Even thought I'm a Cave fan I found DoDonPachi Saidaioujou very disappointing. Probably the weakest shmup I have played from Cave which is a huge shame for a farewell game.

Could you elaborate further? How is it worse than Akai Katana, the most widely disliked Cave shooter?

Akai Katana got some great designs though, both the mecha and character designs.

Since when is Akai Katana widely disliked? There's a lot of people into the game, and it really does have some great mechanics, particularly in Shin/Slash.

"Most widely disliked" does not mean "universally hated." It's just not a popular game among STG players.

This is especially true if we're talking about the vanilla arcade version, which seems to get almost no praise compared to Shin. The PCB was received with widespread apathy in arcades.

I won't hear a word against akai katana! It's a superb game and has some of the most fun scoring mechanics to be found in any shooter, especially shin and climax modes. Also has a fair difficulty curve...I do have a special love for this game as it was my second cave 1cc and a game that I really enjoyed working out.I don't see why it's so misunderstood by some.

Because it's a horizontal game.

There are some who dislike the gravity effect on bullets, and I've gotten the impression that in some corners Progear is therefore seen as an odd game. You can certainly find people online bitching heavily about the game, such as:

I think that DDP SDOJ is fantastic. I've received the game about a week ago and already sunk a good 15 hours into it. What exactly do you dislike about it? For how long have you played the game, and which modes?

NOW I start hearing negative comments. I picked this game out because I heard good things and I'm starting to wonder if I should have gone for Ginga Force instead. 360 mode and 1.5 sound like they might be good fun, and I hope I'll find it enjoyable when it arrives at my house.

One person on a messageboard doesn't like it and you're already getting buyer's remorse. That's borderline amazing.

I think Yagawa's entries were more widely disliked than the glory that is Akai Katana.

Deathsmiles should have been the most widely disliked Cave STG of course, yet somehow it escaped all criticism - and it was a hori! Amazing.

Kiken didn't like it either. It still sounds like something I would like, but now I start seeing posts about a bigger hitbox and cramped space. It's not buyer's remorse (and I'm not the buyer since I'm getting it as a gift), just frustration of trying to find concrete information (which I didn't get from Vetus's post).

It seemed well liked for a year or so after the ports came out, but most recently everyone's started to hate on it.

YOU ARE WRONG.

There will be no elaboration, just stop trying to shoehorn this shitty view in at every opportunity.

Thanks.

It's certainly more worthy of hate than Akai Katana, I think we can agree on that at least

I agree on vanilla deathsmiles, but I much prefer deathsmiles mbl (or mbl 1.1) to akai katana.

I don't dig Shin too much. Too much dildo riding, too little dodging.
a bigger hitbox and cramped space
The hitbox is more "correct"; you can actually feel the collision when you hit something. Thank fuck for that too, because you won't have to deal with this.
It doesn't get cramped too often (unless you're on the wrong side of a tank) because everything zips past you at sanic speeds.

I wish I liked Deathsmiles more, but I find it's the Cave game I play the least (of the non-Yagawa games, his stuff isn't really my cup of tea). It's got great music and visuals, but I'm not too fond of the scoring system, and having to worry about enemies coming from multiple sides makes it harder for me than it probably ought to be.

I don't understand why anyone is: it's a shitty, finicky recharge system, coupled with an overlong campaign that makes necessary repetition laborious.

Of course, no-one can say it's not a good game when Cave's general standard is so high, just the one with the poorest balancing imo.

Shin's scoring mechanics are like a warm bed after sex, comparatively.

So, I'm not a Cave ultra veteran player, although I did like Espgaluda and Mushihimesama. Anyway, I'm happy to say that buying this game was the right thing to do. It's great. Keeping in mind, though, that I prefer games with both a high-tech feel and anime characters...

This game didn't have the pick-up-n-play appeal of Caladrius. I'm optimistic, though, that it might grow on me over time.

I really enjoyed the scoring in Deathsmiles. Filling the screen with a slowdown-inducing amount of crowns and letting them break apart into skulls, before hoovering them all up and ending with a screenful of gold crowns for an instant recharge is very satisfying. Of course it requires planning, practice and timing, but so does pretty much any shooting game when played for score. The recharge aspect was also carried over to SDOJ's scoring, which (to get back on topic) is also a very good game. One of Cave's best IMO.

Spend some time on the Xbox 360 mode, which is more accessible, i.e. more forgiving, than the other modes.
