Well I feel kind of dumb. I didn't know there was a "Lite" version of Deathsmiles to download. I guess I didn't have to ask my previous question.

And I'm glad I played the Lite version because I highly, highly doubt I'll buy this game. For one thing the game isn't all that fun to play because your hands cover part of the screen and when enemies come from both sides- that's a problem. Another thing is that the visuals look awful on an iPad. I didn't see an HD version in itunes; they really ought to make one.

The final nail in the coffin for me is that the game is like 11 or 12 dollars! I'm pretty sure that's about what I paid for my 360 copy of the game. I'm not going to double-dip on this title unless I see a significant price drop.

I'll probably get Mushihimesama instead; I think it's only five dollars.

I'm pretty sure no one actually pays full price for Cave games. They go on sale every other week for various reasons (ok, a bit of an exaggeration), and sometimes even the IAP go on sale. And their sales are significant. Usually more than 50% off. I bought every Cave game on sale. Especially Futari. $14 is obscene.

On Deathsmiles, I actually got used to it. It's kind of like on a vertical game where you have to touch the top of the screen because of enemies and bullets on the bottom.

Well what a coincidence. I complain about prices and they put things on sale. :P

4 characters. Three from the original arcade ver plus one new for the iphone mode. You can't play iphone mode with original characters and can't play arcade mode with new character.
Actually, thats 4 chars for the original arcade version and one for the Smartphone mode. The bad thing about that game is that is IAP heavy... the best items, and the ones that can make you actually finish the game in the hardest modes (not that you cannot doit, is just that you'll be very underpowered most of the time... unless you get unique items, which are EXTREMELY RARE!) are only available thru IAPs ... and that hurts!.

Hey all,
been a long time lurker, finally registered.
Some really great stuff on here!!! We love it!

Anyways, thought I'd post in here, as we happen to have a list of some of the perhaps less well known shmups collated.
*WARNING* These are of greatly varying quality.. but links are generally to LITE versions, so please be nice! ;)

Its missing the CAVE collection of shmups which are typically higher quality and pretty well known.
Forgive us if the list falls rather short. Let us know and we'll add to it!

We'll try and keep them updated on a group on Deviant Art called #Shmuproom (shameless plug) if anyone is interested. ^_^

He's the direct link iphone shmup games,

I've tried to convert over to the BB format below too, hopefully it won't turn out a mess..

Air Hunter (에어헌터) for Kakao by WeMade Entertainment CO., LTD
https://appsto.re/us/pbr8J.i
Check out this great korean shmup! It looks much more detailed and better than LightningFighter2, trust me. For normal play you must create a KakaoTalk account, its easy, but game is on korean only, including its name...hard to find must-have item.

I viewed this dA group and I found out that the list is incomplete, because there are many iOS shmups out there, including those listed on Hardcore Gaming 101, and recent individual iOS shmup threads here like this one.
I express my apologies for posting a bunch of mobile shmup threads in this forum in recent months, because some members perceive them as "spam." I have to redeem myself.

Speaking of iPad Shmups... does anyone have "Gridlee" installed? It was a MAME app that came out early in the year and played just one title: Gridlee, a game no one had ever heard of. Word got out that one could just drop roms into the Documents folder of the app and they would be playable, so it was pulled after 30 days.

I snagged the app while it was still available, and then forgot about it. Now I'm wondering if anyone has tried out any Shmup titles, I believe the app is running Mame .139u1

The controls are touch in the sense you move a virtual joystick & press buttons by tapping. I believe though that Gridlee is iCade compatible.

Update: Playing Battle Garegga on my iPad this morning 8) Tested Dodonpachi, Giga Wing, Gunbird, Guwange, 1944, and 19XX as well. Gunbird 2 works, but with a lot of slowdown.

Well, in this case I would like to propose Teslapunk
It is also a free shmup available for iOS.

iOS Version: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/teslapunk/id639646009

Trailer: http://vimeo.com/70820213

To be fair I should mention, that I am one of the developers. But I would still reccomend the game for your list. ;)

Yeah, I was surprised when I upgrade to the 5S from 4S. Not only was the screen not optimized, but controls were super buggy, and I noticed DOJ was completely unplayable. Works now though. I just wish they would have put all the extra space at the bottom of the screen instead of half on top half on bottom - let them know in the reviews.

Cave have to do that way so it still stays playable on the 3.7'' screens.
If they had all the extra space all at the bottom the top part of the game play would be cropped off on the 4S.

The way apple has it setup is to crop 50% off from the top and 50% from the bottom of the screen when it runs apps optimized for the 4'' screens.

For scrolling text etc it's no problem(IE Facebook) as it knows how to scale the app but for games it simply crops them.

Or in other words support iOS7? EDIT: All of Cave's games for iOS support iOS7.

A list of existing iOS-Universal shmups (mentioned in this whole forum) that had updated for iOS7 compatibility as of this posting (in no particular order):
Plasma Sky
Techno Trancer
Phoenix HD
AstroWings for Kakao (?)

(Mentioning of iOS shmups not included in the above list is appreciated.)

Also I think that Jet Fighter Ace: Secret Wars is no longer in the iTunes App Store.

Bug Panic was updated, at the same time as all the others.

DDP Maximum doesn't need an update since it had this from the start.

Um, no. Got a link to documentation supporting this claim? Step 1: retrieve size of screen. Step 2: do whatever you want. Have you played Danmaku Unlimited 2?

Not to sound like a cheapskate (just under a tight budget); but, what are the more notable free full shmups available for iOS?

The best one I've come across so far is Phoenix HD.

Other than that, most of the shmups I have on my iPhone are all of the Cave games, but just the Lite versions. That's nine Cave demo games and I've been playing the heck out of them lately. Add to that Danmaku Unlimited 2 Lite and there's a good amount of minutes to be had on my phone... but I was hoping for a free game that is remotely as good as Danmaku or the Cave shmups.

I'm planning to check out Teslapunk later today, so hopefully that's a good free game.

Okay thanks Remembrance.

In the meantime, do you know that the newest bullet hell shooter for iOS as of this posting is?

EDIT: The upcoming iPad shmup I mentioned is finally released today!

I just bought Danmaku Unlimted 2 after playing the heck out of the Lite version.

I also want one of the Cave games available on iOS, but I can't decide which one because all of them seem solid in their own way. Here are the Cave games currently available on iOS:

Bug Princess - $4.99
Bug Princess 2 - $6.99
Bug Princess 2 Black Label - $13.99
Deathsmiles - $11.99
Dodonpachi Blissful Death - $4.99
Dodonpachi Maximum - $11.99
Dodonpachi Resurrection - $7.99
Espgaluda II - $7.99
Mushuhumesama Bug Panic - $6.99

Does anyone have any opinions on what might give the best bang for the buck out of those games, considering those prices?

Well you should know that every single cave game eventually goes on a pretty significant sale from time to time, even IAP. Personally, I gravitate towards the older games , not because they're cheaper, I just like that era the best.

Maximum plays the best, namely because it was designed around not requiring a bunch of horrible onscreen buttons. The iPhone mode of Galuda 2 might be interesting, but for the most part, you can pretty much bet they all play a lot better with a controller/stick with actual buttons, particularly the games that require lots of shot type switching for scoring.

Just get whatever game you like the best so you have it on the go, but accept that it won't be as much fun or as easy to control when it comes to rapid shot type switching/hypering/bombing.
