I don't think Deathsmiles is seriously disliked necessarily; there's some very serious players like the one who did an extra stage clear of MBL using Casper. It's just that with the number of Cave style games out there, people tend to prefer some of Cave's other offerings over it.
I'm not overly fond of the scoring in Deathsmiles, myself, I've never really gotten the hang of it, but I do like the actual game itself, its bullet patterns, etc. I find it tricky though, keeping track of both sides of the screen is hard for me.
