Yushin has kindly translated the first Special Demonstration into French. Thank you!
You can find it here: http://youtu.be/_L_xuu_tObA
I believe someone was translating #1 and #2 into Spanish…

Special Demonstration #3 is incoming.

Also double check that the .ass was generated correctly, the original script I used didn't properly handled line breaks and i can see that being something someone else gets wrong too. Easiest way to tell is to look at the boss name annotations
Thanks for the info, would you mind sharing your modified script ?

In youtube-ass.py there's a line in method _parse_xml that looks like

text = each.find('TEXT').text.encode('utf-8')

change it to this: text = each.find('TEXT').text.encode('utf-8').replace("\n", "\\n ")

Not sure how I completely miss awesome stuff like this sometimes. But in any case, watched about half of the Garegga demo and it's awesome! Using the annotations for notes is an effective tool for making a nice guide. Vocal commentary and visual notes are both useful in teaching the games in their own way. Great job

I'm gonna have to change some of my DOJ strategy after seeing this. Why not make the extra ships appear in the beginning of stage 3?

Looks like it is time to unleash Special Demonstrations #3: Battle Garegga on the unsuspecting shmupsforum population!

This is another submission by our generous benefactor T3-Kamui, and another Gain replay. This one differs from Special Demonstrations #1 in that it demonstrates a few more of her "new Gain" techniques, which are designed to keep rank high for Black Heart 2 in stage7. A few of these techniques are demonstrated here, and I've annotated in detail where required.

Because of the extra tricks, and also because a number of viewers asked for it, I've added a lot more annotations in places to explain tricks, break up milking phases, and provide some trivia here and there. It was a challenge to keep the annotations short, as Garegga is a technically richer game than Dodonpachi Daioujou, and thus needs more notes to explain things.

There's also a little surprise in this one, but I'm not going to spoil it for you. ^_-

Special Demonstrations #4 is incoming.

Hmmm interesting... I think I would rather watch a run which keeps rank as low as possible (to help those who need some strategies to clear the game), but I'm still going to watch it of course!

I am proud to announce the release of Special Demonstrations #4: Mushihimesama! This one is of the Arrange Mode on the PlayStation 2 port, and features an exclusive run by our very own Smraedis, beasting the game for a massive 1.05bil ALL.

Pretty fun but challenging edit, this one, as the source material was difficult to get into the quality that we both desired, but after a number of tests we finally settled on a transcode that pleased us both. I also wanted to try something a little different with the intro, hopefully people will like it. ^_-

Many thanks to .SM for contributing to the project, and for working closely with me to get this replay out the door at a standard that is true to the Special Demonstrations Project. Hope I can work with you again on more edits in the future, and good luck on your future plays!

I have something extra-special lined up for SD #5. Stay tuned.

Why no replies yet? It was a great watch!

The only thing which really irritated me was the execution of the TLB. Each time you're close to an enemy, W-power of course deals the most damage and S-power the least. If you're far away, it's the exact opposite. If you keep this in mind during the TLB fight, you can speedkill his second form and get an easy no miss from him if you have five bombs for the last attack. Spare lifes are the most important bit for scoring and so this knowledge is inevitable. Here's a replay of it (360 version, but it's the same for PS2): http://youtu.be/l2O7sXgC140

Besides this, still a great replay though! There are far too few for Cave's Arrange modes.

Yes, this game is great and so was this replay. Thanks for your hard work and also thanks to Plasmo for that info about the TLB. Maybe I can finally get the PS2 arrange clear now. :)

Quick question for those who have seen the replay: are the annotations displaying correctly? I've had a single (read: just one) comment that the annotation bubbles are too small and have clipped some of the text, but I've tested it out on Safari, Chrome, Firefox and IE on both Mac OS X.8.4 and Windows 7 and have seen no issues, so have attributed it to the zoom/font-scaling feature of most browsers. Curious to know if its happening elsewhere, as I noticed that the annotations system for YouTube was updated slightly and box-snapping was inexplicably removed, making it harder to position and resize the boxes accurately.

I have the same problem. Seems to just cut off the last line of every annotation.

We found the cause of the problem being the compact version of the YouTube player - if you use the expanded or full screen view, the annotations display fine, but if you use the compact player, the annotations are cropped. Not much I can do about that as it must be an issue with Youtube's new annotations display system and the way its scales fonts.

Quick question: Why is the DOJ Special Demo the run from Prom when there is a much higher scoring run by HFD? Copyright reasons?

Yes, and no. More work than it is worth.
spl wrote:Quick question: Why is the DOJ Special Demo the run from Prom when there is a much higher scoring run by HFD? Copyright reasons?
1) Why would I feature a replay that is commercially available? It defeats the purpose of the Special Demonstrations Project featuring contributed runs and commentary ('contributed' being the key thing here, as I'd like annotation from the players themselves to go with the replays). I have no intention of ever using a replay you can buy in a shop.
2) I am in contact with Prom and not HFD. I like to work closely with the player to produce the final product.
3) If HFD ever gets in touch and is willing to contribute an exclusive replay to the project, then I'd be happy to feature him in the series, otherwise I have no plans to feature a run from him at present.
4) Because superplays don't always have to feature world record holders.
5) Because I can.

Been gone for a while, and extremely happy to find these! All are great, thanks to everyone involved. I'm sure it's been asked but how likely is it that these will ever be hosted somewhere at their original framerate (if they were in fact recorded at 60)? Obviously it's a lot of bandwidth, so it wouldn't be trivial. I think Dailymotion can do 60fps, though I'm not sure how good the quality is.

Anyway, great stuff, keep it up!

None of the original sources or final replays are done at 60fps, both for file size (SD #1 is about 4.2GB on its own) and for encoding speed (an episode at the quality I encode at takes up to 15hrs at 720p30, and that's on an i7 Mac with 4GB RAM). I may do 1080p at some point, but it'll have to be for something very special for that.

that's a shame. these replays are INH-eee quality. keep up the good work though. it's definitely appreciated.

tell me about it. i used to be able to nmnb up to the tlb and i'd game over on her every time. that last pattern was an absolute nightmare.
