Super Mario 3D World
I still think Galaxy apologists are being in denial, but am first to admit 3D World looks good. This and Mario Kart 8 ought to be the first nice looking Mario games in absolute ages. First since MK: Super Circuit?
Either I suck for such camera more than I thought, or good old 2.5D is too hard to screw up even for Nintendo A.D. 2013. It may not look better than Kororinpa or Kuri Kuri Mix, but neither does it need to.
Alas, Mario is still voiced and I don't like the music I hear (liked Galaxy tunes in fact). Nevertheless, Wii U shapes up to be the new GameCube rather than the new N64. I'm under impression Nintendo tries harder than with the Wii.

the n64 and the gamecube are the same. nintendo is trying as hard as they always have, and i look forward to their works because hey they actually make games. they really shouldn't be dealing with online but it's probably the only way to make the vc system work. not a lot more to say about the company.

Whoever does the level design for these Mario 3D World games is a freakin genius.

Considering it's the best selling game on the second best selling console platform of all time, probably not.Despatche wrote:on a related note i'm probably the only fan of nsmb ds in existence
We're talking nearly double San Andreas numbers here. For something that was a little less work to create.
PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

Weren't all best selling Nintendo games bundled with hardware on a terrific scale? I wonder how standalone copies sold. Granted, many parents must have bought it with their kids in mind, but whether generations raised on the first SMB really liked to play the update by themselves is another question.

Don't want to detract from the thread, but what on earth was wrong with the mario galaxy games? They were among the best titles on the Wii and are still wildly imaginative. I don't know about the 'new super mario' games, but I think all the 3D ones (including sunshine) brought something to the table.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I still think Galaxy apologists are being in denial

I don't have a Wii U, but the Mario games are what made me a gamer so I'll always have a soft spot for them (and by extension Nintendo as a whole, to some extent at least); the most recent video or two for 3D World looked pretty good to me, and more importantly didn't seem unduly system gimmick-obsessed (not to mention finally gave Peach an overdue break from being kidnapped), so off the cuff it looks like it deserves to do well. Of course, playing is believing...

If you didn't play other 3D platformers than Mario games to any significant extent, Galaxy may seem like the best one to date.
Ugly patchwork if you ask me (the first one), but hell if I know what happens behind curtains when brand loyallists wait for another Mario to arrive.
(I already ranted about Galaxy baing a disappointment in my book; which is not to say I revisited my most cherished 3D platformers since then.)(*)

I like that it takes stuff from SMB2/DDP. I really hope they go all out and we see Phanto, Birdo and Shy Guys.
Really don't like that dusk level. The lighting does something really ugly to the colours they used.

Lou Reed died today. And H Yamauchi died not too long ago. I had a dream last night, in that I woke up to a world where Miyamoto had also passed.BulletMagnet wrote:I don't have a Wii U, but the Mario games are what made me a gamer so I'll always have a soft spot for them (and by extension Nintendo as a whole, to some extent at least); the most recent video or two for 3D World looked pretty good to me, and more importantly didn't seem unduly system gimmick-obsessed (not to mention finally gave Peach an overdue break from being kidnapped), so off the cuff it looks like it deserves to do well. I can't really talk about recent Mario games, as although I own Mario Galaxy 2, I've never really played it. But I remember Super Mario World as being the one game (even in import form) that convinced me that the Super Famicom was the machine to own. I may have ended up settling for Sega's cheaper Megadrive until the SFC was released in the UK (upon which time I promptly sold my MD and bought a SNES), but I too owe a huge debt to both Mario and Miyamoto for enlightening me and turning me on towards the SNES. Mario 64's public unveiling also again confirmed my faith in Nintendo, even if the N64 was hampered by its storage medium.
Having not played the recent Mario games, and having also been turned off by recent Zelda entries (Twilight Princess and Wind Waker), I can't say for certain if AAA Nintendo properties are in safe hands now that Miyamoto has effectively retired from the company. With that being said, and even though I haven't played the game, Skyward Sword was apparently directed by Hidemaro Fujibayashi - who also did the Capcom developed Zelda: The Minnish Cap game (which was a BRILLIANT game).
As much as I don't like (or recognise) Nintendo for the company that they are now, part of me is wary of the day when I'll be having to say goodbye to another childhood hero. And believe me, as I get older, these kind of occurences are beginning to happen more and more frequently.

