General League Information
Rules & Guidelines:
This is a purely individual competition. No teams or anything.
No registration needed. If you want to join, just submit a score.
To help ensure the validity of a score, a screenshot will at least be required when you post your score on the thread.
Do keep a replay though just in case someone requests more proof to supplement a screenshot, especially for relatively high scores.
Games will cycle every ten (10) days.
Scores are eligible as soon as the previous SSL has ended as long as the next game to be played has already been determined.
General format of score submission:
Code: Select all
|SSL|<score>|<link to screenshot of score>
no need to include player name in score submission. user account used to post the score will be used as the player name by default
other information (e.g. - ship, stage, etc) will be included depending on what is applicable for the game being played
I plan to write a program that will automatically gather the scores from the game thread so the format for submission of scores will be strictly required
On Game Choice:
The Top 3 players for the current SSL will PM to me 2-3 games each. These games will be put up in a poll to decide what will be the next game to play.
If any of the Top 3 for the current SSL have already taken a turn nominating games, the next highest placers who haven't had a turn yet will be the ones to nominate games instead.
You may nominate any STG that you want to provided that it hasn't been played for SSL yet. Keep in mind that everyone will be voting for what games will eventually be played.
On Scoring:
The maximum points that could be had per SSL is 100pts, which will be given to the player with the highest score for the game being played.
Score Points (SP) = Points computed as a percentage of the top score
Placement Points (PP): Points assigned based on your ranking among the total number of players for that SSL
Final Points = average of SP and PP (this will be your final score for that SSL)
Here are the scores for the SSL games so far:

Also, my ceiling for this game currently is around 300K it appears. I expect to round up the tail-end of this league on a consistent basis thankyouverymuch

Most tournaments/events here work with a thread for discussion in shmups chat and another one for high-scores on the high-scores board, that's why I asked.

Cool, does that make this the discussion thread then? How do I Gunbird? Also why can't I choose Lucy Liu? She's on the cover...

That's Gunbird, we're playing Gunbird 2 (that isn't Mobile Light Force 2).

I'm so confused... you're telling me Gunbird 2 isn't about spirit summoning flying people fighting demons? My life is a lie...

Can there be only one thread (this one) for all SSL non-score-related discussion? Or does there have to be one discussion thread for every week/game? I just think that the latter might clutter up the Shmup board, is all
Score thread has been created for Week #1 btw:
Solo Shmup League Week #1 - Gunbird 2 (Score Thread)
If this one thread can suffice for all SSL-releated non-score discussion, I'll keep track of all the score threads in the OP.

You might want to keep the game of the week in the title of the thread though for promotional purposes. You can just update the title with each new game.

This game has a default stage order on startup (USA, Italy, Japan). To make things easier to practice you can just SHIFT + F3 to get that order all the time, or use a savestate on a new run to save time and hard reset for recorded runs.

Thanks for the tip.
But once you die and start a new run without restarting the game, the order rotates (or randomizes?) right?

Yes, you have to hard reset (SHIFT+F3) to get the defaults again.

Yeah, so thoughts after playing the game over the weekend:
- I should really try maybe focusing on using Tavia starting now instead of randomizing like what I've been doing. I had the most comfortable time using her and it seems most of the high scorers have been using her as well.
- Other characters I also like: Aine & Valpiro.
- Can't be bother to chain coins. Too busy dodging bullets O_o and I am not good at dodging bullets.

Tavia is good for survival due to her bullet-cancelling melee attack. I really like Valpiro too: melee is usually a one hit kill with good range, and his charge shot is great for screen control. But he's rather slow, and it seems to me that he has a larger hitbox than other characters (dunno if this is true though). The WR is an Aine run, but he's hard to use correctly.
Personally I've been using Marion. Her regular shot is pretty flexible; from up close it deals a lot of damage and is great for speedkilling. From far away, homing shots leave you more room to chain coins. And her melee is pretty decent too, so you can be rather aggressive with her. Very fun character to use.
As for coin chaining, yeah if you are new to the game you should not focus on that. But trying to get used to the 2000 timing is a good idea, even if you will not be going for carefully planned extended chains.

Yeah I meant to post a Gunbird score but it's been a rough week here. I'll try to throw in a shit score in DDP for the sake of participation, but I hate chaining in DDP so I won't be trying too hard.

Holy crap, I didn't know Tavia has a bullet canceling technique, my score would have definitely been higher if I knew about it, what do you press to activate it?
