Best option for replacement SNES AC Adaptor?

Post by nZero »

I need to get a new AC Adaptor for my SNS-101 Super Nintendo. Looking on Amazon, there are a ton of inexpensive 3rd party replacements, all with middling-to-terrible reviews that mention build quality issues and overheating. Are there any respectable aftermarket options or reasonably priced OEM power supplies available?

Get a 9V one with a current of at least 2A and there won't be any overheating issues. If people complain about overheating while buying AC adapters with merely the wattage their machine requires, it's no wonder that they're plagued by issues.

I just picked up a random adapter (and got someone to solder the original SNES plug to it) and it has been working perfectly with no issues.

So rather than picking up a dedicated SNES adapter (which you say are all bad), maybe find a generic one that you can get the right plug for?

I picked up one of these and it works great, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Nintendo- ... 43be68a4d5

It's 1.2A, seller made a mistake when he posted 1.2ma, I think the original SNES power adapter is 850ma.

Thanks for all of the replies, and thanks for your personal experiences ZellSF and muckyfingers. SNES is happy with drawing 9V, huh? Good to know. The original adaptor was rated at 10V 850mA, but they are not quite cheap at this point. I don't have any experience with any of the aftermarket ones, just a bit concerned by the low reviews on Amazon. If the eBay multiadaptor will do the job reliably, I'd just as soon pull the trigger on one of those.

The SNES uses a 7805 voltage regulator inside (takes X voltage and brings down to 5V for system use), much like the Genesis,TG16, and countless other devices. I haven't looked at the datasheets in awhile but I believe they need a minimum of 7V to operate and a max of like 18V, the higher you go the more heat it dissipates, the hotter the 7805 gets. 9V is just fine to use since even if it dips or spikes a little the 7805 will handle it.
