Commodore Amiga Shooter for PC, Mac, AmigaOS + FREE DEMO

Post by TorbenLarsen »

Hi everyone,

Got a fresh press release about an oldie and goodie of an Amiga retro shooter, that I wanted to share with you all. :D

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cope-Com development team are proud to announce that through further collaboration with our partners GoldenCode and Seal Of Action Publishing you can now play our famed classic Amiga shooter on your desktop.

Please see the following links and also download a Free Demo on PC Windows, Mac OS X and AmigaOS 4.X:

Battle Squadron was originally developed by Cope-Com for the Commodore Amiga Home Computer in 1989 and received numerous awards making it an instant Amiga Classic. In 2011 Cope-Com released Battle Squadron for iOS mobile devices, and in 2012 for Android with our partner GoldenCode.eu.
We are now happy to announce that together with our partner GoldenCode.eu we are returning to the Amiga… making Battle Squadron available on Amiga OS 4.X, in addition to Mac and PC. Battle Squadron is available through both digital download and a pre-order special collectors edition with the signatures from the original developers and the coder making it possible to return to Amiga OS 4.X.
The collectors edition contains all desktop versions: Amiga OS 4.X, Mac, and PC. The new desktop version is an exact replica of the original famed Amiga game, just as it was for iOS and Android. In addition, the desktop version has great new features… still matching the original retro style.

Cheers

Nice enough demo. Couple of remarks, though:

- It would be nice if it was possible to use a USB gamepad.

- The cheap-o looks of the menus and the "intro" sequence clash horribly with the polish of the original pixel art. I'd try to make the former match the latter.

- Where's the options menu from the original Amiga version? Being able to tweak the gameplay by changing bullet speed and intensity seperately was one of the best features of the original version.

I knew an Amiga shooter would have Herr Schatten in on the first post!

I'll certainly check this out, but a shame to hear it can't be player with a USB input.

Memories. Probably the first vertical STG I seriously played.
Is there a scanline option?

yes there is both USB joystick support AND a scanline option. The way USB support is setup, it would support a huge range of devices out there. Someone needs to go back into the game at do some further checking :)

In fact there is a nice set of graphics options to play with, to get just the right retro appearance. Just try to see just how many options there are :)

Also I would not mix Hybris together with Battle Squadron. Hybris was the Amiga shooter in which you could change the speed of the bullet. That was not possible to do in Battle Squadron until recent releases on smartphones and now desktops.

Cheers

Wait, I always thought that was only in the Genesis one, and only because EA fucked up the game balance so horribly :D How do I get to it in the Amiga version?

You can go to http://copecom.com and pick a version that suits your needs. The game is 100% (+new adds) like the original Amiga version with all its glory and a 68 K code port line by line.

There is even a FREE DEMO for desktop PC, Mac OS X and AmigaOS 4.X.

Well, I tried it again, and this time it worked flawlessly. Strange.

You're probably right. Maybe I got the versions mixed up.

I thought it was the same developers, Innerprise Software, with EA only as the publisher?

Edit: Doh. I was confused. Innerprise Software only published the Amiga version with Cope-com as the developer.

I only just noticed you're actually from Cope TorbenLarsen. Thanks so much for coming and sharing this with us. It's always nice when a dev comes to the forum with their game. I'm sure will say it's just a matter of promotion (hell, if I made a shmup I'd let people here know!), but it's great when devs engage with our discussions (and confusions!) around their gamea. Great to have you answering our questions.

And I was a real Amiga fanboy back in the early-90s, so I will check this out. A little treat for myself once a mad week of work is out the way.

It amuses me that TorbenLarsen has advertised Battle Squadron so often (once for each re-release) that he doesn't even dare to mention its name in the title anymore.

(Please note that I do like the game and have 2 versions of Battle Squadron in my collection. Best of luck!)

Glorious! Thanks for sharing this. :)

I was also big on the Amiga back in the day, so it's nice to see that vibe is still alive in a small capacity.

Will look forward to trying this after work today!

Slightly OT, but TobenLarsen, would you mind telling me what the deal was with the Genesis/Megadrive version? After looking at the credits, it looks like you were involved with the Genesis version, along with Martin B. Pederson who is also with Cope-com? I'm really confused about Innerprise Software. It appears to be a different company from Cope-Com, but Cope-Com staff is credited in a couple of their games.

After trying the demo... the screen is so filled with various "demo counter" and "achievement" texts that the game itself is kind of lost there. I definitely prefer the original version, one without achievements and such modern nonsense :)

One thing about the demo. I like what I tried of it, but the controller configuration has no options for changing which button brings up the pause menu. It lets you change something to a button that brings up the menu, but doing so does that function and then brings up the menu. I also agree on the achievements, though I didn't find them to be game breaking or anything like that.
