Who Draws?
I know we've got some people here who can at least color in the lines. Share your junk.

I draw (very seldom I do) but I don't know how to colour.

Re: Who Draws?
You should try one day. Color theory is pretty interesting to study. You'll make mistakes, but sometimes it's fun to deliberately mess up and try to fix your error. You may create a better composition.

Here's the first page of a comic I was drawing.

Re: Who Draws?
I've been doing some sprites for a game project of mine.

It's still unfinished but it gives an idea of what I'm trying to do. I have some drawings but no scanner for the time being, I'll see if I can upload something later.

The shading on that looks vaguely KOF12/13ish, heh.Hagane wrote:I've been doing some sprites for a game project of mine.

I draw occasionally but it is all terribad [because I don't practice enough, blah].
I did do this for a compo though [it's cover art, it's primarily a music compo]

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Re: Who Draws?
Looking at this thread has suddenly rekindled my desire to improve on my drawings.
A bit of a question: for someone who is completely inept at image editing software (I tried learning photoshop more than just a couple of times and gave up when I was younger) which program do you think would be the easiest for a beginner to learn? I primarily want to use one for colouring my drawings in.

i mainly use photoshop you need only 3-4 tools (brushes/layer/selection/color adjustment) to actual paint something.SuperSoaker360 wrote:Looking at this thread has suddenly rekindled my desire to improve on my drawings.![]()

the rest is go learn the basic on how to paint.
Opencanvas and Sai are very good and simple while totally able to make really intricate pieces as photoshop.
Painter is very good but got difficult learning curve, also it crashed a lot on me so i don't really touch it, in the end it's around 30% tools and 170% on who use it.

I don't draw per se but I do paint, letters mostly (graffiti, calligraphy and font design). I've always been rather jealous of 'proper' artists

Re: Who Draws?
I draw on and off. I was real focused on it in high school but I kind of tapered off in college and have just been lazy since then. I actually just bought a bunch of copics and was starting to work on my inkwork and get back into the groove of drawing regulary just before my apartment was robbed. I want to get back on it once I'm past all this crap and settled back into some sort of routine.
This is the most recent thing I did, it was actually sitting out on my desk the night my place was robbed :/

I haven't drawn for about ten years but I have links to 600+ pages of hand drawn comics produced during various stages of mental instability if anyone's really bored.
Re: Who Draws?
Yeah, I'm aiming for something similar in terms of colouring and animation, though less elaborate to not go completely crazy since I'm doing everything myself.null1024 wrote:The shading on that looks vaguely KOF12/13ish, heh.
I'd appreciate some honest unfiltered feedback on it. I'm trying to make it look as good as I can, but of course my eyes miss lots of errors other people can spot.
Some very rough prototypes of the animation

Re: Who Draws?
Man, I haven't drawn in years. I know I can do some decent stuff - just haven't been working on it for over ten years now.
Hagane:
The first thing that jumped out at me is that the feet are too narrow front-to-back. I'm not sure if that attack animation really works either, but it's not bad. I don't know if you've thought of it, but a simple thing you can do is always make a video of yourself pulling off moves, you don't even need to rotoscope. Many artists will use references for poses and the like; there's no shame in it, although it just messes with things when you try to do something non-naturalistic.
It might not be as naturalistic as what you're trying for, but did you see this analysis of the Darkstalkers animation process when it appeared here a few years ago? You can probably pick and choose a handful of ideas from that and still end up with something fairly naturalistic, if that's your aim.
I would love to find out how pros do movement of voluminous shapes like baggy clothing, without video / rotoscoping. You can see a little of the results of this from #5 in the link.

Re: Who Draws?
Yeah, I've read that article and I'm reading the book it cites. Of course I'm still a novice at this so it won't have a pro quality at least for now.
As for movement, I use Eadweard Muybridge's The Human Figure in Motion and analyze my favorite game's animations (Garou, KOF XIII, Last Blade) to see how they emphasize animation with limited frames. Maybe I could do what you say to have some extra reference for certain animations, but it won't work for every move since a lot of them have exaggerated animations or stuff that wouldn't be easy to perform that way (like aerial moves).

Re: Who Draws?
Some stuff (especially with regards to clothing) is easiest to visualize with a reference, some is just implied by the preceding motion (squash & stretch of course), and what's left are distinct poses; these would comprise a single frame and can be eyeballed from references you find elsewhere (not copied of course) or from references you generate. Actually, another possibility is 3D posing, although it could be more of a hindrance than a help if your model's proportions or details are different from those you're trying to create. Also any of these methods can emphasize naturalism too much for what you're trying to achieve; "impossible" poses or movements might be fine in the context of what you're working for.

Her feet and hands are teeny. Usually in cartoons, oversizing these two extremities gives the character a sense of weight (Rockman would be an extreme example). The kick animation seems to have unnecessary frames after it's reached its full extent, I would assume it would just snap back so you could perform it rapidly? Then again I have no idea what type of game it's for.
On personal preference, she's a little stocky. The shoulder could be a touch higher and so could the breasts, they seem to be very low from the collarbone.
Animation is decent though.
More OT: I used to draw, oh, so long ago when I had time in my life. Now I have a Deviantart graveyard full of really (really) ancient shit and a ton of filled up sketchbooks that never get looked at anymore. All my time these days is spent on graphic design work, and I mean 95% of it.

Re: Who Draws?
I haven't drawn/sketched in about two years. Used to do it a lot, and was always wanting to get back into it, but I think I kind of lost the passion to.
Some of my last designs:

I always wanted to try colouring my stuff on the computer, but I never got around to it. Maybe I should pick up one of those Bamboo Pen tablets, and give it a go after my moving is all done.

Deviantwatching you Skykid.

Re: Who Draws?
Going to go with what Skykid said. Additionally, the shading looks a bit 'flat'. The clothing is also a bit too 'flat' as well, needs some folding over and such. King of Fighters (at least the older ones) have great examples of what I mean. For a great example, take a look at this: http://spritedatabase.net/files/neogeo/ ... /Kyo99.gif.
