Capcom Generation Vol.1 (1942/1943/1943 Kai)
Just a quick and dirty table until the admins salvage the old threads (or not...)
Full defaults, one credit. No 1943 weapon selection trick.

1943 Kai
AWJ - 875280 - 5 - xmame
1943 Kai is kind of a lame excuse for an "upgrade"... there are fewer stages, the Shot Gun is ridiculously overpowered, the planes look cartoony, the Shot Gun is way too good, the music is this weird un-harmonic shit that I'm really not fond of (what's the musical term for the opposite of harmony? I can't remember), and did I mention the Shot Gun is overpowered?
And despite the godliness of the Shot Gun, I still always die in exactly the same place in Kai as in the original--the sky part of the Ise stage, where those screen-spanning formations of small and midsize planes come up from behind you. The only difference is that getting to that point in Kai is a lot more boring--there's almost no need to dodge, just blast everything out of your way with the Shot Gun, planes and bullets alike.

I need to dig up my old Kai score again; I usually breeze pretty far in as well. I don't use the Shotgun much, but having the laser as a standard weapon doesn't do much for the game balance either (even if it is a tiny bit weaker than in 1943.)
EDIT: got a new 1943 score:
Zach Keene - 2,052,090 - 12 - SAT
I was sitting right on top of Yamashiro's control tower when it blew.

All right, I've finally got a 1943 score I can post without shame.
1943
AWJ - 1781310 - 12 - xmame (Japan romset)
This is the first time I've gotten past stage 7, so the second half of the game was entirely "by ear". I made several sloppy mistakes (even crashed into a bomber once or twice), but fortunately all of them were before a Yashichi. I got 100% on every boss except the Ayakos (I don't think it's physically possible without an autofire device or the laser) but no Mobichans, so my score is quite a bit lower than Zach's on the same stage.
Here's a nasty swindle that should be added to the guide: If you start shooting the instant you enter the surface section of stage 4 (Fuso), the first formation of red planes won't yield a POW for some reason. This is truly evil since stage 4 contains no fixed energy tanks or Yashichi and this POW is the most suitably placed one in the stage to turn into an energy tank. I haven't seen this happen anywhere else. Does this happen in the Capcom Generation ports, or did they fix it?

Yeah. You can hit planes that are just offscreen, and if the last red plane is offscreen when you destroy it the POW won't appear. There's a red plane formation in level 1 I manage to do this often with as well.AWJ wrote:Here's a nasty swindle that should be added to the guide: If you start shooting the instant you enter the surface section of stage 4 (Fuso), the first formation of red planes won't yield a POW for some reason.
(Similarly if you manage to shoot a POW off the top of the screen it'll disappear.)
If you enter Fuso's naval area with a 3 Way (maybe the super shotgun as well?) you're perfectly positioned to take that formation out before you ever see any of the planes.
And yeah, it still happens on the Capcom Generation version.
The sad thing is that I've done this often enough even before your warning that I should've learned by now.AWJ wrote:Ahahaha, I warned you about thatZach Keene wrote:I was sitting right on top of Yamashiro's control tower when it blew

Today the IJN suffered a major defeat, four of their Aircraft Carriers and a couple of their Battleships and Battlecursers were sunk by a lone P-38 Lightening piloted by a mysterious black cat. The P-38 was later missing in action on a mission in an attempt to intercept an enemy bomber.

SAM - 2,036,610 - 14 - PCB (Japanese Version)
w/ 15Hz Auto Fire support.
Wow, the auto fire circult really turns the basic twin shots into a ship busting weapon. I can only reach as far as stage 7 without it.

Played a few games of 1942 today. Still cann't pass Marshell Islands.
1942
SAM - 258,380 - 07 - MAME
I do reminder I have once seen a huge bomber boss, but that years ago, and I cannn't remember the scores or whether I had used any continues to get there. Anyway I usually go down in flame at Marshell Islands.

Mame - 1943 Kai - 3,474,720.
This might have been at max difficulty, I can't remember.
As for saying that Kai's music is shit, man, that's sacrilegious.
Edit: Sorry, that's to completion with Kai. Also, I had a crack at 1942 and managed to get 551,060. 1942's a real handbreaker, anyone who can 1cc it must be able to crush ball-barings between their fingers.

1943 is a harder game than 1943 Kai. Kai is basically "1943 Easy Type". The greatly upgraded Shot Gun and the easy availability of side fighters and Laser (even if it is toned down) make it much simpler. It only seems harder because it also skips almost half the original game's stages (including the first stage), bringing you to the harder stages sooner.Carmen wrote:I'll get my terrible, terrible scores up soon to help round out the scoreboard For some reason, and I find this interesting, I'm much, much worse at 1943 then I am in 1943 Kai. Go figure.
I was becoming to come around the same conclusion myself... but isn't Kai *supposed* to be harder? I mean, that is what the websites and such say (Please don't mind me, but I'm new to the 194x series )
Also, one quick question, are we allowed to use a Rapid fire option for the hi-scores, or not? I mean, the AC version didn't have Rapid fire (did it?), but then again, the thought of pressing the fire key a quintillion times doesn't sound too tempting!
