I don't understand the specs on either one of the next consoles, but I hope this kind of thing will be sped up, or kept to a minimum!

Downloads and installs on the Xbox One and the PS4...
I just wonder how many of these there will be on the Xbox One and the PS4. I have a 40gig PS3 and the installs and downloads are constant and seem interminable! I just got Gran Turismo 5 from Gamefly, and it's not even halfway done! (I've been told that the PS3 has the slower wireless G, rather then the faster N-I don't know if that was fixed in the super-slim PS3)

Bro I know that feel on GT5 ... I have a 60GB launch model and had to do the install twice because it failed the first time.
Then there are another 1 or 2GB of updates

You could use the ethernet port if the wireless is really bad. A faster alternative would be playing the game without updating it.dave4shmups wrote:I just wonder how many of these there will be on the Xbox One and the PS4. AFIK, playing games on the PS3 without updates is not an option. Anyway, I still wonder if things will be different/better on the PS4 and Xbox One.Lord of Pirates wrote:You could use the ethernet port if the wireless is really bad. Games will only update if you have the console connected to the internet.

It's an option. It asks you if you want to update, if not it just signs you out of PSN. Exactly like a Xbox 360 does.dave4shmups wrote:AFIK, playing games on the PS3 without updates is not an option. Next generation consoles should from what we've heard not have that problem as they should start playing when they have the first bit of data they need and stream the rest in the background. Who knows if that will work well though.

There are games with mandatory updates (while connected), if I'm remembering rightZellSF wrote: AFIK, playing games on the PS3 without updates is not an option. Anyway, I still wonder if things will be different/better on the PS4 and Xbox One

I'm presuming they're only referring to being able to play games as you download them and not patching on the fly.
IE. Download xMB of the game, it decompresses, the game launches, and the download and decompression continue along in the background.

They would be the same thing, there's no reason for there to be a distinction between downloading a game and a patch.Lord of Pirates wrote: I'm presuming they're only referring to being able to play games as you download them and not patching on the fly.

Also, I've never seen a PS3 game that doesn't allow me to say no to updates nor does it make any sense. If it did that you could just disconnect the console, there's no way to force updates and Sony knows that.
