I didn't know this until I had read it in a book, but the cocktail cabs were the standard during the "Invader Boom" as they called it. Rows and rows of them... often with a line. Probably in smoke-filled rooms. The book "It Started With Pong" has a few pictures. Groovy haircuts and all!PC Engine Fan X! wrote: Those were the days of early 1980s arcade gaming of lore.

Do they really sell for that much there? Taito cocktails are ten a penny in the UK, you're lucky to get £300 for a good one.
For example, this will probably not sell:

"Showa" era hardware is few and far between here, as price has always been such a premium. This one is also in good shape. I doubt this will sell at that price, but I would be shocked if in reality, it sold under 150,000 assuming he started it at zero. Then again, times are tough, so who knows.system11 wrote:Do they really sell for that much there? Taito cocktails are ten a penny in the UK, you're lucky to get £300 for a good one.

We talk about it a lot at gamengai, but even hardware from the mid-90's (Idya, for example) is most likely gone save maybe a few pieces as nobody wants to store it. I have a friend whose dream item is an original Donkey Kong cabinet from Japan. He's roughly my age and quite knowledgeable in the arcade world. He said these were the norm for a while, until they realized they could just ship the PCBs and swap them some time later. There's gotta be one somewhere, but I've never seen an original cab from the early 80's here.

Re: Arcades - A tribute
A Great Topic !
When walking with a new japanese friend after a bar trip, he shows us an Arcade with 2 vertical Taito HD cabs and FREE Dôjins available.
Here is a picture and a plan. It is near the JR Station, you just have to go straight with the Gundam Cafe on your back.
Pictures "talks" better than me (and my poor english).
So sorry rancor I could'nt met you in Tokyo .

according to the signage, that's another Tokyo Leisure Land! I had no idea there was more than one, and certainly didn't know it was in Akihabara! Do you remember any of the titles they had there? Any interior shots? I may take some pics next time I'm there if I can find it from the map above. Thanks for posting setsuan, and it is a shame that we didn't get to meet up.

San Francisco Gate has an article up called The Pong goodbye: Arcade photos from the 1970s and 1980s with some cool photos of the old arcade scene in the states.
Feedback will set you free.

I just posted some pictures of an arcade in Yokohama called Freedom to my blog.
There are unfortunately no STG's at this arcade (unless you count whatever's on the NESiCA cab), but it's pretty bitchin' if you play fighting games.

there are actually two Tokyo Leisure Lands in Akihabara. The one pictured is the second location, the first is in the alley behind the Club Sega across the street from the station. (not the one with no games that doesn't require you to cross a street)

In August. They've clearly not found a new tenant (not surprising given the stale air) b/c the sign is still up outside, but it's all closed up.cicada88 wrote:ugh, Shibuya Kaikan closed?

I think versus Gundam floated that place (or at least attempted to) for the last couple of years. Indeed it's sad. Center-gai is basically arcade free now.

Awesome, well-written thread. Amazing how one can feel melancholy and nostalgia for places/times never personally experienced. I need to visit Japan some day.
Re: Arcades - A tribute
Went to Try Amusement Tower in Akiba Thursday for the first time in about a year. They have changed things up a bit on the retro floor, with a very healthy selection of classic shmups. Finally got to put all that Hishouzame practice to use by failing hard in a true arcade setting Snapped some (blurry phone) pics of the shmup floor for anyone who is interested:
They really need to frame all these old posters seriously:
Neo XYX running on the cab on the right:
They have a Gradius thing going on, with a corner section with cabs of the first three games. While I was there some old lady who had to be in her 60's was tearing up loop 2 of Gradius 1. I love this country.
The Futari cutout is even autographed!
It's not on the main strip so most people never make it over to this arcade when they visit Akiba, but you really should go especially if you're a shmup fan. Taito Hey! is probably the ultimate shmup arcade in Akiba, but Try has an almost totally different set of games available, and a nice relaxing atmosphere.
