage 6 are more important than doing all of the supergrazes. Mostly because you get a lot of points from stage 6 due to the system, and because bullet cancelling is harder than most of the supergrazes imo. It's hard to really establish a hierarchy of importance in that game though due to the way time affects point item value and point items affect time orb value.

Go for it, chum.

@Squire Grooktook

As yorgje already said, it has different importance in each game. MoF definitely has the simplest mechanics, so maybe that's where you want to start, if you wanna get into Touhou scoring. SA is also very simple. The downside for both games is that dying (for SA easy-hard, you suicide on lunatic) at all wrecks your score completely. Both PCB and IN are bad games to start scoring in; at least if you just want to look into the games, see what suits you. I think they may put you off because they're complicated, have a lot of things you need to keep in mind etc. PCB in particular has complex routes and balls' hard execution and I wouldn't dare try seriously scoring it right now, regardless of difficulty (and I say that as someone who's got several LNBs, and a handful of decent scores in other games). Of course there is nothing stopping you if you want a real challenge. PCB is also the coolest looking (imo) when you have a good run. Next to IN Youmu solo (which is similarly hard as PCB, actually).

But as I already said, I recommend either MoF or SA as starting point. Both have decent systems that are easy to understand, and at least SA routes aren't very hard to remember. (I never tried MoF, so I don't know). You could also try EoSD, but that's balls to the walls due to it having you finish with no resources (on normal+ at least. I have no idea about easy. Chum could probably say a thing or two about EoSD.) Don't play TD or DDC. They're dumb as shit. Everyone agrees.

------------------

i think I will get my run rather soon. Some more practice on stage 4 and 5, and I should be good. I'm getting a lot more runs past stage 3 than I did half a week ago. if I play enough, I might get it this week. Next week at worst, I think. Unless I start scrubbing it up massively and hardly play at all. I look forward to the first run that makes it to stage 5. Fucking BoWaP fucking me up every time so far. What a big bully. I get the safespot so consistently in practice. I don't understand it. It's not any different.
