Choice of shmup monitor (x360) specs?

Post by bytestorm »

Hi!
For the moment I am using a DELL U2312HM 23'' monitor for my x360 but lately started to look for a new one..
I dont know what specs to check for really.. in case of ms and resolutions :/

Could someone give me some tips?

Maximum ms?
Do i need 120hz monitor?
resolutions?
wich monitor size would best reproduce the experience? (havent seen any 29" lcds.. that would rock :) but 27" might be good?..
I have a IPS panel in my screen now, and from what I understand, IPS are to prefer, but slower than TN/VA?

I just want my shmup experience to be as good as it gets on my 360 :)

UPDATE: I should mention that I use it in TATE mode :) Hence TN aint viable

Thanks all!

This might be the case for some units, but there appear to be many IPS-type panels that are just as fast as TN panels. I'm not really familiar with VA but apparently Sony and Samsung use it to get viewing angles almost in line with IPS. The conclusion of this recent BenQ monitor review offers some general thoughts about VA type monitors worth reading over. IPS gives good viewing angles, and I wouldn't consider TN anymore (especially if there's any possibility rotating the screen will be wanted and the extra viewing angles will be nice for other people watching, too).

Again, http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ offers some good resources on learning about monitors in general.

Hmm I realize that I could probably learn abit about optimizing my monitor in that post.. It actually got quite good grades in that page too!

I wouldn't know any "affordable" monitor that would be a worthwhile upgrade from your Dell 2312. Your monitor is fast and excellent looking. There's no way in hell you would downgrade to a TN display with shitty colors and viewing angles.

The new 29" displays have a 21:9 ratio and about the same 4:3 viewing are than your 2312 (and the same line resolution), so that's no improvement.

The only real upgrade would be a Dell 3014, but that's expensive.

^ Agreed with this, I didn't check the monitors listed. Still worth looking over some reviews to see where the tech is.

I only got my monitor fairly recently (last few years) but I've already started looking towards the future - more resolution, LED backlighting, a more future-proof connector, maybe a wider gamut but mainly improving on lag time just a bit more (already excellent at 8ms) - that'd be lovely. Of course my monitor won't work for the Xbox due to being 1200 lines instead of 1080, and not handling the conversion well (reportedly, anyway).

I've got the same monitor which I use for shmups. Did you ever manage to successfully tate it in the other direction by removing and re-fixing the rotate mechanism? I've spoken to people that tell me it's possible with this monitor but I can't manage it for some reason.

Hi!
Do you mean same monitor as me, or the suggested ones?
I have only rotated in one direction since x360 and pc picture can be rotated both ways.. are you using some console or why do you need to rotate in the other direction?

I have the DELL U2312HM 23' and I need to rotate it the other way for loads of Dreamcast games that only rotate in one direction.

There may well be different designs of the rotatable hub for the U2312HM. The unit that I picked up Cyber-Monday 2012 incorporates some features to prevent "incorrect attachment" of the screen-side hub plate to the rotatable hub - which can be circumvented with a drill of the correct size.
  1. Rotate the screen from the horizontal to the vertical position. Carefully detach the screen from the stand.
  2. When you look at the screen-side hub plate you should see four phillips (cruciform slot) screws which attach the plate to the hub. More importantly take a note of the two pin holes (on the diagonal) on the plate. Mark one of them which a permanent marker - both the general surroundings of the pin hole, as well the pin itself. This will just make it easier to re-attach the plate "correctly" later.
  3. Detach the plate by removing the four screws. When you inspect the pin holes you should find that they have different diameters. So you are going to have to drill out the smaller one to match the diameter of the larger one.
  4. After that modification install the plate turned 180° to the hub with the four screws - your marked pin should be in the unmarked hole while the unmarked pin should be in the marked hole.
  5. Now carefully re-attach the screen to the stand (from the other direction). Now the screen is rotated "the other way" - as it would be needed for example for Batsugun (Saturn).
As always - attempt this at your own risk.

Ah, so it will always involve drill work? That's a pain because I don't own one. As far as I recall the issue with my plate wasn't that the screw holes were too small, but that the plate had small ridges that prevented it from sitting evenly onto the monitor when I tried to put it back on the "wrong" way. I guess that would require drill work too.

Thanks for the reply.
