It kind of looks like Zing Zing Zip, Pork and Takimi Fighters all got thrown into Facebook's washing machine on a full cycle. The detergent obviously removed all the bullets.

It doesn't remember how to do great games any more but it still follows the scent of money...pathetic.

Guys, it's the same shitstorm every time a traditional developer announces a game like this one. It's an obvious quick cash-grab, so they have the money and resources to put in a game they would actually want to make later. Don't think they wouldn't rather be developing a traditional game in their style instead of this, but they aren't exactly in the best position, financially. This game is not for us, it's for all the people that surprisingly keep throwing money at phone minigames. So let they do something like this once in a while. If it works, if it nets them some money, the shmups will probably keep coming.

Yep - fair enough. That's a point I often make, and yet here I am slating this game. It just looks… well… I'll have to hope for being pleasantly surprised!

I might complain about some of the elements if it was an expensive arcade kit or a $100 console port but for the cost of an ios game? Who gives a shit. I spend more on snacks and coffee in a day than this will cost. Day 1 purchase thanks bye.

I'll always buy Cave games on iOS, and I've enjoyed them all. But while I do sometimes resent the race to the bottom that pushed iOS game prices so low and really warped consumer expectations, it remains the case that Cave's iOS games are far from cheap, relative to most App Store games.

But you may well drink a lot of good coffee!

"relative to most App Store games" is the key piece of your post. Indeed they are more than the 99 cent to 1.99 cent average for Caves but even at ~5.99 it's less than a day of gas station snacks. Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather see Cave release an arcade game and it feels in some way like a waste of artistic effort to put their stuff starting out on ios like this. I'm not calling it ideal. I could complain about ship upgrades being unreadable in English and so on too, but realistically, for a few bucks, it's literally not costing me shit. Do you guys go to the bar? Because this is like 1 drink so cry me a f***ing river.

Stop using logic and perspective - you must have missed the memo, games are all worth $1 now on phones.

Haha, apparently the memo I received for puzzle games prices them at nothing but it makes it temporarily impossible now and then to pass a level without paying for an ingame cheat which I always refuse out of principle not money. I'll be the first to admit I'd rather burn down their HQ than pay for cheat-advancing. Still if it's cheap enough and it's possible for advancing over time with just the initial $5 payment or no cash, then there we go.

That remains to be seen. If skillful playing means more fuel than yes...but judging by most others free to play games out there I wouldn't expect too much.
And yeah, I pretty much believe this will be a f2p game...

inb4 You get assigned a maximum of 3-star rating for your performance in each stage, just like every other iOS game. And there are probably missions such as "Kill X Enemies" and so on that you can skip by spending real money, again, just like every other iOS game.

You're right. Compared to how much games are away from mobile, it's a great deal. And the consumer expectation of such low prices for mobile is stifling and part of what bred aggressively monetized free-to-play.

But I am tea-total, so if I go to a bar and spend more than a Cave iOS game on one drink, I'll have a heart attack! That's the price I pay when I buy my wife a drink!

And I will remain hopeful that this game is great. I've enjoyed every other Cave iOS game and got more than my money's worth out of it, so why shouldn't I be optimistic? It was just that seeing that video was... well… surprising.

If cave wants to pull in "filthy casuals" without creating shitty games that will annoy its long term fans, it should follow in ZUN's glorious strides, namely, creating a large cast of beautiful girls that people will write a lot of doujin porn about. And I don't mean shitty robo girls with such edge that you can't even shake their hand without having your hitbox grazed, I mean honest to goodness "healing-anime"-style flat-chested girls who are over 1000 years old so that it's okay to fap to them. Because, I mean seriously, think about your favorite fictional universe, think about what lead you to first really dive into it (;) ;) ;) ;)) and think about what makes you keep coming back for more. Okay so this is a bit lewd, but mastur"bait" is literally the ideal mechanism by which a series both captures fans and develops loyalty. And not like "uuu~ sayaka-chan is so moe I'm gonna DIEEEEEEE (and so is SHEEE xdDDDDD)" but I mean like thousands of gigabytes of lossily-compressed doujin arranges of the music and even culture SO DEEP that it gets studied at Oxford (no actually wait for the banner to change a couple of times, it's a real 2hu being discussed by real academics).

I think the key is time scale. If you think about your most rapid improvement in shmups, it likely happened in an era where you practiced consistently for like 2 hours a day maybe. Not that random week over the summer where you played 20 hours a day and then burned out, not during finals week when you binged on the weekened and then stopped playing when your exams started and you had to cram, but just consistent short periods. And masturbation forces you to engage in PRECISELY this schedule. Masturbating to fan works of a series is the single most efficient way to both develop a knowledge of the universe (fictional AND real) as well as to develop technique with respect to said universe.

Just my two cents.

I copied that whole thing into a text file. It's useful advice to keep in mind if I ever get into game development.

After some tossing (!) and turning the other night, I rolled over and played some Futari BL iOS. I think it's prob the only Cave stuff I've played in the last year+ that wasn't testing a board before it went in the post.
