Wicked. Yet more evidence that people into shmups and people into IDM and lots of types of noisy/fast/experimental electronic music are one and the same. I guess certain people like it intense.

Only other UK celebrity shmup fan I know is Jonathan Ross. Work has brought me to chat with him about games a few times, and boy, he likes R-Type and lots of other verts of that era.

I've often thought this, I wonder why the two things appeal mutually to the same people? Apart from their shared 'intensity' as you say. I've always felt that both things have a sort of technical, mechanical feel to them.

The colorful bullets and flashing lights certainly didn't inspire their live show. I'm a fan of their music, but easily the worst concert I've been to in the last decade. Completely dark club with two faces illuminated at the front by a laptop screen. Doing what, exactly?

Still mad.

Guess you didn't make it to the infamous Aphex Twin concert in Yokohama stadium some 15 years ago. He got caned for playing like 30 minutes, but he played in a barely visible, side-stage booth. Just nobody noticed. Haha.

I think AE really benefit from a stripped down show. Only problem I had when I saw them in 2010 was the. Muddy sound. Wish they'd spent some more time soundcheking, was just a big Funktion 1 bassblob at 220 db. Deep house at 05:30am works at that kind of volume, but loads of intricacy was lost. Everyone was dancing like a tosser too. Maybe Autechre just don't work unless you're an introverted 16 year old obsessively listening through headphones.
