Samurai Shodown button mashing is...

Post by Ed Oscuro »

Utterly pointless, if JoyStiq has it right. They apparently have a typo here ("ported to the Neo Geo") but apparently the factoid is true.

Damnit. Such a shaaaaaaaame.
I wonder if other ports actually did implement code to actually check for button mashing.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I'm pretty sure the grapples in the Neo-Geo King of the Monsters 2 were also random.

Remember playing it on my Neo Geo CD when it came out and not pressing (or just a few times) any buttons during this particular situation in the game and still winning the duel. So it is true that its random.

Yeah, I'm not surprised actually. I was thinking about this the other day, since I've been playing the Japanese MD version. Sure enough, just tapping a couple of times seemed to win the clinch. Other times I'd go mad on the pad and lose, so yeah.

Not only that, but also I was playing this version with a mate the other night, and it seemed as if we got into a clinch almost at the start of every round!!

Play Samurai Spirits 2 instead. Problem solved.

As a fair fan of this game, I agree that it's probably true there as well

I wonder if the "test of strength" clashes in AKI's N64 wrestling quartet (occurring when two grapple attempts collide) are random too? Just how much of our button-mashing gamer machismo is all a lie?

King of the Monsters 2 eh? I knew I was trying to sell the cart off for a reason :D

If that were to be the case then I'd imagine KOTM 1 and 3 Count Bout would be affected too, although in all honesty with button-mash grappling being the core mechanic in those games I doubt that could possibly be.

If it is then we are all idiots :)

Reminds me of how in God Hand, the button mash indicator is the Circle button, but you can actually mash all of the buttons (Circle, Square, Triangle, X) to add damage during stuff like Pummel... except that that's more of a "oh cool, MOAR damage!" when you discover it than a supposed skill event being purely a random bullshit coin flip.

Reminds me of those "test your strength" machines, that had you pull a trigger as hard as you can. Only the trigger is a digital button.

As a kid, we had a lot of bizarre theories about those, where you have to squeeze as light as possible to get high ranks, etc.

I knew it. Hitting the button 9x per second doesn't guarantee jack.

I have a question about this series, which is not worth creating a new topic: What are the strong and weak points of Samurai Shodown IV and V Special?

SSIV has a button press counter for both sides during a clash, so it's definitely not random.

Son of a bitch the amount of times i hammered the buttons at the arcade to those little duels and lost because i thought i was not pressing fast enough and the reality is that its freaking random! damnit!

I actually listened to some of the podcast (linked from my first post above). Amazingly, the crowd actually proved to be useful at times, even the woman who gave some tips about Japanese! (Insert rant about podcasts being fundamentally broken - but seriously shut up and let the interviewee TALK! Also, was this seriously just from earlier this year? It seems like so long ago.)

I think this is as good a time as any to dump what's in my clipboard again:

"All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai."

IV sucks, V Special is one of the greatest games ever made.

I don't love V Special that much, but I sure agree that it's a lot more fun than IV.