Re: Super Mario 3D World
I remember playing Rayman 2 on my Dreamcast when it was first released over 10 years ago. That game (even though it is linear in how it funnels its protagonist from point A to point B) is just as good as Mario 64, and in some ways, even better.CMoon wrote:Don't want to detract from the thread, but what on earth was wrong with the mario galaxy games? I remember when I said that upon playing (and completing) Rayman 2, and most gaming enthusiasts didn't want to listen. As far as they were concerned, its lack of Nintendo and Japanese pedigree automatically rendered it as not being as good as a certain Nintendo first party title. Even second party Nintendo 3D platformers (like Banjo Kazooi) were universally heralded as superb games, whilst the under-appreciated Rayman 2 languished unnoticed in the second hand bargain basement bin.
I'm just glad that M Ancel has been able to carve out a real name for himself since the release of Rayman 2 - going on to release wonderfully inventive titles like BG&E and King Kong. And let's not forget that the recent 2D Rayman games have given Nintendo's own 2D platforming games a good run for their money, to the extent that Rayman Legends is now being argued as offering a better platforming experience than even Mario himself has in recent years.
In short, a lot of open-minded gamers (who don't swallow all of Nintendo's hype verbatim) are arguing that Mario's crown has now been stolen, and that Mario is no longer the "king of platformers". That title has now been succeeded and passed on to M Ancel and his wonderful creation - Rayman.
Edit: Best thing of all is that Rayman is multi-platform, which means that people aren't "forced" into buying a console that they don't want to own. And by extending the software reach, many more gamers will be able to experience the highs that are offered by Ancel's most memorable creation.

Which isn't me. Please don't pigeon-hole my opinion. I genuinely enjoyed Galaxy for what it was and probably have less attachment to the plumber than most other people on the board. Loved the gravity mechanic and thought the level designs were really nice. Enjoyed the trailer for this new game, but don't see why this looks astounding to you, but galaxy doesn't.Obiwanshinobi wrote:If you didn't play other 3D platformers than Mario games to any significant extent, Galaxy may seem like the best one to date.
Anyway, I've owned and sold every Nintendo console since the N64 (short of the handhelds), and am not getting suckered in again. Too bad it will no doubt be exclusive to WiiU since it means I'll probably never play it.

The graphics look hella nicer and the gameplay looks rush-inducing. SMB Deluxe is one of my most played handheld games, but Galaxy played for speed (Prankster Comet challenge) wasn't fun.

The first Galaxy is so half-baked I can believe 2 is the finished game, but as my backlog grows on and the less I'm likely to complete 1, the less I feel like giving 2 a chance.

This is one of the main reasons why I will not be investing in a new console any time soon. There is too much stuff already out that deserves attention (on Nintendo platforms or otherwise).Obiwanshinobi wrote:The first Galaxy is so half-baked I can believe 2 is the finished game, but as my backlog grows on and the less I'm likely to complete 1, the less I feel like giving 2 a chance.

Re: Super Mario 3D World
I don`t know what mushrooms you`ve been munching, Obiwan, but I`d wager it`s of the kind that Mario wouldn`t touch with a ten-feet pole - the vision impairing ones. In what world is Galaxy not a good looking game? Or Sunshine for that matter? They are visually accomplished titles, both technically and artistically. Unlike the 3D World which barely looks par for the system it is being developed for. If it looked less like a cheap, under-produced HD spin-off of the bland-looking 3DS game and more like a proper, big 3D Mario title, I`m sure you wouldn`t hear these "Galaxy apologists" complain.Obiwanshinobi wrote:This and Mario Kart 8 ought to be the first nice looking Mario games in absolute ages.

To be a bit more fair to the 3D World, it does look to have rock-solid gameplay mechanics, as one would expect from a Mario game, but this is hardly enough for it to be a standout product like Galaxy was.
There are only a handful of levels that require you to be hasty. Add to that the fact that the difficulty is pretty much non-existent in both Galaxy games and the speed running becomes a complete non-issue.but Galaxy played for speed (Prankster Comet challenge) wasn't fun.
Motion controls(having to shake the remote every time you want to spin is annoying given how important this mechanic is and how often you have to use it). Pointer controls(collecting star bits serves very little purpose and should`ve been removed from the game entirely). Pre-set camera angles and constant perspective change don`t work very well with platforming. Occasionally wonky collision detection(it`s not always clear if Mario is going to cling to the edge of the wall or start sliding down). Very little challenge outside of the gimmicky levels where you control a ball by tilting the Wii remote and such. Little variety in boss battles. Purple coins.CMoon wrote:Don't want to detract from the thread, but what on earth was wrong with the mario galaxy games?
Still great games, mind you, but not without their share of flaws. Although some of the issues are native to 3D platformers in general.

There was some new info on Nintendo Direct today. Super Mario 3D World has a shmup stage! There is info about 10 new things in 3D World here, but it's spolier-ish. There's also a Luigi-ized version of the NES Mario Bros. included.

Also, is it the first really high profile, non-sports, non-RTS game sporting such a camera since the Diablo 3 console port? I can't get enough of this view.

So far, it's getting mostly positive reviews with mostly high 9s and 10s. What I read in the reviews and seen of the game in videos looks promising too. The Kart style stage looks especially fun.
Re: Super Mario 3D World
This is the first game I'm actually excited about on the Wii U. But there's no way I'm paying £250 for the occasion. For what the Wii U represents (shitty hardware and incredibly poor third party support = dead future), maybe £150. Tops.
Damnit. I feel like I'm being blackmailed into buying a Wii U. Why can't Nintendo go third party? I'd be spared the expense, and Nintendo would rack up more profit too!
