RQ: How to continue play in Raiden Fighters w/ slave ships?

If I start play in Raiden Fighters (either II or Jet --- maybe I also) using a slave ship and then die but want to continue, can I continue play still using a slave ship?

If so, how?

This might be helpful. Try making sure you hit Shot + Bomb together when you use a continue and select a ship. I'm not really that familiar with using the slave ships (or good at the game in general really) so I'm not sure if this'll work.

Yeah, that's what I first tried when I wanted to continue playing using the Fairy I started the game with... but it didn't work
