Summer Wonder Fest 2013: shmups + game characters spotted

Post by greg »

I was in Chiba on Sunday for the Summer Wonder Fest at the Makuhari Messe convention center, home to the Tokyo Game Show. I spotted shmup ships from Xevious, Border Down, and Ketsui, as well as game characters such as Athena, Rockman, Street Fighter II, Legend of Valkyrie, and Anette from El Viento.
Here are photos I took of the event:

Cool, thanks for sharing! Interesting to see the Norris spider-head there, someone has good taste in Western horror cinema. That MGS figure is indeed Big Boss from the third game.

Yes, the spider head was the coolest part in The Thing. The monster at the very end of the movie was big, of course, in order to be exciting, but I didn't really care for it. The spider head was the most memorable form of the alien in The Thing. There were quite a lot of Alien heads there, as was last year. However, last year there was a lot of Blade Runner stuff.

One thing nice about Wonder Fest is that it's a more mature crowd than Comiket, according to my friend who went with me. He goes to Comiket twice a year. He said that Wonder Fest is a bit quieter and more mature. Also, there is very few One Piece things to be found there, thank God. I freaking hate One Piece (of shit). I see the character designs for that show and I want to ask the creator, "Is that it? This is the best character designs you can come up with, you lazy, half-assed piece of crap?" I'm used to characters who look like One Piece's main characters being extras in an anime/manga, or maybe the idiot henchmen that the real protagonist beats the crap out of. So yeah, there's not a ton of annoying anime being represented there, to my relief.

Anger!

I think the OP designs are rather original, as is the setting. Can't quite say the same for the plot, but the humour is well executed. Also, it's the most popular show in almost ever. People adore it here, and even McDonald's do OP toy promotions every other month.

Some of those figures are just too cool.

Say Greg,

Did that cool Tron Legacy Light Cycle light up, the one shown at Wonder Fesu '13? I recall the Spin Master produced Tron Legacy Light Cycles sold at retail back in October of 2010 (the white colored Kevin Flynn created light cycle and the black colored Sam Flynn variant light cycle) lit up if a button was pressed (via internal LED lighting scheme).

Any NSFW pics from Wonder Fesu '13 to view as well? There are those garage kits that cater to those with a slightly more risque taste/fetish indeed.

Yeah, sorry guys, I hate One Piece. Lady Gaga sells a godzillion albums, but that doesn't make that silly bint any good. Except for a very few of the main characters, Luffy and the rest literally look retarded. Actually, retarded kids I work with look more attractive and less stupid, so to call those characters "retarded" is disrespectful towards actual retarded people.

PCEFX, unlike Comiket, Wonfes has all the adult-oriented stuff stashed away to one third of one of the three convention halls. I just didn't bother going into there. There is already some figures of girls with grotesquely huge boobs to be found in the regular exhibit halls. I really couldn't care less about hentai stuff.

No, I'm in "I can't stand One Piece" overdrive. My inability fathom why you would like that show has nothing to do with any religious or philosophical stances. Way to go making that connection, bud. I'll try to keep that in mind the next time you rant about George Lucas again. "There goes Skykid, hating on ol' Lucas again. What an atheist."

Anyhow, I'm compiling the video I took of the companies' showroom floor. It's a big one, so it'll take a while. I probably won't be able to upload it to YouTube until sometime this evening after I get home from work. As far as shmups and such go, Tomytec had their Darius Burst and Twinbee toys on display. Plum had their Assault Suits Valken model on display, and was selling it for a nice show-only discount. (Unfortunately, I already bought it a few months back.) Fujimi is coming out with a 1943 plastic model of the P-38 Lightning and one of the bosses from the game.

I'll post an update once it's uploaded. Let's see if MX "I love One Piece so much that I cannot fathom why it makes Greg want to puke" 7 can post more than one word at a time.

Oh yeah, I guess that is Wonder Momo! Her face design is a bit more modern, so it threw me off.

I bought a few things. I got some of those Nagano Prefecture girl mascot goods from Plum, a Zeon flag coffee mug from Gundam, a Disgaea cell phone strap of a character I don't recognize (I only know the first two games), and I ordered a garage kit of the Dirty Pair's Lovely Angel starship. I paid about less than 10,000 yen. Last year, I only bought a few Blade Runner stickers.

I really like how it's more than just anime. Lots of neat stuff there. I may go to the February show, too. Once a year isn't enough! I am also planning on attending the Tokyo Plastic Model Show in October.

Minor derailing question: is there a way to buy complete models via proxy buying services? I would like to buy the Antares ships, I guess.

I don't think so. Unless you find these on YAJ, I don't know how else to buy any. You'd have to attend the show and at least get their contact information.

Thank you. Since you are in Japan, another question: have you ever seen any of these models on sale in e.g. Akihabara, or are they fair-exclusive products? I am asking as a friend should visit Tokyo soon for otaku purposes, and I could send him on a mission, in case.

I just assumed (obviously completely incorrectly, if we observe history) that Christians were moralists and fairly unlikely to debate how stupid or attractive-looking retarded children are versus manga cartoons. ;) I'm not sure why you or BrianC would think I was talking about anything to do with a disliking of One Piece when it was in reply to MX7's quote.

EDIT: I don't remember ragging on George Lucas much tho. American Zoetrope, American Graffiti, THX and Star Wars all win. I just think the no-necked bastard should burn for those abhorrent prequels.

I fail to see how One-piece & Christianity bashing has anything to do with this thread. Can you guys stop, possibly avoiding depressing posts such as "but he started first?".

If you gentlemen hate something, please keep it for yourself, and come here smiling. Else, I'll call N.2, who will send in the rover, and you learn what it means to be unmutual.

I could have just said that One Piece character designs are retarded, but I pointed out that it is unkind to do so, since retarded people are not inherently ugly as the character designs of that dumb show.
Randorama wrote:I fail to see how One-piece & Christianity bashing has anything to do with this thread.
I brought up the absence of One Piece as an example of the maturity of the convention, since One Piece is essentially a kids' show. Sorry I ranted a bit too much about that. As for the second part, bringing up my belief in God was simply a non-sequitir and merely an excuse to jab at me and ridicule me. This is the Shmups forum, but many people on here seem to think that it's the Atheist Shmups forum.

As for what you'd asked about earlier, I think I may be able to help you out. As with Comiket, WonFes has a big book that lists the private exhibitors. Many of them have pictureshomepages displayed in their ads. What are these "Antares ships" you mentioned? What show are they from? Did you see these in the video or in the photo gallery? I may be able to remember where I saw them, and figure out who the vendor was. It's probably a longshot, but I could try. For example, I'm looking at the ad for the vendor who was selling the Border Down and Senkou no Ronde garage kits (www.rc-berg.co.jp).
